To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. MoMANr GAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thermopolis, in the county of Fremont and State of yoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inHorse- I Controlling Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in horse controlling devices 'which are designed more particularly for breaking in and training colts and handling vicious and unruly horses and the primary object of the present invention is to provide means for holding the harness designed for this use upon the back of the animal.
A further object of the present invention is to construct a harness to be used in such devices that the various parts may be easily construction and formation of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and particularly pointed out in the appended drawings in which,

Reference being had now to the accompanying drawings in which like parts are designated by like numerals throughout the several views the invention consists of a harness comprising a rear strap 1 and a forward strap'2. These straps are curved so that the rear strap passes around the hind legs of the animal whereas the front or forward strap 2 passes around the front legs as more clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. One end of each of these straps is connected by an adjustable strap 3 whereas the opposite ends are connected by a block and pulley arrangement 4: which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The adjustable straps as before described have been suspended from the body of the animal by suitable means and the object of the present invention is to novelly construct means for supporting the controlling device upon the back of the animal which is not liable to fall out of place and in which the various parts thereof may be easily attached to or detached from the other parts should they become worn or broken.
Secured to the extremities of the straps 1 and 2 are rings 5 and 6 respectively and adjustably secured to the rings 5 of the rearward strap is a back strap 7 which extends over the rear portion of the horse. A back band 8 extends over the back of the horse and is provided at its extremities with rings 9 which have adjustably secured thereto the belly band 10 of the harness. The central portion of the strap 7 is provided with a ring 11 which has extending therefrom a pair of diagonally extending adjustable straps 12 which are connected to the rings 9 secured to the extremities of the back band. A usual crupper 13 is detachably secured to the ring 11 by means of a snap hook formed on one extremity thereof.
Secured to the back band 8 is a strap 14- having extending therefrom adjustable straps 15 which are connected thereto by means of rings 16. The extremities of these straps 15 are provided with snap hooks for engaging with the rings 6 for supporting the extremities of the forward strap 2.
An adjustable strap 17 is secured at one end to one of the rings 9 and extends around the neck of the animal forming a yoke or collar of the harness 18, the opposite extremity of the said strap is detachably secured to a similarly extending strap 19 by means of a snap hook 20. Each of these straps 17 and 19 at a point of intersection 21 are provided with auxiliary straps thereby forming a connection which will hold the straps in position upon the back of the animal. A strap 22 connects the collar portion 18 of the harness with the central portion of the curved forward strap 2 thereby providing a means for holding the collar portion in place around the neck of the animal and also supporting the forward strap at a desired height. This strap 22 is provided at one end with a pulley 23 over which operates the collar strap 18 and its opposite end is connected to the forward strap 2 by means of a snap hook 24.
The block and pulley arrangement indicated generally by the numeral 4: is provided with blocks 25 in each of which are mounted a pair of rollers over which extend a rope or cable 26 one end of which is secured to one of the blocks 25 as at 27 and its opposite end is to be controlled by the operator. These blocks are also secured to the rings 5 and 6 respectively by means of snap hooks 28. From this arrangement it is apparent that I have constructed a fourin-one pulley which will give the operator at better advantage over the animal.
In operation this harness is placed over the back of the animal as shown in Fig. 1 and the curved straps 1 and 2 are dropped so as to extend over the front and rear legs of the animal and the various portions of the harness are adjusted to prevent the same from slipping olf the back of the animal. Should the animal start to kick or run the operator will be able to shacklethe legs by pulling the rope 28, thus retaining the ammal in his custody. It will thus be observedthat by means of the said device as described the most vicious and unruly animal can be easily controlled and by means of the adjustable features the harness maybe made to fit different sized animals and should any one of the various parts thereof become worn or broken new ones may be readily substituted in their place.
It is obvious from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the harness as before described will be inexpensive in the cost of manufacture, strong, durable and eflicient when in use and by the use of the back band as described it will prevent the harness from being displaced from the animal during the kicking and running of the horse.
What I claim is 1. In a horse controlling device, front and rear curved straps adapted to limit the action of the limbs of the horse, means for adjustably connecting the extremities of said straps, a back band, means for connecting the extremities of said front curved strap with said back band, rings formed in the ing the neck portion of said first mentioned adjustable strap with one of said curved' straps substantially as described.
2. In a horse controlling device, a pair of curved straps adapted to limit the action of the limbs of the horse, means for adjustablyf connecting the extremities of said straps, a back band, rings formed in the extremities of said back band, means connecting said rings for securing said back band upon the horse, a strap secured upon said back band, rings secured in the extremities of said strap, adjustable straps connecting said last mentioned rings with the extremlties of the forward curved strap, an adjustable strap connecting the extremities of the rearward curved strap and adapted to extend over the back of the horse, diagonally extending straps connecting the said last mentioned strap with the rings formed upon the said back band, a second adjustable strap secured at its extremities to the rings formed upon said back band, the medial portion of said last mentioned strap adapted to form a loop and extend around the neck of the animal,
means for adjustably connecting themedial portion of the said last mentioned strap ;with the medial portion of the forward curved strap, substantially as and for the purpose described.
