To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT TAUBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser-Feet for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in presser feet for sewing machines, and has for an object to provide means for guiding a facing strip of considerable width to a stitching mechanism, whereby one edge of said facing strip may be secured to a body garment.
A further object of the invention. is to provide a presser foot with a supporting bracket, in which is mounted a guiding roller over which a facing strip may be directed, and also an edge guide for directing the edge of the facing strip to the stitching mechanism, which bracket is made adjustable, whereby the relative position of the facing strip and stitching mechanism may be varied.
These and other objects will in part be obvious, and will in part be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention,Figure 1 is a front view of a sewing machine having my improvement applied thereto, and showing also the manner of guiding a facing strip and a body fabric; Fig. 2 is a plan view showing my improved presser foot; also the work support and edge guide for the body material; Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the presser foot; Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the same; Fig. 5 is a front view; and Fig. 6 is a side view.
In the drawings, I have shown a sewing machine comprising a work support 1 and overhanging arm 2, on which is mounted the usual needle lever 3 for reciprocating the needle bar and needles. These parts may be of any desired construction, although I prefer to use a sewing machine in which two needles are used and a looper which cooperates with both needles below the work support forming interlocking threads extending from one line of stitching to the other, which may be used in covering the raw edge of the material when stitching a binding strip to a body fabric.
The presser foot consists of a shank 5, which is secured to the lower end of the presser bar. Said shank carries a foot portion 6, which is provided with needle slots 4, 4 through which the needles pass. Said foot portion is pivoted to the shank in the usual manner, and a spring 7 yieldingly holds the presser foot in normal position with its foot portion parallel with the cloth plate. Said presser foot is provided at its forward end with a bracket 8. Said bracket carries an arm 9 at one end and a projecting plate 10 adjacent its other end, which is extended to form an edge guide for the binding strip.
Journaled in the plate 10 and the arm 9 is a roller 11, which extends across the front of the presser foot and is located at right angles to the line of feed. The bracket 8 also carries an edge guide 12, which is formed integral with and as an extension of the plate 10 (see Fig. t). Said edge guide 12 extends the full length of the foot portion of the presser foot. The bracket 8 is adjustably attached to the presser foot by a screw 13, which passes through a slot la in the outer end of the presser foot and extends into the bracket. The bracket is further secured to the presser foot by means of a slotted arm 15, which is secured to the edge guide 12, and is adapted to fit in a recess formed in the upper face of the presser foot. The slotted arm 15 is secured in adjusted positions by a screw 16.
The binding strip which is to be attached to the body fabric is led through suitable tension devices carried by a bracket 17 mounted on the head of the machine, and thence underneath a guide rod 18 between spaced. guiding ears 19, which are also carried by the head of the machine. After leaving the guiding rod 18, the facing strip passes directly to the rotatable guiding roller 11, which is preferably serrated or roughened, so as to rotate with the strip as it.
passes over the guiding roller and thus better guide the strip to the stitching mechanism. The edge of the strip is carried along the guiding plate 10, and the edge guide 12 underneath the presser foot, which is in line with the guiding plate. Said edge guide will determine the position of the facing strip relative to the stitch-forming mechanism. By loosening the screws 13 and 16, the edge guide, the guiding plate and the guiding roller may all be adjusted relative to the stitch-forming mechanism, so as to locate the lines of stitching in the facing strip at the desired distance from the edge of the facing strip.
When it is desired to stitch a facing strip to a body fabric, an edge guide 20 is used, which is attached to the cloth plate by suitable screws 21, so that said edge guide may be adjusted to properly guide the edge of the body fabric to the stitching mechanism. When it is desired to cover the edge of the body fabric by the looper thread which extends from one line of stitching to the other, the edge guide is preferably located substantially in line with the right hand needle, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The heads of the body fabric will then be guided between the two needles and close to the right hand needle. The looper thread joining the lines of stitching will completely cover and bind down the raw edge of the body fabric.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A presser foot for guiding a facing strip including in combination, a foo-t portion, a bracket secured tosaid foot portion, a guide roller carried by said bracket and extending transversely in front of said foot portion, an edge guide carried by said foot port-ion and extending underneath the same substantially the entire length thereof.
2. A presser foot for guiding a facing strip including in combination, a foot por tion, a bracket, a guiding roller carried by said bracket, an edge guide carried by said bracket and extending underneath said foot portion, and means for adjusting said bracket relative to said foot portion.
8. A presser foot for guiding a facing strip including in combination, a foot portion, a bracket, means for connecting said bracket to said foot portion, whereby said bracket may be adjusted transversely thereof, a guiding roller journaled in said bracket, an edge guide carried by said bracket for guiding the edge of a facing strip running over said guiding roller.

6. A presser foot for guiding a facing strip including in combination, a foot portion, a bracket, a guiding roller carried by said bracket, an edge guide carried by said bracket having a forwardly projecting por tion and a rearwardly projecting portion in alineInent therewith, and located beneath the foot portion.
7. A presser foot for guiding a facing strip including in combination, a foot portion, a guiding roller supported thereby and extending transversely in front of said foot port-ion, and an edge guide carried by the foot portion and extending underneath the same substantially the entire length thereof,
and having also a forwardly projecting guide.
8. A presser foot for guiding a facing strip including incombination, a foot por-' tion, a member having a transverse guiding surface over which said strip passes, located in advance of the foot portion, a guiding portion for the edge of said strip in advance of said transverse guiding surface, and a second guiding portion for the edge of said strip in the rear of said transverse guiding portion.
