TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.

' Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. LORENZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- WVriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and one of the objects thereof is to provide new and improved means for arresting in a silent manner the movements of the various operative part's thereof. Another object. is to provide improved mechanism designed to reduce to'a minimum impact or concussion of the moving parts during the operation of the machine.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which w1ll be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the ap li-v cation of which will be indicated in the ollowing claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated several of various possible embodiments of my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional view taken through a portion of the machine, showing a key lever and universal bar with the present invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position of the parts when the key lever is depressed 3 Fig. 3 shows a differ.-

Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the frame of the machine, 2 a universal bar shaft carrying rocker arms 8', said arms in turn supporting rods 1 whose lower ends are interposed in the support of a universal bar 5. The universal bar inthe present instance is provided with a cushion 6 upon which rests the several key levers, one of which is shown at 7 pivoted upon a bar 8 and held upwardly as by means of. a spring 9.
