Letters PatentuNo. 104,536, dated .Tune 2l, 1870.
IMPnovnMeNT Ilv` GRAINMEASURING. Armen-MEM To 'rr-naaenema-Ivmcanvas,-`
` p l The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent'nd making part of the same.
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN BAKER, of Addison,
of! Lenawee and State of Michigan, Measuring and Tallying Attachments to Thrashing- Machines;` and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon vand being a part of this specificatiomin whichv l p `Figure is a sideIelevation ot' the rear end of a thrashuIg-machine withI my improvement attached, and n f `Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. v
Like letters indicate lilce parts in each figure. The natureof this invention relates 4to the con struction of aI grain-measuring mechanism for moving the same, after-mately, l drawers of a giverrfcapacity, directing the' grain into striking off the filled box,
while, at the time the hopper is moved over theemp- `ty drawer,` a. counter is, acted upon and its index ,I I moved aI degree, its -dial indicating; at all times, the fnumbei of drawers that have been lled and withdrawn; I drawers, and in the in the new and peculiar construction of' the general `construction of its va rions parts, as hereinafter more fully shown and s'et' forth. I v I I y In the drawingi A represents the lower rear part of a thrashingmachine .below theseparator, which discharges its `grain into the vibrating shoe-B. I
Gis a hopper, openI its full length across themachine, and sliding on cleatsa, secured to the inner walls of the machine.I y Y Directly under the cleats two drawers, D D', `are in- Aserted in the walls yof the machine, transverely across it, between suitable guides, b.' i y I l E is a rock-shaft, journaled4 `in the lower rear part of the machine, Arotated by a` lever,"E, and provided,
within the wallsv A, with rocker-arms, c, with which are connected theends of slides O', carrying the hop-- per on the cleats a.
come into contact with I the end p g and tallying\ attachf i ment `to theseparator of `a thrashing-machine, and
consists in the peculiar construction of a'reciprocating, `'illingand stri-king` hopper, and the overa pair of grain` Byvibrating-the lever ofthe rock `shaft, `the hopper may ,beJ moved over either drawer, `guiding the grain from the shoe into it.A As it passes over theY full drawer itsedge strikes ol the surplus' grain,.carrying it into the empty drawer, which may then ,be withdrawn and emptied into a bag. The
drawer which is being filled cannot be withdrawn un til' the hopper is moved away, the rear -end of the drawer being provided with a strip, d, which would attempt to'withdraw it were made.
The drawer fronts are doors, pivoted to the sides,
`near the top, andIheld in place by a bolt, c, while f is a bale, for conveniently handling them'.
g is an aperture in the wall ofthe machine, enabling the attendant to see the hopper andll'awers, so that,I
when one is full, he may ll the other 211111. withdraw the:
ont, resting its rear edge on the floorv of the machine.. With one .hand he'sus.-
full one, drawing it nearly tains the front end, by the bale, over theI bag-'to be {lled; with the other he opens thedoor, and, jin`clining I the drawer into themonth of thegbag, empties the grainv therein, and returns the drawer to its place. v
To keep the tally of the number of drawers emptied, a counter or tallying-machine, F, of any approved form', is 'attachedl to thetwall of the thrasher, over the rock-shaft, and provided with au actuating lever, F', which, each time the same vis lifted, will cause the index to move forward a degree ou the dial.
Onthe rock-shaft Vis a tappet, h, so disposed that,`
each time the hopper is moved back'and forth, it will lift the actuating lever and register 4 on the dial, so that, if the boxes or drawers are made of capacity of one bushel each, the number of'bnshels thrashedand taken from the machine will be tallied with nnfailing accuracy. 7 y
I claimas my invention-4 p 1. The hopper. C,'rec iprocated on the cleats a by the rock-shaft E, lever nected to its slides G', as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The grain-drawers D D', having their fronts pivoted Vas described,-and provided with bale f, strip al, and bolt fe, as and for the purpose set forth. i
3. The construction and arrangement of the hopper C, drawers D D, rock-shaft E, lever E', tappet h, .I actuating lever F,and counter l?, with' relation to .each other and a thrashing-machine, in the Irianner and forv Athe purposes'. specied.
