Be it known that I, CLEMENT A. HOL- mzoox, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Suspension or Chatelaine Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The present invention has reference, generally, to a novel construction of safety suspension or chatelaine-pin for retaining a watch or other articles in a suspended position upon part of a garment, such as a ladys dress, belt, or the like; and, the invention has for its principal object a simple and cheaply constructed suspension or chatelaine-pin from which a watch or other article may be suspended and securely held in its suspended position without danger of accidental displacement or theft.

This invention has for another object to provide a novel and simply constructed safety-suspension device, known in the art'as a chatelaine-pin, comprising a main ornamental body having a twisted and downwardly extending watch-bow receiving element forming a part of said body, and parts of said body being the respective end-portions of the said receiving element, the said main body, being provided upon the back near one end with a hinged pin and near the other end with a holding catch with which the pointed end-portion of the pin can be brought in separable holding engagement, all arranged so that when the pin is detached from the holding catch, a watch-bow can be inserted over the end of the main body of the device and made to enter the receiving element, whereby upon securing the free or pointed end-portion of the pin in the holding catch, the watch is suspended from the suspension device and can not be removed unless the pin is detached fromthe holding or retaining catch.

A further object of this invention is to provide a safety suspension or chatelaine-pin which, while it holds a watch or other article securely against accidental displacement or theft, does not require the operation of any independent or complicated locking or retaining means, but one in which the mere act of pinning the suspension or chatelainepin with the watch or other article suspendedtherefrom to the dress or garment causes the watch or other article to be securely locked or retained in its suspended relation to the said suspension or chatelainepin, and impossible of removal therefrom except by removing the said suspension or chatelaine-pin from the garment.

A still further object of the present invention is to provide a construction of safety suspension or chatelaine-pin, which lends itself readily to, a great variety of ornamental configurations or designs, while still retaining its safety locking features.

The invention therefore consists in the novel construction of safety suspension or chatelaine-pin hereinafter fully described; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be more particularly set forth in the follow' ing specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and form an essential part of this specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face-view of the safety-suspension or chatelaine-pin embodying the principles of the present invention, the same being illustrated pinned to the cloth of a garment with a watch suspended therefrom inits locked or secured relation thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, removed from the garment. Fig. 3 is a top View of the same, illustrating the manner in which the said safety suspension or chatelaine-pin is pinned to the garment, the cloth of the garment being shown in section and the watch being removed in this view, to better show the construction of said safety-suspension or chatelaine-pin. Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the complete safety suspension or chatelaine-pin embody ing the principles of my present invention, the same comprising, essentially, a main body-portion or bar 2; the free ends 3 of said main body portion or bar 2 may be embellished with any desirable design or configuration. Forming a part of said main body-portion or bar 2, and preferably centrally disposed between the ends 3 of the same is a suitably twisted and downwardly extending watch bow receiving element formed by portions 4 which are bent or turned so as to form a loop-portion 5 which is preferably at right angles, or approximately, to the longitudinal line of the main body-portion or bar 2, thus forming a receiving element or loop from which a watch 6, or other article, may be suspended by slipping the bow 7 of said watch over one of the ends of said main-body portion or bar 2 and sliding the same forward until it slips through the opening 8 between the downwardly extending portions 4 and finally rests suspended upon the loop-portion 5. Secured to one end 3 of said main body-portion or bar 2, and on the back thereof, by means of solder, or any other suitable fastening means, are a pair of perforated ears 9. Pivotally secured between the said perforated ears 9, by means of a rivet 9 is the joint-end 10 of a pin-shank 11, the free-end 12 of which is sharpened or pointed in the usual manner. In like manner, there is secured to the opposite end 3 of said main body-portion or bar 2, on the back thereof, by means of solder or any other suitable fastening means, a holding or retaining catch 13 of the usual hookshaped construction with which the pointed end-portion of the pin 11 can be brought into separable holding engagement. To arrange the watch-bow in its suspended relation within the watch-bow receiving element, the pointed end-portion of the pin 11 is disengaged from said holding or retaining catch 13, and the watch-bow is passed over the free end-portion of the main body or bar 2, and slides forward upon said body or bar until it enters the receiving element and is suspended therein from the loop-portion 5.

After the watch or other article has been slipped into the loop-portion 5, as above described, the pin-shank 11 is passed through the cloth 14 of the garment to which the said suspension or chatelaine-pin is to be attached, and the pointed end-portion of the pin-shank 11 is caught beneath and secured by the holding or retaining catch 13 in the usual manner. It will then be readily understood, that the Watch or other article is then securely locked or held in its relation to the said safety suspension or chatelaine pin against any accidental dis placement or theft; and, that the same cannot be removed except by releasing the pinshank 11 from its hold-ing engagement with the catch 13, so that the Watch or other article may he slipped over the end 3 of the said main-body-portion or bar 2.

It will thus be clearly evident that the present invention provides a very simple but efl'ective construction of suspension or chatelaine-pins for securely suspending a watch or other article from a garment or the like, the end-members of the device being both curved, so that the inner end-portion of the one end member extends inwardly and the inner end-portion of the other end-member extends outwardly and that the lower portion of the bow-receiving element is angularly disposed with relation to the said curved end-members. By means of this detailed arrangement of these parts, it is necessary, in placing the watch in'its suspended relation, to bring the bow of the watch in variously twisted relations with the general plane of the face of the suspension device, so that even when the pin' becomes detached, by accident, or otherwise, from the pin-receiving catch, it is with difficulty that the watch-bow can be removed; and, hence, any danger of losing the watch by accident or theft is minimized.

I claim A safety suspension device for suspending watches or other articles from a garment comprising a main body consisting of a pair of end-members, and an intermediately disposed and downwardly extending bow-receiving element, said receiving element forming a part of said body and lying in a plane at right angles to the plane of said body, and said bow-receiving element extending for some distance beneath the respective end-portions of said main body, and said end members being both curved, so that the inner end-portion of one end-member extends inwardly, and the inner end-portion of the other end-member extends outwardly, and that the lower portion of said bow-receiving element connecting the same is angularly disposed with relation to said curved end-members, all arranged so that the bow of the article may be inserted directly over one end of said body and moved upon a portion of said body directly within said receiving element, a pin pivotally connected to one end of the back of the said body, and In testimony, that I claim the invention a pin-receiving retaining catch at the other set forth above I have hereunto set my end of the back of said body, said pin when hand this nineteenth day of September 1908.
