Specification of Letters Patent.

. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER F. CRooKnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in N ut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices whereby a nut may be sustained upon a bolt or a bolt sustained upon a nut, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is of an extremely simple construction, which is cheaply manufactured, and which will perform the function for which it is devised with ease and with accuracy.
With the above objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings accompanying this specification,Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, and showing a nut pro vided with means for locking the bolt thereon. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a bolt. This bolt is of the ordinary construction excepting that it has its outer end or face provided with a depression or pocket 2.
The numeral 3 designates the nut for the bolt. This nut is of that class commonly known as carriage nuts, the same having a threaded bore which does not extend entirely through the nut. The closed end or face of the nut is provided with an opening 4, the said opening being adapted to receive the inwardly projecting sustaining finger 5 provided upon the locking element 6. This locking element is constructed of a single flattened strip of resilient material, the finger of the same being formed by bending the said strip downwardly at the central portion of the strip. The finger thus provides a pair of oppositely arranged integrally formed arms, and these arms are bent in opposite directions in a plane parallel with the outer face of the nut. These extending portions are further bent and continued along the opposite sides of the nut and the extremities of the said extensions are bent inwardly and adapted to be received in rectangular slots 7 formed in the opposite face of the nut.
It is, of course, obvious that the device can be applied to nuts provided with more or less than four faces if desired.
Having thus fully described the said invention, What I claim is In combination with a bolt having a longitudinal angular opening, of a'nut for the bolt having a closed face formed with a substantially rectangular slot in the center thereof, said nut having a threaded bore adapted to receive an exteriorly threaded portion of the bolt, a locking element for the bolt and the nut, said locking element comprising a member constructed of a single piece of resilient material, said locking member being centrally formed with a finger, the said finger being formed by bending the strip downwardly and upon itself from its central point and comprising a pair of 0p positely arranged, integrally formed resilient arms adapted to enter the rectangular slot in the closed face of the nut and the opening of the bolt and to be yieldingly retained therein, the said member being continued in opposite directions over the face of the nut and having its sides bent downwardly and in parallel relation with the said finger to contact with the opposite sides of the nut, and the extremities of the downwardly extending portions of the locking element being inturned to provide angular fingers for interlocking engagement with the nut.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
