Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2c, 1912.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES Km'roN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Fairhaven, county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, and WILLIAM J. SCHIL- LINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millvale, county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice- Creepers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ice creepers, and tlie objects of our invention are to provide a simple and efi'ective anti-creeping device that can be easily and quickly applied to heels of various sizes, and to provide an ice creeper that presents a neat appearance upon a heel and can be worn upon heels that are worn or irregular.
Further objects of our invention are to provide a light and compact ice creeper that can be easily carried in the vest pocket and applied to a heel without soiling the hands, and to accomplish the above results by a device having spikes so arranged that there is no liability of the turning of the ankle or danger of the wearer of the ice creeper tripping by reason of the device catching on something.
We attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then'claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe device, and Fig. 2. is a longitudinal sectional view of the. same.
An ice creeper in accordance with this invention comprises two substantially U- shaped members 1 and 2, the former havng heel engaging prongs 3 adjacent to the side edges thereof, said prongs being positioned at right angles to the member 1 and adapted to engage the wall 4 of a heel 5 as best shown in Fig. 2. The sides of the member 1 are provided with V-shaped spikes 4 that can be easily sharpened when worn, and said member is provided with a slot 5 that has the side edges thereof provided with ratchet teeth 6. When stamping or cutting the slot 5, the material is cut to provide the teeth 6 at the side edges of the slot 5 and then the teeth bent outwardly at right angles. to the member 1.
The member 2 has spikes 7 similar to the spikes 1 and a heel plate 8 at right angles to the member 2, said heel plate having a boss 9 for an adjustable set screw 10. The inner end of the set screw is reduced to provide a pin 11 that engages in therear wall of the heel 5. The member 2 is reduced to provide a tongue 12 having an angularly disposed T-shaped head 13 that protrudes through the slot 5 and engages the teeth 6. The head 13 is placedin engagement with the teeth 6 prior to clamping the members 1 and 2 upon the heel 5, and it is through the medium of the head 13 and the teeth 6 that the ice creeper can be lengthened or shortened to fit upon heels of various sizes.
As the main portion of the ice creeper is removed from the side edges of the heel, the ice creeper can be readily positioned upon worn down heels.
The spikes 4 and 7 provide a substantial bearing surface that engages in a smooth or frozen surface and prevents the wearer of the device from slipping or falling that 'would in all probability result in injury.
Our device is made of light and durable metal and when properly applied can be safely worn without injury to a shoe.
What we claim is 1. A device of the type described comprising members, depending spikes carried by said members, heel engagingprongs carried by one of said members, a heel plate carried by the other of said members, means carried by said heel plate and cooperating with said prongs in clamping saiddevice upon a heel, and means including a T- ,shaped head and teeth for adjustably con meeting said memberstogether.
' 2. A device of the type described comprising members, depending spikes carried by said members, ratchet teeth carried by one of saidfmembers, an angularly disposed In testimony whereof We aflix our signeh tongue carried by the other of said memtures in the presence of two witnesses. bers and extending. through the first men- CHARLES KIRTON.
