To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. lVnA'rHnuwax, citizen of the United States, residing at Milledgeville, in the county of Carroll and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump- Supports, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to pump supports and has for its object the provision of a comparatively simple and thoroughly sanitary device of this character, the construction of which is such as to afford a solid foundation for a pump and at the same time effectually prevent the entrance of rats, toads and other vermin to the interior of the well.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sectional support, the parts of which may be readily assembled beneath the pump stock and a concrete curb or platform built around the same by merely ele.- vating the pump stock and without the necessity of removing the water pipe or otherwise dismantling said pump.
A further obj-ect is to provide means for detachably securing the pump stock to the support, and means whereby the securing devices may be adjusted so as to permit the attachment of pump stocks having base flanges of different sizes.
A further object is to provide novel means for anchoring the support within the concrete curb or platform, said anchoring means also serving to reinforce the concrete and prevent cracking or disintegration thereof.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efliciency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of const-ruction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and acco-mpanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a pump support constructed in accordance with my invention, the pump stock being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially in the plane of the upper anchoring rods. Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. l. Fig. t is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line ic-4 of Fig. 3 and looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view, showing the construction of the securing device for fastening the base of the pump stock in position on the support. Fig. 6 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 7-7.of Fig. l, and loolrir'ig downward, showing the fastening devices adjusted radially of the support to permit the attachment of a pump stock having a relatively small base flange. Fig. 8 is a similar view, showing the fastening devices adjusted to permit the attachment o-f a pump stock having a. larger base flange. Fig. 9 is a top plan view, partly in section, showing the lateral adjustment of the fastening devices. Fig. l() is a perspective view of one of the fastening devices detached, showing the several parts in position to be assembled.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved pump support forming the subject matter of the present invention coinprises a hollow body portion, preferably cylindrical in cross section and formed of mating sections 5 and 6, said body portion being embedded in a concrete curb or platform 7 and provided with a laterally extending flange 8 adapted to receive and support the base flange of a pump stock, indicated at 9.
The sections 5 and 6 comprising the body portion are provided with vertically disposed flanges 10 having registering perforations l1 formed therein for the reception of bolts or similar lfastening devices 12, which latter serve to hold t-he sections rigidly in assembled position preparatory to filling in the concrete or other material forming the curb or platform. These flanges 10 also form in effect anchoring wings to assist in preventing turning movement of the pump support within the well curb. The sections 5 and 6 are also preferably provided with depending ears 13 which form a connection between the supporting flange and hollow body portion and are provided with registering perforations for the passage of secur-- ing bolts 14. The abutting face of each support section at the flange 8 is preferably provided with a lug 15 adapted to enter a correspondingly shaped depression 1G formed in the abutting face of the mating section to assist in alining said sections preparatory to applying the securing bolts.
Extending transversely through suitable openings formed in the vertical flanges 10, are spaced anchoring rods 17 and 18, preferably arranged at an angle to each other and having theirv opposite ends extended laterally beyo-nd the exterior wall of the pump support and provided with terminal heads 19. These rods 17 and 18 not only form anchorin members for the um i su 3 Jort but also serve to reinforce and strengthen the concrete curb or platform and assist in preventing cracking o-r disintegration thereof. Each support section is also preferably prosided with an exterior boss 20 arranged between the flanges 10 and having a threaded socket formed therein for the reception of a correspondingly threaded bolt 21. The bolts 21 are preferably shorter than the anchoring members or bolts 17 and 18 and serve to assist in strengthening the platform as well as to prevent accidental displacement of the pump support.
Formed in the supporting flange 8, are a plurality of spaced substantially circular openings 22 adapted to register with smaller openings formed in the base flange of the pump stock to permitthe insertion of bolts or similar fastening devices 23. Mounted on the lower face of the supporting flange 8, are a plurality of adjustable plates 24 having cylindrical enlargements 25 formed on one side thereof and which enter the adjacent circular openings 22 in the supporting flange7 said enlargements and plates being pierced by slots 26 to allo-w the shanks of` said bolts to pass through the plates 24 and engage suitable clamping nuts 27 It will here be noted that the enlargements 25 are journaled in the openings 22 so that by' rotating the plates 24, the bolts or fastening devices 23 may be adjusted both radially and laterally of the supporting flange 8 and thus permit the attachment o-f pump stocks having base flanges of different sizes. 1twill also be noted that the upper face of each plate 24forms in effect a shoulder for engagement with the lower face of t-he supporting flange 8 so that when the nuts 27 are adjusted on the threaded ends of the bolts,
'the base flange of t-he pump stock will be rigidly secured in position on the support. Suitable washers 28 are interposed between the clamping nuts 27 and the lower faces of the adjustable plates to receive the impact of the clamping nuts and prevent said nuts from working through the slots. lf desired however, thel enlargements 25 may be dispensed with and the adjusting plates formed with smooth upper and lower faces, as will be readily understood.
The supporting flange 8 is preferably spaced a short distance from the upper surface of the concrete curb or platform so as to facilitate the removal and replacement of the fastening devices and also to allow the fastening devices to be tightened when necessary.
Attention is here called to the fact that the concrete curb 27 not only forms a solid foundation fo-r the pump support, but, by engagement with the outer walls of said support, effectually prevents the entrance of rats, toads and other vermin to the interior of the well, thus rendering the device t-horoughly sanitary in every respect;
It will also be noted that by making the pump supports in sections, the parts thereof may be readily assembled beneath the pump stock and the concrete curb or platform built around the same, by merely elevating the base of the pump stock and without the necessity of removing the water pipe or otherwise dismantling the pump.
It will of course be understood that the fastening devices may be used in connection with either sectional or integral pump supports and that the number of reinforcing rods may be varied or even entirely dispensed with, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A pump support including a hollowV body portion having a supporting flange provided with spaced openings, slotted plates extending across said openings, a pump stock resting on the supporting flange, and fastening devices extending through the pump stock and slots in the plates for detachably securing the pump stock in different positions of adjustment on said supporting flange.
2. A pump support including a hollow body portion having a supporting flange and provided with spaced openings, slotted plates bearing against the lower face of the supporting flange and having enlargements extending within said openings, a pump stock resting on the supporting flange, and fastening devices extending through the pump stock and slots in the plates, said fastening `devices being adjustable radially and laterally of the supporting flange.
3. A pump support including a hollow body portion having a supporting flange and provided with spaced openings, slotted adjusting members journaled in said openings, a pump stock supported on the flange, and
fastening devices extending through thev iso supporting flange for engagement with the base flange of a pump stock and provided with spaced circular openings, adjustable slotted plates having enlargements extending within the vopenings and terminating short of the upper face of the supporting flange, said enlargements defining annular shoulders for engagement with the lower face of said supporting flange, and fastening devices extending through the base flange of the pump stock and through said slotted plates for securing the pump stock in position on the supporting fiange.
5. A pump support including a hollow body portion formed of mating sections and provided at its upper end with a laterally extending supporting flange for engagement with a pump stock, anchoring members carried by the sections of the support and extending horizontally therefrom at intermediate points of the height thereof to be embedded in a curb, and fastening devices extending through the pump stock and supporting flange for securing said pump stock in position thereon.
6. A pump support including aV hollow body portion formed of mating sections, each provided with a vertical perforated flange and a horizontal flange, bolts passing through the perforations ofA the vertical flanges for securing the sections of the support in assembled position and projecting beyond the same to be embedded in a curb, a pump stock resting on the horizontal flange, and fastening devices passing through the pump stock and horizontal flange, said fastening devices being adjustable bot-h laterally and radially of the body portion.
7. The combination with a concrete well curb, of a hollow body portion embedded in the concrete and provided with a supporting flange for engagement with a pump stock, horizontally disposed anchoring rods carried by the hollow body portion and disposed in different horizontal planes and in intersecting vertical planes, and projecting beyond the body portion to be embedded in the curb, and means extending through the pump stock and supporting flange kfor securing the pump stock in position on said supporting flange.
8. The combination with a concrete well curb, of a hollow body portion embedded in said concrete and formed of mating sections having vertically disposed perforated flanges adapted to abut against each other, bolts passing through some of the perforations in the vertical flanges, horizontal anchoring rods extending through other of said perforations, auxiliary rods extending laterally from the support sections and of less length than the first mentioned rods, a horizontal flange formed on the hollow body portion for engagement with a pump stock, and fastening devices extending through the pump stock and flange for securing the parts in position. The combination with a concrete Well curb, of a hollow support embedded in the concrete and provided with a laterally extending supporting flange for engagement with a pump stock, said support being formed in sections, each of which is provided with a vertically disposed perforated flange and a depending ear to register with the Hange and ear on the mating section, fastening devices passing through some of the perforations in the vertical flanges, similar fastening devices passing through the ears, longitudinally disposed anchoring rods passing through other of said perforations and embedded in the concrete, threaded bosses formed on the exterior walls of the support sections, rods engaging the threads on the bosses, and fastening devices extending through the pump stock and flange for rigidly securing the pump stock on the suport. p In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
