To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID J. ALLIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ontonagon, in the county of Ontonagon, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seam- Rippers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to seam rippers.
The object of the invention resides in an improved construction of device of the character referred to through the manipulation of which the seams of connected pieces of cloth may be ripped with great speed and efficiency.
To this end the invention resides in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device attached to a fixed support, such as a table; said device being shown partly in section and with the cutting element thereof in full lines in active position and in dotted lines in inactive position; Fig. 2, a front View of the device; and, Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a fragment of a table or other suitable fixed support. The device proper comprises a U- shaped bracket having parallel arms 10 and 11 between which the support A is inserted when the device is secured thereto. A clamping screw 12 is mounted in the arm 10 of the bracket and is adapted to firmly e11- gage the support A and thus prevent detachment of the bracket therefrom. The arm 11 is provided at its end adjacent the bight portion of the bracket with a projection 13, the limiting edge of which projection is convexly curved as at 14. A slot 15 extends longitudinally through the projection 13 and has its base 16 inclined toward the bight portion of the bracket. Alining threaded apertures 17 and 18 extend transversely through the projection 13, while a cutting element or knife 19 is pivotally mounted upon a screw 20 working in the threaded apertures 17 and 18. When disposed in active or cutting position the inner end of the back of the knife 19 rests continuously upon the base 16 of the slot 15, while the convexly curved limiting edge of the projection 13 forms a support for the connected cloth as the threads of the seam thereof are moved against the cutting edge of the knife 19.
Should it be desired to dispense with the use of the device without removing same from the support A it is only necessary to shift the knife 19 on its pivot from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to the position shown in dotted lines, when the cutting edge thereof will be disposed down and thus shielded from possible damage.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a U-shaped bracket adapted to receive a fixed support between the arms thereof, means carried by said bracket for clamping same to a fixed support, an extension formed on said bracket provided with a longitudinal slot therethrough positioned in a plane at right angles to the upper face of the fixed support when the U-shaped bracket is secured to said supporting part, and a cutting element pivoted in said slot.
2. A device of the character described comprising a U-shaped bracket adapted to receive a fixed support between the arms thereof, clamping means carried by said bracket for securing the same to a fixed support, a projection on said bracket provided with a slot extending longitudinally of the bracket and positioned in a plane at right angles to the upper face of the supporting part when the U-shaped bracket is secured to said supporting part, said slot having its bottom inclined toward the bight end of the U-shaped frame, and a cutting element pivotally mounted in said slot and adapted to be supported upon the inclined bottom of the latter when said cutting element is disposed in operative position.
