State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain Rods and Brackets, of which the following is -a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to curtain supports, and particularly to a cooperating rod and bracket construction therefor- In its broad aspect, it contemplates the use of a wallbracket slotted to receive the end of the curtain rod and carrying a keeper adapted to maintain the end of the rod in engagement with the bracket.

The preferable embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a curtain rod and its brackets, constructed in accordanee with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig.

As .the construction of each'of the brackets and rod tips is the same, a description of one in detail will suiiice for both. The face plate of the bracket is formed with a keyhole slot 5, the material of the face plate being punched out to form this slot and be ing bent backwardly and rearwardly from the slotted portion to form a spring tongue or keeper 6, the lower end of which is provided with a locking protuberance 7 the function of which will appear hereafter. The rod tip 2 adjacent its end is provided with an annular recess 8 of sufficient depth to make the diameter of the tip at this point less than the width of the narrowed portion of the key-hole slot 5. This, therefore, provides the tip end with two annular abutment shoulders 9 and 10. The end of the tip is apertured as at 9, this aperture being preferably 'ofa diameter approximating that of the protuberance 7 at the end of .the spring keeper 6,. With this construction of the parts in mind, the cooperating use of the rods and brackets will be seen to be as follows: Assuming that the telescopic rods and their brackets have been adjusted to the desired width of curtain, the brackets are' then secured to the wall molding or other suitable support by means of the screws shown, their side flanges or walls 4 spacing theface plates from the wall and allowing suflicient free play on the part of the spring keeper 6. The ends of the rods are then positioned to bring their tips in alinement with and through the upper enlarged end of the key-holeaslots 5. The operator then moves the ends of the rods "inwardly against the pressure of the spring keepers 6 and moves them downwardly to bring the anuular recesses 8 in linewith the edges of the face plate adjacent the narrowed portion of the slot. This will cause-the annular shoulders 9-10 on either side of the recesses 8 to abut against the interior and exterior of the face plates of the brackets, and when the rod ends have been brought to the lower extremnular shoulders 10 abutting against the exterior of the face plates will prevent inward movement of the ends of the rods, these two shoulders, therefore, cooperating to afford a firm support for the curtain rod hanging mounted thereon.

It will be noted that I have formed the brackets from a single piece of sheet metal,

' the key-hole slots of.their brackets, the inner faces of the rod tips riding over these end protuberances and moving the spring keepers rearwardly to permit the withdrawal of the curtain rods from the brackets.

While I have described and shown herein 'a specific embodiment .of the invention, I desireit understood that various modifications in the structure thereof are possible within the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.

WhatI claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In. a device of the characterdescribed, in combination, a wall bracket having a face plate spaced from thewall and provided with a slot therein, a spring keeper carried by said bracket in rear of said slot, and a curtain rod having its end adapted to be inserted throu h said slot to engage and be det-achably interlocked with saidkeeper.

2. In a device of the character described, in combination, a wall'brackethaving. a face plate spaced from the wall and provided with a key-hole slot therein intermediate its edges, a spring keeper carried by said bracket in rear of said slot, and a curtain rod having a shouldered end adapted to be inserted through said slot to engage said spring keeper and be held thereby with its shoulder in engagement with said bracket.

, 3. In a device of the character described, in combination, a wall bracket spaced from the wall and having a slot therein, a curtain rod having a shouldered abutment end adapted to be inserted within said bracket slot and to abut against said bracket, and a spring keeper carried within said bracket in alinement with said slot, said keeper being provided with a protuberance and said abutment end being provided with an aperture adapted to be engaged by said protuberance whereby said abutment end is detachably locked in engagement with said bracket.

4;. In a device of the character described, in combination, a wall bracket having a face plate spaced from the wall and provided with a key-hole slot therein, a spring keeper and the carried by said bracket in rear of said slot, and a curtain rod having a shouldered end adapted to be inserted through said slot to engage said spring keeper and be held thereby with its shoulder in engagement with said bracket and with its end detachably ins terlocked with said keeper.

5; In a device of the character described, in combinatioma wall bracket comprising a face plate and side flanges adapted to engage the wall and space said face plate therefrom, a key-hole slot in said face plate, a

curtain rod having a shouldered abutmentend adapted to be inserted through said .keyhole slot, and a spring keeper carried within said bracket and in alinement with said slot and positioned to engage said abutment end to maintain it in engagement'with said face plate, said abutment end being apertured and said keeper plate being provided with an alined protuberance adapted to seat in said abutment aperture and detachably lock said abutment end in engagement with said bracket.

6. In a device of the character described,

in combination, a wall bracket comprising a face plate and sideflanges adapted to engage the wall and space said face plate therefrom, a key-hole slot in said face plate, a curtain rod end having an annular recess therein and adapted to be inserted through said bracket slot with its annular recessed portion between the narrowed walls'thereof and with the faces of the rod end adjacent said recessed portion abutting the exterior and interior of the face plate of said bracket, anda spring keeper carried by said bracket within said face plate and-in alinement with said slot and positioned to engafge said rod end and maintain it in engagement with the face plate of said bracket.

7. In a device of'the character described, in combination, a wall bracket comprising a face plate and side flanges adapted to engage the wall and space said face plate therefrom, a key-hole slot in said face plate, a curtain rod end having an annular recess therein and adapted to be inserted through said bracket slot with itsannular recessed portion between the narrowed walls thereof and with the faces of the rod end adjacent said recessed portion abutting the exterior and interior of the faceplate of said bracket,

and a spring keeper carried by said bracket within said face plate and in alinementlwith said slot and positioned to engage said rod end,said spring keeper being provided with a protuberance and said rod end with an alined aperture whereby said rod is maintained in engagement with the face plate of said bracket and is detachably locked in such po sition.

8.
