To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VInorL T. YARBoR- open, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ludowici, in the county of Liberty and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireplace Fenders and Screens, of which thefollowing is a specification.

This invention relates to fire place screens and fenders, and pertains especially to a double fender and screen and means for supporting the same on fire irons of special construction.

The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in fire place fenders and screens, and to furnish novel and peculiar means for attaching and applying the same to andirons.

A further object of the invention is to provide a special bracket adjustably attachable to andirons and having such construction as to afford means for removably holding a grate fender and a screen perpendicular to such irons.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a combination fender, screen. and andirons with such novel and peculiar means for adjusting the same as will afford expeditious manipulation of the parts in various adjustments thereof, and in assembling and separating them, or for replacing any part or parts thereof which may become impaired or broken.

Various other objects, advantages and improved results will be found in the practical application of the invention.

1n carrying out my invention, I employ andirons, the supporting arm 1, of which is secured to the legs 2, by a screw-stem 3 and nut 41, which secures the andiron post 5 in posit-ion, so that these parts may be disconnected and assembled by simply operating the nut. I

' A device for holding and supporting a fender is clamped to the andiron arm 1, adjacent to the front end thereof, by means of ;bolts 6 and nuts'7, and such device comprises a bottom'block 8 for engaging'the under side or face of the arm 1, and having grooves 9 for holding the connecting rods 10 of the andirons; the block 8 has lateral projections 11 provided with a slot 12 for the bolts 6, and an opening 13 is made through the base of the block on each side of the said projections; the top portion of the device is preferably T-shaped, the stem 14 of which has notches 15, and the cross head 16 engages the top face of the arm 1 and is provided on each side of the stem with a pair of slots 17, one slot of each pair having the bolts 6 extending therethrough for clamping the said device to the arm 1. It is obvious that said clamping device may be adjusted, placed, and removed, relative to the arm 1, by operating the nuts 7 and their bolts.

A fender composed of two parts adjust able lengthwise by means of bolt holes 18 and bolts 19, extending through horizontal top bars 20 and 21, which overlap each other, is provided with depending fender arms 22. The outer end of each of the bars 20 and 21 is provided with a pair of vertical standards 23, projecting above and below said bars, and said standards are provided with a plurality of cross bars or pieces 24, certain of which are'intervened by the bars-20 and 21.

The fender is supported from the andirons by placing the bars 20 and 21 in certain of the notches of the T-stems let, so that certain of the fender arms 22 project through the clamping device slots 17 and openings 13, and said device holds the fender in vertical position. Vertical adjustment of the fender may be made by changing the top bars of the fender into the other stem notches. It will be seen that the fender may be readily removed and replaced, relative to the andirons by merely raising and lowering the fender.

The screen is composed of two sections 25 and 26, which are adjust-ably held together by means of clamps 27, so as to permit the said sections to be slid one upon the other for lengthening and shortening the screen. Each screen section is provided with a screen wing 28, projecting at an angle from the outer end of the sections and adapted to project into close relation with the outer sides of the fireplace. The screen is sup ported from the fenderby means of a pair of hangers 29, each of which is composed of a single rod 30 having coiled eyes 31 slidable on the screen sections so as to vary the distance between the hangers according to the lengthwise adjustment of the screen, or of the fender for fireplaces of various size. Or the hangers may be adjusted lengthwise the screen without adjusting the screen.

Both hangers being of the same shape, only one of them will be described in detail.

The rod is extended from the upper eye outwardly and downwardly to a bend 32, so as to form an inclined guide or fender in placing wood into the fire place, and the rod depends from the bend 32 vertically, and the end thereof is folded back upon itself at 33, and terminates in a hook 34. The rod projects at an incline from the lower coiled eye and'terminates in a hook 35.

It will be seen that-the height of the screen may be varied by hooking the screen hangers on such of the cross pieces of the fender standards according to the screen height desired; that the screen is therefore adjustable lengthwise and vertically; that such adjustments may be perfected without removing the screen from the fender; and that the fender and the screen may be adjusted together vertically and horizontally, or they may be given separate adjustment.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. The combination, with andirons, of a fender having top bars, end standards carried by and projecting above and below said bars and provided with cross bars, a device clamped to the andirons and having a notched stem engaged by the said top bars for supporting the fender, and a screen having hooks engaging the said cross bars for adjustably supporting the screen.

2. The combination, with andirons, and a fender having horizontal top bars from which depend fender arms, and screen-supporting standards at one end of the bars, of means for holding the fender comprising a vertical stem having notches engaged by the said bars, a stem-base having slots engaged by certain of said arms, a block having openings for such arms, and means for clamping said base and the block to the andirons.

3. The combination, with andirons, and a fender having horizontal top bars and de pending arms, of a clamping device for holding the fender, comprising a T-shaped portion having notches and slots for the fender, and a block portion having openings for the fender arms, and means for clamping the device to the andirons.

4. The combination, with andirons, a rod for connecting the andirons, and a fender having horizontal top bars and depending arms, of a clamping device for holding the rod and the fender in position, comprising a stem having notches engaged by said bars for suspending the fender, a stem head or base having slots for the fender arms and a block having openings for the fender arms and grooves for the said connecting rod, and means for securing the clamping device to the andirons.

5. The combination, with a fender having barred standards at the outer ends thereof, and means for supporting the fender on the andirons, of a screen, and screen hangers adjustable on and projecting from the screen and terminating in hooks adapted to engage the bars of the standards for adjustably supporting the screen.
