MORRIS C. CLARK, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
DOOR CLOSER AND CHECK.-
Application filed August 29, 1911.l Serial No. 646,693.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MORRIS C. CLARK, citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Closers and Checks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in doo-r closers and checks, and has for its main object to provide a simple door closer easily adjustable to the weight of the door.
Another object is to provide a door closer and check which can be attached to doors of varying weights from a so-lid door to a light screen door.
A further object is to provide a door closer of this kind so constructed that it can be manufactured at minimum cost and its simplicity will insure its continual operation wit-hout attention.
lith these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which: f
Figure 1, Sheet 1, is an elevation of the device operatively connected to a door casing and a closed door, the oscillating buffer being in its normal position; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the device operatively attached to a door casing and a partly closed doo-r, the actuating arm of t-he device bein shown only in part, and the oscillating buer being in a raised position; Fig. 4, Sheet 2, is a vertical section on the line A--B of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the trip arm or oscillating buffer; Fig. 6 is a similar view of the trip arm actuating spur; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the device with the operating mechanism removed.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a casing provided with an atl taching plate 2 for securing the device to a door casing M. A vertically disposed shaft Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nee. 1o, i912.
3 passes through the casing land is journaled therein, being encircled by a coiled spring 4 which is attached at itsk opposite ends to the inclosing casing and saidshaft. An angular actuating member 5 embodying Va forked end 5EL and avshank 6 is mounted on the upper and lower ends of the shaft 3 through the `forked end 5a. rThe upper forked member 5a has its bearing on a Xed inclosing plate 7 of the casing 1, and above this member on the shaft 3 a notched wheel 8 is rigidly mounted and is engageable by a pawl 9 of the upper fork member 5a, whereby the tension of the spring 4 may be easily adjusted according to the weight of the door to which the device is attached.
Connection is established between the ac,- tuating arm 5 and the door N through a clip l0 formed with looped ends slidably mounted on the shank 6, said clip being further provided with a lug 11 by which it is pivotally attached to an angular plate 12 secured to the door.
In order to check the closing movement of the door a horizontally disposed ledge 13 is formed between the casing 1 and the atn taching plate 2 and is provided with a lug 13ZL on which an oscillating, preferably resilient, arm 14 is pivoted intermediate its ends, the: longer end of said arm being formed with a return bend 14a which encircles a buffer 15, and the shorter end 14b being engageable with a spur 16 secured to the actuating arm 5 and projecting laterally therefrom. A Xed buffer 17 is securely fastened to a boss 18 which is provided on the attaching plate 2, Said buffer 17 being in the present instance disposed just above and at the inner side of the oscillating arm 14, asclearly illustrated inthe drawing.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my device will be apparent. The tension on the spring 4 is adjusted thro-ugh the notched wheel 8 to suit the weight of the door and is maintained in this adjustment by engaging the pawl 9 with said wheel. Upon the door N being opened the clip 10 slidesupon the shank 6 and the actuating arm 5 rotates with the shaft 3 against the tension of the spring 4. As soon as the door is released the tension of the spring 4 operates upon the actuating arm through the shaft 3, the wheel S and the` pawl 9, thus forcing the door to close. Just before the door N completely closes the brought into the path of movement of the intermediate portion of the member 1 When the door N closes the member strikes the buffer 15 and the force of impact from the door is broken. In the meantime the end portion of the spur 16 passes beyond the inner edge ofthe arm 14 so that the shorter end 143 is above the intermediate portion of -the 'spur 16. When the door N rebounds the buffer 15 is released so that it falls by gravity, carrying down with it the longer end of the arm 14 so that the shorter end 149 is above or at the same level as the upturned end of the spur 16. When the door N again moves slowly to its closed position the member 5 comes in contact with the buffer 17 and thus in the nal closing of the door its movement is resiliently checked.
Having thus described theinvention what is claimed as new is: Y
1. A door closer and stop comprising an actuating arm, means for operatively connecting said arm to a door, an arm pivoted adjacent the door, a buer carried by said arm, a spur carried by the actuating arm and adapted to tilt'said pivoted arm and thereby move the buffer into the path of movement of the actuatingV arm, and a second buffer arranged at one side of the said pivoted arm to receive the impact from the door after its rebound from the buifer on the pivoted arm.
2. A door closer and stop comprising an actuating arm, means for operatively connecting the same to a door, an arm pivoted adjacent the door and provided with a buffer, and a rigid spur carried by the actuating arm and adapted to tilt the pivoted arm to move the buffer into the path of movement of the actuating arm, said actuating arm being shaped to clear said pivoted arm in the nal closing movement of the door.
3. A door closer and stop comprising a spring-controlled actuating arm, means for connecting said arm to a door, a spur rigid with and depending from the actuating arm, and an oscillating buffer adjacent the door and arranged to be engaged by said spur whereby it will be swung into the path of movement of the actuating arm.
Ll. A door stop comprising an oscillating arm mounted on the door casing, a buiier carried by said arm, a spur connected to the door and arranged to engage the oscillating arm and move the buffer to a position to initially interrupt the closing of the door, and a stationary buffer arranged on the door casing adjacent the first-mentioned buer to receive the impact of the door after the rebound and on its nal closing movement. j n
5. A door stop. and closer comprising a casing having an extended attaching plate adapted to be secured to a door casing, a
the door, an oscillating buffer mounted on Y said attaching plate, and means on the actuating arm to engage said buffer and swing the same into the path of the actuating arm on the closing movement of the door.
6. A door stop and elo-ser comprising a casing having an extended attaching plate adapted to be secured to a door casing, a spring-controlled shaft journaled in said casing, an actuating arm rigid with said shaft and having a sliding connection with the door, an oscillating buffer mounted on said att-aching plate, means on the actuating arm to engage said buffer and swing the same into the path of the actuating arm on the closing movement of the door, and a xed buffer on the attaching plate adjacent the MoRRis c.
