Be it known that I, ALLAN J. BEATON, a
, citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe rolls such as are used for supporting piping in overhead heating systems and the objects of my improvements are to produce a pipe roll that combines the qualities of lightness and strength, and is made of parts stamped and shaped from sheet metal and is suitable for replacing rolls that are at present in use and made of cast material.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plurality of my improved pipe rolls in use and part of a system of piping supported thereby. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of one of my pipe rolls on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 4: is a plan view of the blank. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the shell members. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of one of the ferrules. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the same on the line 1) o of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is an elevation of the other end from that shown in Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is a sectional View on the line 00 m of Fig. 3.
A is my improved pipe roll and comprises a spool shaped structure conforming in general outline to that of the cast rolls that it is designed toreplace, having a pair of laterally disposed heads B connected by a central sleeve C, and is pierced axially by a bore 10 that is suitable to admit the supporting rod D.
The side walls of the headsB and the sleeve C merge into one another to form a con cave or U shaped bed that is suitable for receiving and supporting the pipe E.
My pipe roll A -is formed of a pair of similar blanks F of sheet metal that are out of the form shown in Fig. 4 and shaped so that a pair of mating parts F will form the spool shaped structure described and they are provided at the lateral ends with extensions 11 that combine to form a lateral neck G at each end suitable to receive and to be held together by a ferrule II that is forced thereon. Accordingly, the pipe roll A comprises a hollow shell like structure formed of a pair of substantially semi-cylindrical shell members or parts F, and the shell members F are provided at their ends with neck elements 11 in the form of extensions of the shell bodythat combine to form the necks G and the ferrules H forced over the necks G serve as the means for securing together the semi-cylindrical members F.
The shell members F meet along an axial plane, having their edges 12 in abutment, and by: a suitable shaping of the neck G and the ferrules H a drawing effect will be pro duced that will operate to force the said edges together so as to produce a close union so that under normal conditions of usage the completed roll will operate substantially as an integral, unitary structure.
The ferrule H is an annular structure or ring comprising a cylindrical body portion 13 that engages with the neck elements 11 in the manner described and I prefer to provide the same on the outer end with an in wardly directed circular flange 14 suitable for covering the outer end of the said neck elements 11 and provided with a central bore 15 that is a fit for the supporting rod D. The inner wall 16 of the flange 14 serves as a bearing in engagement with the supporting rod D and furthermore, serves as a finish for the end of the roll A. The inner wall of the neck G may or may not fit the said rod D.
My pipe roll as described is made in a simple manner, combines lightness and strength, and is serviceable in cases where cast rolls have previously been used.
It is apparent that some changes from the specific construction herein disclosed may be made and therefore I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form of construction shown and described, but desire the liberty to make such changes, in working my invention, as may fairly come within the spirit and scope of 2. A pipe roll having a body portion formed of two similar mating parts ofsheet metal having edges in' abutment along an axial plane, and comprising a pair of 1aterally disposed heads connected by a central neck, the said heads and neck being integral axially and shapedand merged into one an other suitably to form a bed for supporting a pipe, and means provided at the ends of 1 the said parts for securing the said parts together, and the said means comprising extensions on the said mating parts and. ferrules engaged withv the same and the said ferrules provided with overhangingflanges at the outer end which serve as a finish and as bearings for the said roll.
