Description

M MOMARTIN. METAL BUILDING GONSTRUOTIONJ APPLICATION FILED JAN. 30, 1911.
Patented Dec. 17, 1912.
untrue r ran MALCOLM J. MOMABTIN, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO DULUTH CORRU- I GATING '85 ROOFING. COMPANY, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA, A CORPORATION OF MINNESOTA.
METAL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
memes.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1912.
Application filed January 30, 1911. Serial No 605,533.
It is one of the objects of my invent-ion to provide means whereby it is possible to first construct a building having-only an outer shell of sheet metal preferably Cori-ugated and later to add supporting means for the laths to which the interior finish 1s supplied. This result is attained by providing adjacent sheets with flanges on their edges, these sheets being held together by passing bolts .or the like through suitable openings in the flanges. lVhen it is desired to add'an interior finish to the building the bolts engaging the flanges may be loosened and a bracket, preferably in the form of an angle iron, may be slipped in between the flanges. This bracket is provided with slots which engage the fastening bolts. ()n the portions of the brackets, which are parallel to the main surface of the outer sheathing,
are provided outwardly projecting hook-like members which are adapted to support laths or the like used in connection with the in- I terior finish. It will thus be apparent that although the outer sheathing of the building consists of sheet metal, it is a very simple matter to add means to which. the inner finish may be attached. I also referably cover the outwardly projecting anges between adjacent sheets with cap, members through which the bolts, or other fastening means, 1) ass.
' in the surface of the roof sheathing. This It is a further object of my invention to construct a ridge-pole of such nature that it will act as a firm support for the roof rafters and at the same time will be of such nature that no bolt or rivet holes are formed result is accomplished by providing a central connecting member extending from flanges of the cap members of the roof sheets to a cap member on the inside of the roof, which cap member is itself provided with outwardly extending supporting flanges. This inner cap member and the cap members of the roof sheeting are fastened to the connecting member bymeans of horizontal bolts, thus avoiding the formation of holes passing downwardly from the roof in a vertical plane.
These and other advantages of-my inven-- is a fragmentary horizontal section through adjacent portions of the side sheathing showing the removable bracket in position. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section through one of the brackets shown in Fig. 1.
The building made according to my invention, such as a. garage, may have the outer side sheathing 10 and the roof sheathing 11. The side sheathing 10 is preferably provided With horizontal corrugations 12 as shown in Fig. 4:. The. edges of the adjacent sheets are provided with outwardly extending flanges 13. which are inclosed by. means of a cap member 14. Bolts 15, having nuts 16, pass through the two sides of the U- shaped cap member 14 and the flanges 13. It will be clear that the cap members 1 1 form efiicient means for preventing the ingress of wind, rain and the like between adjacent sheet If it is desired to add an interior finish to the building, the nuts 16 inay be loosened and the flanges 13, 13 slightly separated from each other. The bracket 17, prefer ably in the shape of an angle iron,
then be inserted between the flanges 13, 13,-
the downwardly inclined grooves 18 in the edges of the portion 19 of the bracket engaging the bolts 15. The nuts 16 are then tightened, thus securely fastening all of the parts together. The portion 20 of the bracket 17 is provided with a plurality of hook-like members 21 punched from the 1 body of the metal. In these hooks may be placed laths or other means to which the interior finish such as plied.
by cap member 23.,
22 which are inclosed As clearly shown in Fig. 3, adjacent roof:- sheets '11 are similarly provided with flanges I plaster may be supflanges bolts 24 having nuts 25 passing through the flanges E22 and the sides of cap 23. A connecting member 26 is placed between the 22, 22, and has suit-ableapertures through which. bolts 2i pass. This connecting member extends downwardly and is itself inclosed by an inner cap member 27, which has the supporting flanges 28, 28, the bolts 29 serving to securely attach the cap member 27 to the connecting member 26. It will be clear that the connecting members 26 and the inner caps 27 together form the roof rafters.
The construction of the ridge-pole is best shown in Fig. 2. The cap members 23 are bent to form the flanges 00 between which the connecting member 31. is placed, the flanges 30 and the connecting member 31 being fastened together by bolts An inner cap member 33, having flanges 34, is fastened to the connecting member 31 means of'bolts 35. It will be evident that the connecting member 31 and the inner cap member form a ridgc-pole which gives firm support to the cap members 23 of the roof. If desired, to givegreater strength, the roof sheets 11 and the flanges 28, 28 of the inner cap members 27 of the rafters may extend to the connecting member 31 and the flanges 34. may be placed just below the ends of flanges 28, 28. In order to prevent penetration of rain, and wind, the covering member 36 may be placed above the ridge pole.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many changes could be made in the detailed construction of the parts which I have described without departing from the. spirit and scope of my invention.
Whatclaim is 1. In a building construction, the combination of a pair of metal sheets having flanges on their adjacent edges, means for fastening together said flanges, and a bracket between said flanges, said bracket being adapted for insertion between or removal from said flanges without removal of said fastening means, substantially as described.
2. In a building construction, the combination of a pair of sheets having flanges on their adjacent edges, a cap member inclosing the edges of said flanges, means for fastening together said flanges and said cap member, and a bracket between said flanges, said bracket hating engagement with said fastening means and adapted for removal from between said flanges without removal of said fastening means, substantially as described.
3. In a building construction, the combination of metallic sheets having flanges on their adjacent edges, means for fastening said flanges together, and a bracket inserted between said flanges, said bracket. having a slot in its edge for engagement with said fastenin means. substantiall as described.-
to a member for supporting finishing means,
substantially as described.
In a building construction, the combination of a pair of sheets having flanges on their adjacent edges, adjustable means for fastening said flanges together, and a bracket inserted between said flanges, said bracket having a downwardly sloping slot in its edge for engagement with said fastening means, substantially as described.
6. In a building construction, the combination of a pair of sheets having flanges on their adjacent edges, a cap member inclosing said flanges, adjustable means for fastening said flanges and said cap member together, av bracket adapted for insertion between said flanges, said bracket having slots on its edge for engagement with said fastening means and having integral therewith supporting means for an interior finish, substantially as described.
