Be .it known that I, JOSEPH T. BOND, a
citizen of the United States, residing at tacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates primarily to paper or similar receptacles, has especial referenceto means for'formlng closures or caps forv receptacles, has for its object economy in manufacture, and consists in certain 1mprovements, which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification :-F1gure '1 represents a vertical transverse section, partly in elevation showing the parts of the machine in position after the blank has beencut from the stock. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the parts in position at the end of the closure forming stroke. Fig. 3 is a like view showing the parts separated at the end of the up or return stroke, with a closure blank formed and displaced from the face of the forming-die, and Fig. 4 is a like View,
showing the closure blank displaced from the posit-ion'shown in Fig. 3.
- Reference being had to the drawings and the designating characters thereon, the numeral 1 indicates the bolster-plate. 2 the bolster provided with a heating chamber 3,
and is properly secured to the bolster-plate. 4 the detachable and renewable formingring supported onthe bolster and secured thereto by an annular clamping-member 5 and screw bolts 6. The forming-ring is provided with a concentric projection 7, which engages a like seat 8 in the bolster.
On the upper face of the member 5 is an annular cutting member 9, which assists in cutting the stock, and the inner upper edge of the forming-ring 4, is slightly rounded to facilitate the entry of the blank to the interior of the forming ring and prevent tearing or breaking;-and within the forming-ring is a vertically movable follower-die 1O resting on a support 11, which is spring actuated to raise the follower-die after each down stroke of the forming-die, and to susdrawings, as it'is well known in this class of} machines and forms no part of my inventiom In the upper end of the follower-die is an annular rabbet 10, and a'passage 14, which passage is continued down into the support.

20 indicates the forming-die supported in the'die-head 1'6, and is attached to a vertically movable member 21, extending from the plunger 22, and is provided at its 'lower end with an annular projection 23, which with the rabbet 10' forms the annular groove 12 in the closure 13., The forming; die is provided with-'a passage 24,- which performs a two fo'ld function, first, in the down stroke of said die, it allows the es cape of entrapped air between the face of the die and the blank 15, and also provides for displacing the completed closure 13 from the face of the die, by an air blast',.as will vhereinafter be further described.
25 indicates an annular stripper surrounding and engaging the cutting-die 19, whose function is to strip the stock from the blank cutting-die 19 after each down stroke of the machine, and is resiliently supported on bolts 26, and actuated by springs 27, secured to the die-plate 17. The stripper is brought into'use with each up stroke of the die-head and the cutting-die 19. y
' 28 indicates an air supply pipe, provided with lateral extensions 29 and 30, the former being supported on the head 16 and is'pro vided with-a sleeve 31, preferably 'held to its seat or in engagement with the; pipe,'28, by a coiled spring,not' shown,- to effect a tight joint between the end of the sleeve and said pipe, and supplies a blast of air to disengage the closure from the forming-die 20, as shown in Fig. 3, and the latter ex'- tension supplies a blast of air for removing the closure or cap 13 laterally from the machine, as shown in F 4. The supply of air is intermittent and is controlled autofrom moving parts of the machine.

It isobvious that the device may be used for cutting blanks and forming closures or caps from other material than paper, and is therefore not limited thereto in its use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a machine of the class described, means for cutting blanks and forming closures or caps, comprising a cutting die, a resilient annular stripper surrounding and engaging the cutting-die for removing stock therefrom, a fixed bolster, a'removable forming ring,a movable forming die, and a follower-die movable in said forming ring.
2. In a machine of the class described,
means for cutting blanks and forming cloforces the blank into the formingsures or caps, comprising a cutting die, a
resilient annular stripper surrounding and engaging the cutting die for removing stock therefrom, a fixed bolster, a removable forming ring, a movable forming die, and a follower die movable in said ring, means for conducting a blast of air for releasing the closure from the forming-die, and a separate air blas't' for discharging said closure from the machine.
3. In a machine of the class described, a fixed support, a bolster on said support, a die vertically movable in said bolster, provided with means for allowing escape of trapped air, a vertically movable head, a cutting-die secured thereto,a vertically movable forming-die concentrically arranged in said cutting-die, adapted to enter said bolster and provided with a passage "for air, and a vertically movable annular stripper concentrically arranged on said cutting-die.
4:. A machine of the class described, comprising a die-head, a cutting-die secured to the head, a vertically movable forming-die, a forming-ring, a follower-die, said forming-die and follower-die 7 being vertically movable in said forming-ring, an stripper surrounding and engaging the cutting-die, means for releasing trapped air in the forming-die, and means for supplying a blast of air through the forming-die, means for releasing trapped air in the follower-die, ahd means for supplying a blast of air between the cutting-die and-the upperface of the bolster for discharging closures laterally from ihe machine.

blast of air for removing a cap therefrom, an air supply pipe having a branch slidably mounted thereon for supplying air to said forming-die, a bolster, a forming-ring, a movable follower-die provided with means for releasing trapped air, and means for supplying a blast of air between the cuttingdie and the upper face of the bolster for discharging caps laterally from the machine.
