Be it known that I, CECIL J. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syrup Containers and Deliverers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in syrup containers and deliverers for soda water fountains and has for its object the provision of a device of this character of improved construction and efiicient in operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a device embodying my invention, taken on line a'w of Fig. 2, Fig. 2, a horizontal section taken on line g of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a side elevation of the plunger piston employed in the device, Fig. 4, a section taken on line zz of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5, a vertical section through the lower portion of the delivery well of the device similar to Fig. 1, but showing the plunger piston in position for discharge. Fig. 6, a sect-ion taken on line z-z of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises an outer casing 1 divided by a central partition 2 into two adjoining tanks 3 and 4 respectively. Casing 1 is provided with a removable cover plate 5 and a sliding cover 6 is provided to give access to tanks 3 and 4. At one end of partition 2 a delivery well 7 is formed and a discharge spout 8 is provided at the bottom thereof. At its bottom well 7 is provided with ports 9 and 10 communicating with the lower portions of tanks 3 and 4 respectively, and the bottoms of said tanks are sloped as indicated to direct liquids in said tanks toward said ports.
A plunger piston 11 is arranged to reciprocate in well 7 and is provided with recesses 12 and 13 adapted to register with ports 9 and 10 when said plunger piston is in elevated position, and recess 12 is made of substantially twice the capacity of recess 13. erating knob 15 at its upper end projecting from the top of tank 1. A cup 16 is arranged in the upper portion of well 7 and is perforated at the bottomto permit the passage of stem 14. Stem 14 carries a stop block 17 adapted to contact with the under side of a cap 18 secured to the top of tank 1, as indicated. A leather buffer 19 is placed on top of block 17 to deaden the shock of contact between said block and the under side of said cap. A compression spring 20 is arranged on stem 14 between block 17 and the bottom of cup 16 and serves to hold plunger piston'll normally in elevated position with recesses 12 and 13 registering with ports 9 and 10. A shell 21 is arranged about well 7 and spaced a short distance therefrom so as to form air passages 22 and 23 surrounding said well. At its lower end shell 21 is provided with inwardly extending lips or flanges 24 which are dressed to the same size loore as well 7 so as to permit the passage of plunger piston 11 and to place the lower ends of passages 22 and 23 in open communication with the lower portion of said Well.
In use, the tanks 3 and 4 are supplied with different flavors of soda water syrup or different portions of flavors. For example, one tank may be supplied with crushed fruit and the other with a syrup adapted to be used therewith. When it is desired to withdraw a charge from said tanks a glass is placed in discharge spout 8 and plunger piston 11 depressed by placing the hand on knob 15. In this manner plunger piston 11 will be forced to the position indicated in Fig. 5 which places recesses 12 and 13 in open communication with discharge spout 8 and permits the simultaneous discharge of the materials contained in said recesses into the glass, and at the same time closes ports 9 and 10 to prevent further flow of syrup from said tanks. Upon release of knob 15, the plunger piston arises under the influence of spring 20 to normal position, whereupon a new supply of syrup Wlll flow into recesses 12 and 13. Upon the discharge of the syrup from recesses 12 and 13 they become filled with air so that when the plunger piston returns to initial position said recesses are filled with air and the passages 22 and 23 facilitate the ready escape of this air from said recesses and thus the quick recharging of the plunger piston.
By this arrangement different portions of a flavor may be kept separately but discharged together. This is especially advantageous in conjunction with crushed fruit flavors, since if the crushed fruit and the syrup which goes with it were mixed together in the first instance, the crushed fruit would tend to collect at the bottom, so that the first charges withdrawn would contain practically all crushed fruit and little or no syrup, while the last charges withdrawn would contain practically all syrup and little or no crushed fruit. By using the construction set forth, however, a certain definite quantity of crushed fruit and a certain definite quantity of syrup will be discharged together, thus giving uniform results.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described "'I the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and-modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variationsand modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters communicating with the bottoms of said tanks; and a spring held delivery plunger in said well having recesses adapted to register with said ports, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described comprising two adjoining separate tanks; a well located between said tanks, said well being open at the bottom and provided with ports communicating with the bottoms of said tanks; and a spring held delivery plunger in said well having recesses of different capacities adapted to register with said ports, substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described comprising a casing divided into two tanks by a partition; a well between said tanks at one end of said partition, there being ports in the sides of said well communicating with the bottoms of said tanks and a discharge orifice at the bottom; a vertically reciprocating plunger piston operating in said well and provided near its bottom with recesses adapted to register with said ports when said plunger piston is in elevated position; and a spring arranged to hold said plunger piston normally in elevated position, substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described com prising a casing divided into two tanks by a partition; a well between said tanks at one end of said partition, there being ports in the sides of'said well communicating with the bottoms of said tanks and a disclmrge orifice at the bottom; a vertically reciprocating plunger piston operating in said well and provided near, its bottom with recesses of different sizes adapted to register with said ports when said plunger piston is in elevated position; and a spring arranged to hold said plunger piston normally in elevated position, substantially as described.
