Description

To all whom it may concern i new as new aai Nansen-fife. JWHIPPCLE, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
- Letters Patent No. 104,520, dated June 21, 1870.
Trmnovsmnm IN; ewe oncnmsnn The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the items Be itknown that I, NELSON S. Wmrrm, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and Stateof Michigan,
have invented a new and useful I'mprovem ent in Glue; and I do hereby declarelthat the following is a full, ;clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto make and use'the same.
My invention has rams object to furnish-an improved glue for use upon wood, crockery, glass, marble, leather, metals, 850., which shall be simple in preparation, andwill hold the parts to which it may be applied firmlyin-place, and which shall. have a much greater adhesive power than any glue heretofore made; and l 1 It consists in the gluefcomposed of the ingredients and prepared in the mauner hereinafter more 'fully described.
In preparing this glue, I first dissolve five (5) pounds of common glue in one (1): quart of alcohol, and stir in one and a half 1%) pound of dry pulverized white or red lead. To this 'Iadd one (1) quart. of milk-curd prepared in the same manner as for making cheese, stirred nplfine, and stirred intothe mixture. Ithen add three-fourths (i). of a pound of gum-shellac cut in alcohol, and onell) pound of dry slaked lime. The a mixture is thoroughly stirred, and is ready fornse. The proportional quantities of the above ingredients may be'vaiied within reasonable limits without afi'cet ing the quality of the glue.
By mixing the above ingredients without water or alcohol, and grinding or pulverizing them, and afterwards drying out the moisture imparted by the curd, a dry or flour glue will be produced. l As thus prepared, the glue must be dissolved in alcohol, enough alcohol being used to reduce it to the a proper consistency for use.
V As thus prepared, the glue is wafer-proof.
This enables me to prepare the glue and put it into market in the form of a paste, or of a flour, as may be desired, or as the requirements of the trade may demand- It should be observed that this glue becomes wholly water-proof by using alcohol alone in its'preparation, as the dissolving liquid.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved glue prepared of the ingredients, and 1 in the manner substantially as herein set forth and described.
'The'above specification of my invention signed by me this 16th day of May, 1870.
Witnesses: NELSON S. WHIPPLE.

James T. GRAHAM.
