CHARLES vAnNnY, or vnAS'r BRoMrrnLn, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 104,668, dated .Time 21,1870; r
1 IMPROVEMENT 1N mesme-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred these Letters Patent and making part ot, the same.
Totallprsoas towh-om these presents may come:
Beit known that 1,'QH'A1iLns VARNEY, of East y Bromeld, of the county of Hampden', of the State'of Massachusetts, have ,made a new anduseful invention, l 1 aving reference to the Processes -of -Peg`ging Mach1nes;and do hereby declare the saineto be fully described in the' following specit`1cation,fand repre! s entedin the accompanying drawing, of which- '-flEi'gurel is a side elevation;
Figure 2, an undersideview; l4liguref3,a longitudinal section 5i and Figure 4, a transverse seetionof apegging-lnachine presser-foot, provided' with my invention. My invention consists as follows; First, jin the combination of a, movable` edge-rest audrnechanism, as hereinafterA described, for moving it intoether of two positions ywith the presser-foot.
g Seconchin the combinatonoi an adjustable bearer 'Iwith'the said. movable rest, or so as to make part thereof.
The purposeof the 'saidmovable` rest and its oper- ',ative mechanism istobxing a shoe into either of 'the properpositions forhavingeither ofv two concentric or parallel rowsof pcgsinserted in it by the pegging- ,inachine, of which thc presser lnay be a part.A
1".l he purpose of the adjustable bearer is to' regulate thedistance'of 4the outerrow of pegsfrom the edge as occasion may require.
` In the drawing- A( denotes a` pegging-machine 'presser-foon made vin! thezusual manner. y Y
j B is the sole-edge-supporter, -w-hioh, in this case, is in a 'piece vof met-al, separate from the slider' fO, and is 'slotted as shown at a a, andconnected with the slider bymeans of two"screws,"b b, which lgo Vthrough the Vslots and 4screw into the slider, so that 4their heads may-be forced up to the part B, in order to conn'e it firmly to the part C. l f i `From the above itfwill 4be seen-that the'said part B isa'dj ustable Ywith referencev `tothe aperture c of the presserffoot, orgwith reference t-o the awl and pegt driver, when extended downthrough such'aperture The slider C is a'block'of metal, separate from the `presser-foot,1and,arranged against its lower face, so
as ,tobecapable of being slid lengthwise thereon.
The slideris held" to the presser-foot by aheaded screw,` D, which passes through a spring-plate or washer, E, arranged against `thc slider in manner. as represented.' Y
The saids'r'ew also passes. through a slot, c, made 4longitudinally in the: slider. It also goes through a 'eammedisloth formed through a transverse slider, lib-and serewsinto the presser-foot.
,Thetransvers'e' slider F, shownin bottom view in ig..5, and in longitudinal section in fig. 4,' is lplaced wi-thin anotch, g, madefacross the slider G, and having a tl-aaisverse section corresponding to that of-the einer n.
through one o f jsnch ears, the whole being as represented iu the drawing.
By this screw, the extent of rearward movement of the slider Cv may be'regulated. v
By moving the slider F lengthwise in one direction vuntil its perforated ear may bring up against ythe slider C, the latter will be advanced toits extreme `forward position. v
So, by moving the slider F in the opposite'way, lengthwise of it7 until the inner end of the screw t may bring up against the slider-G, thc lat-ter will beinoved to its other position.
The slider Cv andthe sole-edge` supporter B may-be in one piece of met-al, in which case theywould constitute, as they do when separate and made and held together by screws, in manner as described, a mov: ble
edge1'est.1 Y
.That part of the presser-foot which rests-on thesole isshown at l?. ItA is-a piece lor plate of metal, separate from the rest-.of the `presser-foot, and is fixed to it by screws, which go through the foot land screw into,
the .piece l?, they being shown at x a in g. 2.
'lheouter curvedsurface of the bearing-plate I is formed with channels or. grooves, one seriesof which crosses theother, so as to cause the bearing-surface .to take a firm hold of theV sole when the presser-foot is' in use.l
It is an important improi-'ement to have the bear ingplate P separate from the rest of the presser-foot,
and connected with it as described, for the par-tI is liable 'soon to wear, and, when worn too much, it m'a'y beeasily removed from the rest of the presser-foot and a fresh plate substituted, thus saving the' necessity of throwingv away' the whole 'pressen foot.-
I claini- -The Aedge-rest, as inadeor composed of the two parts B and O,. app lied so; as to enable the part B to be adjustable and fixed to the part C, substantially in manner and for the purpose as set forth. Also, the combination and arrangement -of the slider -ll and Astop-screw@ with the presser-foot and the adjustable-edge-rest, substantially as specified.
Also, the presseihfoot, asprovided with the reinerable bearing-plate P, connected with the rest of the foot, substantially in manner as described. Also, the slotted sliderF and its supporting-groove g,
arranged and combincchas explained, with the presser-A foot A, the screw or pin D, and the edge-rest, composed of the parts-B and G', the whole being applied together, so as to operate as set forth.
CHARLES. VARNEY.
