To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. RnncKnR, a citizen of the United'States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in saw filing machines, its object being to provide a machine by which saws may be quickly and accurately filed, which has, among other things, means for adjustment to teeth of different pitch, and means for setting and adjusting the saws.
More particularly my invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

In the drawings A represents the frame of the machine, upon which a bed plate 2 is slidably supported as by means of dovetailed connection 3. A saw 4 is removably held at the outer edge of the bed plate as by means of a pair of jaws 5 and 6, the jaw 5 being preferably secured upon the outer edge of the plate and the jaw 6 hav ing thumb screw support 7 in the arms 8, said arms having pivotal connection 9 with A pair of diamond shaped stops 10 are pivotally supported in front of the forward edge of the bed plate to engage with the teeth at the opposite ends of the saw 4 and hold the saw edge in alinement with the edge of the bed plate.
Forming a support for the filing mechanism and for the mechanism for imparting longitudinal movement to the plate 2 is a frame B. The frame B has pivotal support 11 on the sides of the machine base and is adapted to be set in adjusted positions upon said support by means of a thumbscrew 12 of the frame and engaging with the guideway 13 carried by the machine base.
In order to impart longitudinal step by step movement to the bed plate I provide the following mechanism. J ournaled upon the frame B is a transverse operating shaft 14 carrying at one end a cam 15. Having fulcrum support 16 upon the side of the frame B alongside said cam is an arm 17, an antifriction roller 18 having slidable support 19 in the upper end of said arm in position to be engaged by the periphery of the cam 15. A scale 20 is carried by the upper end of the arm 17 in connection with the antifriction roller 18 for the purpose hereinafter set forth. The lower end of the arm 17 has pivotal connection 21 with a head 22 having screw shaft connection 23 with a block 24 slidably supported upon the inner side of the frame B as by means of the dovetailed joint 25. The block 24 can ries a pair of hinged fingers 26 held rearwardly against the teeth of the saw by means of springs 27. The rotation of the shaft 14 will cause the outer curved edge of the cam to turn the arm 17 upon the passing through the bottom fulcrum 16, sliding the block 24 forward and carrying with itcthe saw by means of the engagement of the fingers 26 therewith. As the roller 18 reaches the cutaway portion 28 of the cam 15 the arm 16 will by gravity swing back to normal position. By means of the thumb screw 19 the throw of the arm is adjusted to adapt the machine to saws having teeth of different pitch, and by means of the thumb screw 23 the block 24 is adjusted to bring the fingers 26 properly into alinement with the teeth.
In order to file the saw teeth the file 29 is supported in bearings 30 slidable in the vertical bar '31 having hinge support 32 at. its lower end uponthe cross bar 33 of theframe B. In Fig, 10 is shown a method of fastening the file in the bearings which consists of a clamp 34 formed with an opening 35 to receive the end of the file and with a screw 36 threaded through the side of the bearing head and engaging with said clamp. By adjustment of the screw 36 the size of the opening 35 may be restricted. The
blocks 30 are provided with runways 37 slidably engaging with the vertical bar 31. The upper end of the bar 31 is formed with an opening 38 through which the shaft 14 passes, the bar 31 adjacent to said shaft carrying an antifriction roller 39 engaging with thefront-face of the cam. Secured to the lower block 30 is an upwardly extending spring arm 40 formed at its upper end with a relatively large opening 41 through which the shaft 14 passes. A coil spring 42 is interposed between the arm 40 and bar 31 to force the bar inwardly into the cutaway portion .43 of the cam when the parts are in the position indicated-in Fig. 4.

In operation the saw 4 isfirst secured between the jaws 5 and6 as indicated in Fig. 1, and the arms .set by means of the thumb screws 19 to acco-rd'with the pitch of the teeth of the saw to be filed the adjustment beingv determined .by" the scale 20. The

indicated in Fig; 18, and with it the file. The rotation of the shaft 14 by the handle willcausethe cam 15 to force the upper end ofthe bar. 31 outward against the tension of the. spring 32 when the roller 39 is being engaged by thezouter portion of the face of the cam. When the cutaway portion 49 of the. face of the cam is being carried past the antifriction roller :39 the spring 42 will force the upper end of the arm 31 inward-as shown inFig. 4 carryingand holdingathe file in engagement with the teeth of the saw.
Consequently during that portion of the time that the bar is forced inward by its spring the file will be engaging with and acting upon the teeth of the saw and during the remainder of the time the cam-will be holding the upper end of thebar 31 outward and the file out of engagement with the saw. The cam is so positioned that the file will beheld in contact with the teeth during either the upward or downward stroke, and out of contact with the teeth of the sawiduring the opposite stroke. The rotation of the shaft 14 by the handle 44 will likewise impart step by step movement to the block 24 to carry the saw forward the distance -of one tooth for each forward movement. Asthe saw is being carried forwardly through the machine the abutm'ents 1O willbe turned upon their pivotal supports to prevent their impeding the movement of the saw. Where it is desired to use the device in connection with a circular saw I may use the pin 46 detachably fitted in the opening 47 in the bed plate and rotatably supporting the circular saw 48. a
I claim as my invention:
1. A machine ofthe class described comprising in combination a fixed base, a longitudinally slidable saw support on said base,'a frame pivotally supported on said base to swing in a vertical plane, meanscarried by said frame and cooperating :with said base to hold 7 said, frame in 7 adjusted positions, a file support vertically slidable in said frame, and meansfor swinging saidframe upon its pivotalsupport' and imparting step by step movement to said slidable saw support.
