DOOR-CURTAIN FOR VEHICLES.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, Homer EIWIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ogontz, county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain lmprovements in Door-Curtains for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
One object of, my invention is to provide means whereby the curtain of an automobile or other vehicle will move with the door when the'said door is opened or closed.
A further object of the invention is to make the curtain readily detachable, so that it can be rolled into a small compass.

A is the body of the vehicle, an automobile in the present instance.
B is the door mounted on hinges 7), 6; these hinges may be atthe rear end, as in- 40 dicated in Fig. 1, or may be mounted at the forward end of the door, depending upon the type of the vehicle.
c is a socket tapered as shown and secured, in the present instance, to the inner side of the door at the forward end, Fig. 6, and D is an upright hazing a tapered end 03 adapted to the socket. This upright is shaped as clearly shown in Fig. 4, to conform to the shape of the bows of the top.
E is a curtain, and permanently secured to the upper edge of the curtain is a metallic strip- F. This strip is made flexible at the inner end and is preferably made from a piece of thin metal bent to form a loop f,

.This last mentioned pocket is for the reception of .the upright D. The flexible section f of the strip F forms what I term a flexible hinge, and this hinge is located preferably in line with thepivot hinges or" the door so that it will yield-when the door turns on its hinges, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
In the lower edge of the curtain are eyes g, 57 adapted to'buttons h on the door, and the inner-upper corner of the curtain is pro.- vided with a button or eye 6 adapted to an eye or button a" on the top A, and, insome instances, one or more buttons may be.pro-. vided along the inner edge of the curtain E by which it. is attached tothe back curtain N, if found desirable At thefront edge of the door opening is I a detachable bar M having a socket m onthe frame A, and this upright supports the rear edge of the forward curtain P.
The rear end of the curtain extends only to the rear end of the door, and the r'ear curtain N under-laps the curtain E, as shown at a. The rear end of the forward curtain P has a narrow flap 0 which extends over 8&3 the front edge of the curtain E, and I preferably extend the lower edge a of the top; over the --upper edge of the curtain so as to prevent rain gaining access through the space between the curtain and the top.'
By makingthe detachable door curtainin themanner described, the curtain opens tvith the door so that a person can enter or leave the vehicle without detaching the curtain or a portion of it as is now customary. The curtain, owing to the flexible. upper strip, yields at theinncr'edge when the door is opened, as shown in Fig. 3, thus keeping the inner joint tight. The rigid portion of the upper strip Fwill. hold the curtain in proper position.
In a door of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which the root or top covering A. projects beyond the plane of the door at its hinges, the line of bond of the door curtain will, of course, not be on a straight line but will follow the general contour of the curtain at this point; however, in. many vehicles, the hinges and the door are substantially in. the same plane, and,in this instance, the line of bend of the door curtainwill be substahtially straight It will thus be understood that my inven tion may be used on vehicles of any known shape.
When it is not necessary to use the curtain it can be quickly removed and rolled upon the upper strip F and the upright- D may be rolled with it if desired.
I claim 1. The combination in a vehicle, of a top; a body portion; a doorway; a door pivoted to the body portion and closing the lower portion of the doorway; an upright secured to the door; a flexible. horizontal hinge strip connected at one end to the upright; said hinge strip being in line with the pivot of the door; with a curtain extension secured to the flexible hinge strip at its upper edge and to the door atits lower edgeso that .When the dooris open the flexible hinge strip will accommodate itself to the movement of the door on the pivoted hinge.
2. The combination in a vehicle in which the top is wider than the body, of a door hinged to the body by pivot hinges and closing part of the doorway; an upright detachably secured to the outer end of the door; a flexible hinge strip attached at one end to the upright and at the other end to the top of the body port-ion of the vehicle; with a curtain secured to the iiexible hinge strip at its upper end and to the door at its lower edge; the upper edge of the curtain projecting beyond the door; the parts being so arranged that when the door is turned on its pivot, the flexible hinge strip will yield and will. accommodate itself to the movement of the door so that the curtain will be carried, with the door, to permit of ingress and egress through the doorwa 3. receive the end of the upright and to extend back to a pointnear the vertical line of the hinge of the door; means for attaching said strip to the top; a curtain having a horizontal socket adapted to receive the flexible strip and a vertical socket adapted to receive the upright; with means for attaching the curtain to the door; the parts being so arranged that, upon the opening of the door, the flexible portion of the metallic strip and the curtain will be flexed.
