Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE H. JAooBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Cracking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Hy invention has relation to improvements in nut cracking machines and the main object thereof is to produce suc-h a devi-ce that will crack the shells of the nuts, without unduly breaking theV meats.
A further object of my invention is t0 produce a device of the kind above indicated the mechanism of which will be simple in construction, eicient in operation and one which will not be expensive to produce.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts as are described in this specication, set forth in the appended claims, illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which the virtue of the construction of my invention is disclosed, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device viewed from the driving side. Fig. 2 is a vertical, transverse, sectional view, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is also a horizontal section, on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which like numerals designate like parts throughout, my invention is described as follows:
The body 1, of the device consists of vertically grooved corner ost 4, of side walls 2, and end walls 3. Eac of which walls abut said corner post and are fitted into the groove thereof, the lower ends of said corner extend downward terminating in legs 5. Mortised in said corner post and fitting against the inner faces of the said side walls are horizontal side pieces 6, which securely holds the body intact. Any number of said side pieces, which may be desired for the purpose indicated, may be employed in the construction of said body. Securely held to each of their ends to corresponding side pieces 6, are the cross pieces 7, said cross pieces being secured midway, between .the end wall of the said body, and one of said cross pieces arranged directly below the cracked. It is other. A shaft or spindle 8, is arranged in bearings 9, for rotation, said spindle being provided with screw threads 10, at its upper end, which screw threads receive a circular disk 11, which is held securely in position by means of a lock nut 12. Said shaft 8, is adjustably secured and held against vertical movement by means of the suitable collars 13, and bevel gear wheel 16, provided with set screws 14 and 15 respectively. Held to the lower Aend of said spindle, by means of a set screw 15, is said bevel gear 16, which intermeshes with a bevel gear wheel 17, held securely to a longitudinal shaft 18, by a set screw 19, said shaft 18, is journaled in bearings 20, in respe-ctive side pieces 6. A circular metal disk 2l provided with upturned lugs and an opening 22 is arranged just above said disk 11. Said disk 21 is held securely to adjacent side pieces 6, by means of nut and bolt connections 23 passing through ears provided at the out-er periphery of the disk and adjacent horizontal crosspieces 6. Mounted upon the last mentioned disk is a hopper 24 wherein is placed a quantity of nuts to be pointed out that the under face of the disk 21 is dished or slightly concaved in such a manner that the outer rim is closer to the upper face of the disk 1l than at the exterior of the opening 22, therein.
. The operation of my invention is as follows: The nuts being fed into the hopper 24, they pass down through the opening 22, falling upon the upper face of said disk l1. The centrifugal force caused by the rotation of said disk 11, causes the nuts to roll away from the center thereof, under and into contact with the under face of the disk 21, where they are gradually rolled toward the outer edge of the disk 11 into the lesser space between the said two disks. The in creased pressure thus caused, nally breaks the shells, which, together with the meats of the nuts, are discharged in the direction shown by the arrows into any suitable receptacle placed under the machine to receive them.
Although I have specifically described my invention, yet I may claim the right to make such changes as do not depart from the spirit thereof and as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim, is:
In a nut cracking machine, an inclosed rectangular frame, means in said frame forming a plurality of bearings, a vertical shaft revolubly mounted in said bearings, means surrounding said shaft for supportiig said shaft and comprising means for adjusting said shaft vertically, a'seoond shaft transversely supported in said frame, said second shaft being horizontal and extending outside of the frame, means on the horizontal shaft for driving said shaft, and means for driving said vertical shaft from the horizontal shaft, a stationary disk carried by the frame, a hopper directly supported by said disk, and a revoluble disk carried by and secured to the upper end of said vertical shaft and cooperating With said 15 stationary disk, substantially as shown and described.
