v Specification of Letters Patent.
Application Afiled October 10, 1911.
Patented Dec. 10, 1912.
Serial No. 653,885.
county of Oklahoma, State of Oklahoma,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; 'and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in boxes and more particularly to a novel fastening means for retaining glass panels therein and preventing the edges of the openings from splitting or tearing. We are aware that numerous improvements have been invented along theselines and especially of the Patent #183,17 5, but in all of the several improvements there has been nothing made which when applied to an opening formed in a box will prevent the edges thereof from splitting when the said openings terminate at a distance from the bottom. In order to overcome this objectionable feature the following construction was devised.
' Our invention resides in a plurality of clamping plates adapted to engage the edges of the open side of a box-and support a transparent closing panel, the said clamping plates extending beyond the edges of the, opening at the opposite sides thereof and reinforcing the same. Y
The object of this invention is the provision of a device of the character described which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and elhcient in use and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which f Figure 1 is a perspective view of apbox with our invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig.l 8 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 8-3 of Fig. 1, `and Fig. 4 is a plan view'of the blank from which the panel clamping member is constructed.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 11 designates generally a box preferably of circular formation and comprising .a continuous wall 12 closed at its lower end by a bottom 13. The wall 12 of the box is provided with jan open- 60 ing 14 which extends from theupper edge thereof to a pointrelatively near its bottom edge, said opening having vertical side edges 15 and a horizontal edge 16.
4A pair of clamping plates 17 are bent 65 upon themselves to form inner and outer strips 18-19 connected at their inner edges as indicated by the numeral 20. The lower extremities of thestrips 18 and 19 are severed as indicated by the numeral 21 to pro- 70 vide a means whereby when the said strips are secured to the inner and outer sides of the edges 15, respectively, their lower ends will project below the edge 16 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The 75 outer strip 19 is preferably bent upon itself as indicated by the numeral 22 to produce with the said outer strip 19 aclamping means for engagement with a suitable transparent panel 23. The outer edges of the inner of the strips 18 are extended beyond the outer edges of the outer strips 19 and apertured \as indicated by the numeral 24 for the reception of fastening devices 25, whereby the said plates are securely held upon the edgesl against displacement.
From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that the inner and outer strips 18 and 19 securely clamp the plates 90' upon the box against displacement with the assistance of the fastening devices 25, while the outer of the strips which is bent upon itself securely retains the glass panel in front of the opening 14. It should also be observed that-the lower ends of the strips 18 and 19 extend below the lower edge 16 of the opening and preventsaid edge from splitting or becoming severed from the edges 15.
Having thus fully described this invention what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is i* l The combination with a box having an opening in its side wall extending from the upper edge of said wall to a point relatively 105 near its bottom edge, a holding member at each side of the opening, each of said holding members comprisin a metallic strip having a cross section ormed ofopposed U-shaped portions one of which receives a v respective side edge of the opening and the other of which is disposed outwardly of the boX with its' mouth directed toward the members againstl disengagement from opening, the bight of the innermost U-v the side of the box.
