DEVICE FOR PROTECTING THE ENDS AND NUTS OF BOILER-STAYS FROM THE EFFECTS OF HEAT.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Dec.10,1 912.
Application filed April 20, 1912. Serial No. 692,037.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REGINALD CHRIS IE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented new and useful Devices for Protecting the Stay Ends and Nuts'of Boilers and Similar Projections from the Effects of Heat, of which the following is a specification. v
The present invention relates to improved devices for protecting the stay ends and nuts of boilers, and similar projections, from the prejudicial effects of heat; and it has reference to that class of protective device wherein caps of fireproof or refractory material, or of metal, are employed to protect such stay ends and nuts; the improved devices are, furthermore, applicable to existing nuts in situ.
According to this invention there is disposed around the nut a removable helical, spiral, or other suitably formed coil, (or its equivalent), of metal, or other appropriate material, of convenient section and of any desired number of convolutions, or twists, constituting, as it were, a screw-thread; and said coil is held in place on the nut, in any desired manner, and is adapted to engage a cap, or cover, of fire-resisting material, formed, for the purpose in view, with an internal spiral path, corresponding in diameter and pitch with those of the coil, so that when the cap or cover is screwed down over the nut, both the latter and the coil, together with the stay end, or the like, will be protected from the injurious effects of heat.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which show a convenient embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a part sectional elevation of the improved means; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the helical coil detached from the nut; Fig. 3 is a plan showing the coil applied to the nut; Fig. 4 is a side view of the nut showing the recesses therein. adapted to receive the said coil.
In said drawings, a is the nut; 6 the removable helical coil of metal; 0 the internally grooved protective cap of fire-resisting material; (2 the boiler plate; and e the boiler stay end, or similar projection, to be protected from the injurious eflects of heat.
The removable helical coil 79 is formed as an annulus or loop consisting of one turn or spire, one end of which is rigidly connected to the other end by means of a strut or tie 6 formed integrally therewith. This strut is set at a suitable pitch, or angle, and constitutes a rigid connection between the ends of the spire; it is of importance as it also acts to retain the coil in situ, and prevents movement of the one half thereof relatively to the other half. The coil 7) is advantageously rounded on its periphery, (as shown), in order to readily engage the spiral groove 9 in the cap or cover 0, while its inner circumference is hexagonal, (although other polygonal forms may be employed to suit other sided nuts), so as easily and quickly to pass over and lit the flats on the nut a. Extending between two of the adjacent hexagonal inner faces of the coil 1) is a web or straight portion a which, when the coil is slipped over the nut, rests loosely, but securely, in a recess of, provided, for its reception, between two of the adjoining flats of the nut, as shown in Fig. 4.
When the improved device hereinbefore described is to be applied to existing nuts in situ, it is merely necessary to form a recess in the nut and then to apply the helical coil. It is advisable to fill the cap or cover 0, with fire clay before screwing it over the nut and coil.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
1. A device for protecting boiler stay ends and nuts, and similar projections, from the effects of heat, comprising a coil disposed around the nut, said nut and coil having co-acting means for preventing shifting of the latter, and a fire-resisting cap fitted over said coil and nut and provided with an internal spiral groove adapted to receive the coil, said groove having a diameter and pitch corresponding with those of said coil.
2. A device for protecting boiler stay ends and nuts, and similar projections, from the effects of heat, comprising a removable annulus disposed around the nut and forming a helical coil having its periphery rounded and its inner circumference polygonal, a strut connecting one end of the spire of such coil with the other end thereof, and a cap of fire-resisting material fitting over said coil and nut and provided with a spiral groove adapted to receive the coil, said groove having a diameter and pitch corresponding with those of said coil.
3. A device for protecting boiler stay ends and nuts, and similar projections, from the effects of heat, comprising a removable annulus disposed around the nut and forming a helical coil whose inner circumference is polygonal and has a straight supporting web extending between two of its adjacent faces, said nut being formed between two of its.adjacent flats with a recess adapted to receive said Web, and a cap of fire-resisting material fitted over said coil and nut and provided with an internal spiral groove adapted to receive said coil, said groove having a diameter and pitch corresponding with those of the said coil.
4. A device for protecting boiler stay ends and nuts, and similar projections, from the effects of heat, comprising a nut having a recess formed between two of its adjacent flats, a helical coil disposed around said nut and having a portion engaged in said recess, and a cap of fire-resisting material provided with an internal spiral groove adapted to receive said coil and having a diameter and pitch corresponding with those of the said coil.
5,. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a nut provided with a circumferential projection inclined to the axis thereof, and a cap fitted over said nut and formed with an internal groove corresponding in pitch and diameter to said projection and adapted to receive the same.
6. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a nut provided with a circumferential thread, and a cap fitted over said nut and formed with an internal spiral groove conforming in pitch and diameter to said thread and adapted to receive the same.
7. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a nut, a coil encircling the nut and positively engaged with the same, and a cap fitted over said nut and coil and formed with an internal spiral groove adapted to receive the latter.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
REGINALD CHRISTIE.
