To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE H. FRAZIER and JOHN M. CATLIo, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Carnegie, in
the county of Allegheny and State of Penn sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Derailing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a derailing device, and the primary object of our invention is to provide a device that can be easily and quickly swung into position upon a rail for derailing a car or train, so that the car or train cannot run into the rear end of a preceding car or train, a wash-out, a wreck, or pass a danger point.
Another object of our invention is to provide a derailing device that can be locked in an active position, so that the device cannot be'tampered with after having once been set.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the above type that can be advantageously used in connection with steam railways or electric railways.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan of the derailing device, Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the derailing block.
The reference numerals 1 denote tie plates provided with openings 2 and notches 3 adapted to receive ordinary spikes or other fastening means for retaining the tie plates 1 upon ties adjacent to the inner base flange 4 of a rail 5. The tie plates 1 are provided with vertical bearings 6 having extensions 7 extending on to the outer base flange 4 of the rail 5. The confronting sides of the bearings 6 have circular recesses 8 and openings 9, said openings accommodating a tie rod 10 having a head 11 at one end thereof and a'nut 12 at the opposite end. Pivotally mounted upon the tie rod 10 are apertured ears 13 and 14 of a diagonally extending derailing block 15. The ears 13 and 14 are provided with bosses 16 that extend into the recesses 8 and have bearing against the walls of said recesses to relieve the tie rod 10 of stresses and strains brought to bear upon .the same when the derailing block 15 is engaged by a car wheel. The bosses 16 have openings 17 alining with the openings of the ears 13 and 14, and said ears are provided with apertured lugs 18 adapted to register with apertured lugs 19, carried by the bearings 6, whereby a seal, padlock or locking device (not shown) can be placed in engagement with the aperturedlocking block 15 upon the head 19 of the rail 5.
The block 15 is disposed at an angle relatively to the rail 5 and the tie rod 10 and is formed integral with the apertured ears 13 and 14, the forward end of the block forming part of the ear 14 and the opposite end thereof protruding beyond the ear 13 on the head 19 of the rail. 5. The block 15 has the forward end thereof enlarged, as at 20, said enlargement terminating in a web 21 resting upon the head 19 of the rail, the web 21 gradually merging into the forward end of the block 15, which is beveled, as at 22, the enlargement 20 having a tapering groove 23 that inclines upwardly and merges into the web 21, and'this groove receives the flange of a car wheel, causing the flange to ride against the vertical wall 24 of the block 15 until the car wheel is carried off of the track. The web 21 has its forward or free edge for a major portion of its length positioned in a plane parallel with the plane of one side of the head of the rail. The bearing 6, at the forward end of the block, has a side enlargement- 30 to support the forward end of the block and relieve the connecting rod 10 of stresses and strains to which it would otherwise be subjected if it was not for this side enlargement. t
The derailing device is made of strong and durable metal and with the device locked in an active position upon a rail, a whole train can be easily derailed.
What we claim is 1. A derailing device comprising a pair of tie plates, bearings carried thereby, a tie rod mounted in said bearings, a diagonally extending derailing block having apertured ears pivotally mounted upon said tie rod, bosses carried by said ears and extending into said bearings, said block having one end thereof provided with an enlargement and further having a tapering web projecting therefrom and from said enlargement, said enlargement having an upwardly inclined tapering groove merging into said web, said derailing block and said web projecting upon the head of a rail, said web having its forward edge for a major portion of its length extending into a plane parallel to one side of the head of the rail, and means for locking said block in an active position relative to said bearings.
2. A derailing device comprising a pair of tie plates, bearings carried thereby, a tie rod mounted in said bearings, a diagonally extending derailing block having apertured ears pivotally mounted upon said tie rod, bosses carried by said ears and extending into said bearings, said block having one end thereof provided with an enlargement and further having a tapering web projecting therefrom and from said enlargement, said enlargement having an upwardly inclined tapering groove merging into said web, said derailing block and said Web projecting upon the head of a rail, said web having its forward edge for a major portion of its length extending into a plane parallel to one side of the head of the rail, and means for locking said block in an active position relative to said bearings, said block and-said web of such length as to project beyond one of said tie plates.

A derailing device comprising a pair of tie plates, bearings carried thereby, a tie rod mounted insaid bearings, a diagonally extending derailing block having apertured ears pivotally mounted upon said tie rod, bosses carried by said ears and extending into said bearings, said block having one end thereof provided with an enlargement and further having a tapering web projecting therefrom and from said enlargement, said enlargement having an upwardly inclined tapering groove merging into said web, saidderailing block and said web projecting upon the head of a rail, said web having its forward edge for a major portion of its length extending into a plane parallel to one side of the head of the rail, and means for locking said block in an active position relative to said bearings, said block and said web of such length as to project beyond one of said tie plates, the projecting portion of said block having its upper face beveled. 4. A derailing device comprising a pair of plates capable ofbeing secured to ties,
a diagonally extending derailing block pivotally connected to said plates and provided at one end with an enlargement having an upwardly inclined groove, a'tapering web integral with said block and enlargement, said block and web adapted to be positioned upon the head. of a rail, means for locking said block in an active position, said block and web of such length as to project beyond one of'said tie plates, the upper face of the projecting portion of said block inclining upwardly toward the'center of the block, a derailing device comprising a pair of tie plates each provided with an upright bearing, a tie rod mounted in said bearings, a diagonally disposed derailing block provided with a web and a groove, apertured ears projecting from said block and pivotally mounted upon said' tie rod, and bosses carried by said ears and extending into said bearings.
5. A derailing device comprising a pair of plates capable of being secured to ties, a diagonally extending derailing block pivotally connected to said plates and provided at one end with an enlargement having an upwardly inclined groove, a tapering web integral with said block and enlargement, said block and web adapted to be positioned upon the head of a rail, means for locking said block in an active position, said block and web of a length as to project beyond one of said tie plates, the upper face of the projecting portion of said block inclining upwardly toward the center of the block, a derailing device comprising a pair of tie plates each provided with an upright bearing, a tie rod mounted in said bearings, a diagonally disposed derailing block provided with a web and a groove, apertured ears projecting from said block and pivotally mounted upon said tie rod, bosses carried by said ears and extending into said bearings, and means for facilitating the locking of said block in an active position relative to said bearings. i

A derailing device comprising a diagonally extending block having formed integral therewith and projecting laterally therefrom below the top thereof a longitudinally extending web gradually decreasing in width from one end toward the other, said block having one end of one side thereof provided with a depending enlargement merging into said web and formed with an upwardly inclined groove terminating in said web, an apertured ear projecting from that end provided with the enlargement, an apertured ear projecting from said block intermediate its ends, each of said ears provided with a boss having an opening registering with the opening of its respective ear, bearings'adapted to be fixedly secured in position, said bosses extending in said bearings, and a tie rod extending through said ears, bosses and bearings, and provided with means to prevent longitudinal movement thereof. i I
7. A derailing device comprising a diago nally extending block having formed integral therewith and projecting laterally therefrom below the top thereof a longitudinally extending web "gradually decreas ing in Width from one end toward the other, said block having one end of one side thereof provided with a depending enlargement merging into said web and formed with an upwardly inclined groove terminating in said Web, an apertured ear projecting from that end provided with the enlargement, an apertured ear projecting from said block intermediate its ends, each of said ears provided with a boss having an opening registering with the opening of its respective ear, bearings adapted to be fixedly secured in position, said bosses extending in said bearings, and a tie rod extending through said ears, bosses and bearings, and provided with means to prevent longitudinal movement thereof, and means carried by said ears and adapted to be connected to said bearings for maintainmg said block in an active position.
8. A derailing device comprising a diagonally disposed block pro-vided with a lateral web, said block and web adapted to project upon the head of a rail, apertured ears projecting laterally from the block and each provided with a boss having an opening registering with the opening of its respective ears, bearings for said bosses, said bearings adapted to be fixedly secured in position, said bosses in connection with said bearings constituting pivot means for the block, a tie rod extending through said ears, bosses and bearings, and means to prevent longitudinal movement of the tie rod.
9. A derailing device comprising a diagonallydisposed block provided with a lateral Web, said block and web adapted to project upon the head of a rail, apertured ears projecting laterally from the block and each provided with a boss having an opening registering with the opening of its respective ears, bearings for said bosses, said bearings adapted to be fixedly secured in position, said bosses in connection with said bearings constituting pivot means for the block, a tie rod extending through said ears, bosses and bearings, and means to prevent longitudinal movement of the tie rod, and means carried by the ears and adapted to be connected to the bearings for maintaining the block in an active position.
