GAS-BURNER.
Patented N ov, 26, 1912.
Application filed December 14, 1909, Serial No; 533,053. Renewed July 18, IP12. Serial No. 710,284.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, EDWIN G. IVAN ZANDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of thecity of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas-burners, and more particularly to those of the Bunsen type, and has for its object to-produce a burner which will bring about as complete a combustion of gas as possiblein that gasand mixed with the proper supply of air.
air-mixture is ignited while passing out of the burner in a finely divided state.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure '1 is afront view of an embodiment of my'invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig.3 is a fragment-a1 sectional view of a detail.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring with a mixer, whereby the gas is intimately The'burner itself 'consists of two parts or members, a lower. member 6 and an upper member 9. The lower member is of flaring 4 shape and has alvtflanged rim 7 at its lowerpart adapted to surround the pipe 5,and a' flan'ged rinr 8, at its upper part adapted to surround the other member 9 of the burner. The member 6 fits snugly; around the member 9. and is so tightly clamped thereon by reason of the expansion to which the flange I is put, that no air'ma'y ass between the members. The upper mem er 9 consists of a top-plate 1 0 and a plurality of ribs 12 separated from each other by annular openings 11 'of a definite width and distance apart, while struts 13 bind the top-plate and the separate ribs 1 2 to ether; Thefnember 9 is preferably'made 0 cast material and in the form of a cup having innervertical ribs,
which'casting is then subjected to a peripheral cutting so as to provide the casting with a plurality of slots or openings corresponding to the openings 11, the remaining material of the wall of the cup forming the ribs 12 and the vertical. ribs forming the struts 13.
In the embodiment .shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the ribs 12 as also theplat'e 10, are provided with inclined surfaces 15 which serve to the drawing, the pipe 5 is connected with a suitable supply of gas and' to form outwardly-flaring or V-shaped openings and bring about thereby a spreading of the gas during its ignition. These out-- wardly flaring openings may also be arranged as to terminate in parallel channels as shown in Fig. 3. The member 6 is preferably madeof pressed steel and its upper flange 8 surrounds the. lowest" rib of the member 9. The member 9 is of larger diameter than thepipe 5, and the member 6 is provided with an upwardly-inclined surface, so that the gas when passing out of the upper end of the pipe 5 spreads when enter ing the member 9, and the member 9 thus acts as a reservoir or gas-container prior to the ignition of the gas. The gas is. then .caused to pass out of the openings 11 and is thus subjected to a div1s1on or spreading partly on account of the outwardly-flaring shape of the openings 11 and at the exterior of which shell the spread portions of gas are ignited. By thus dividing up the stream of gas into separate smaller streams, the ignited portions thereof are capable-0f being acted upon to a considerable degree by the combustion of the gas is secured. .The struts 13, which, in the embodiment shown in the 'drawln are $13 in number," also serve to of gas from the interior of the member 9 to the exterior thereof; in. other words, the flame is of the same intensity at all the exterior-parts of the member 9.
lar openings, and further in providing the interior of the openings with inner parallel channels, and in arranging the openings so as to be V-shaped, and further in'- the gas burner comprising a cup-shaped member and a flaring lower member secured at its upper oxygen of the air, and thereby a very good 7 My invention therefore consists of an im-' 'proved burner hav ng an inverted cupshaped member provided with a plurality of outwardly-flaring contiguously placed annu-- part to the lower part of said cup-shaped member, and lastly, in providing such a burner with vertical ribs integral with the annular ribs.
I have shown several embodiments of my invention, but I do not wish to limit myself to the same, since changes may be made therein Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim as new:
1. In a gas-burner, an inverted cup shaped member provided with a plurality of horizontally disposed outwardly flaring contiguo-usly placed annular openings.
2. A gas-burner comprising an inverted cup-shaped member provided with a plurality of horizontally disposed outwardly-flarshaped member.
ing annular openings contiguously placed,
and a flaring lower member secured at its wider part to the lower part of said cup- 3. A gas-burner comprising an inlet-pipe,
a one-piece inverted cup-shaped memberhaving vertical ribs on the inner face of the walls of said member, said walls being pro- 1 vided with a plurality of horizontally disposed outwardly-flaring openings, whereby outwardly-tapering annular ribs are formed integral with said vertical ribs, and an upwardly and outwardly flaring lower member provided with upper and lower annular flanges shrunk upon said cup-shaped member and said pipe respectively.
4. In a gas-burner, an inverted cup-shaped member provided with a plurality of V- shaped contiguously placed annular openlngs.
5. In a-gas-burner, an inverted cup-shaped member provided with a plurality of outwardly-flaring contlguously placed annular. openings, the interior of said openings terv minating in parallel channels.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
