for; Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are detail elevations showing the positions of the cam member actuating roller for the side clamp with relation to the actuating roller for the end clamp; Fig. 9 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the eect of the successive actions of the clamping members upon the door frame during one complete operation of the machine; and Fig. 10 is a vertical section taken on the line l0-10 of Fig. 3.
The present invention is devised with a view to providing a simple, efficient and durable mechanism for facilitating the clamping together of the various sections of frame work such as is used in the construction of doors, windows and similar elements of building construction.
While we have illustrated in the accompanying drawings a machineV embodying such features of construction as will be hereinafter set forth employed for the joining of door frames, it will be understood that the various parts thereof mav be so arranged and relatively proportioned that the machine may be adapted to operation upon other frame structures. We also aim to provide a machine which will square the frame with absolute accuracy. The above ends are attained by means of the construction which will no-w be set forth in detail.
The frame-of the machine comprises the upwardly converging end bars 5 which are arranged in spaced relation upon each end of a base plate 6 and are rigidly secured thereto in any preferred manner. The upper ends of the rear vertical end bars 5 are forwardly inclined or angularly disposed as indicated at 5 and secured to the upper ends of the front bars, which, as shown are of considerably greater width than the rear bars for a purpose which will be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
To the lower ends of the front end bars 5 of the frame a horizontally disposed supporting bar 7 is secured and one end thereof is angularly disposed and upwardly eX- tended in parallel relation to the frame bar 5 to provide the stationary end clamp 8. The other end of the supporting bar 7 eX- tends a considerable distance beyond the end of the frame and has arranged thereon the movable end clamp 9. The bar 7 is provided upon its upper edge with a flange 7 beneath which the retaining plates or clips 10 which are secured to the clamp 9 engage. This end clamp consists of the horizontally disposed body plate 11 to one end of which the clamping bar 12 is rigidly secured. The stationary clamp 8 and the bar 12 are provided upon their inner faces with the projecting blocks 13 which are adapted to engage upon the edges of the end sections of the frame between the longitudinal or side sections thereof as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. A horizontally extending bar 14 is fixed at one end to the frame and a rectangular sleeve 15 carried by the body plate 11 of the clamp 9 is slidably engaged thereon.
The front vertically inclined end bars 5 of the frame are connected and braced by means of the members 16 and upon these inclined frame bars the side clamping bar 17 is vertically movable. This bar is hung or suspended from a horizontal beam 18 which also bears and is movable upon the inclined frame bars rIhe clamping member 17 is adjustably connected to the beam 18 by means of the rods 19 which are thread ed in sleeves 2O secured to said beam. The lower ends of the rods 19 are rotatably mounted in the plates 21 by means of which they are connected to the member 17. Said rods have the miter gears 22 fixed upon their lower ends. A longitudinal shaft 23 is supported in the bearing plates 24 in parallel relation to the bar or member 17 and this shaft has fixed upon its ends the gears 25 which mesh with the gears 22. A short shaft 26 is also mounted upon one end of the bar 17 in the bearing plates 27 and carries a gear 28 to mesh with the gear 22 of one of the rods 19, said gear 28 being disposed upon the opposite side of said rod with relation to the gear on the shaft 23. A crank handle 29 is fixed to the outer end of shaft 26. By this arrangement of parts it will be readily seen that the clamping bar 17 may be adjusted so that a door of any width may be positioned between said bar and the supporting plate 7. This adjustment is obtained by rotating shaft 26 whereby the rods 19 are rotated through the medium of the intermeshing gears or pinions and threaded through the sleeve 20. Means are also provided for adjusting the end clamp 9 upon the supporting bar7 and this means consists of a threaded rod or shaft 30 which is loosely mounted in a sup` port 31 fixed to the clamp 9. The inner end of this shaft has threaded engagement in the member 32 carried by the longitudinally disposed arm 34 of a cam member 33. The crank handle 29 is adapted to be attached to the end of the shaft 30 to rotate said shaft and move the end clamp 9 along the supporting bar 7. The cam member 33 is for the purpose of moving the end clamp 9 into and out of clamping engagement with the end of the door frame and similar cam members 35 are also provided for moving the side clamping bar 17 in a vertical plane.
The manner in which these clamping members are actuated through the medium of the cam members 33 and 35 is substantially as follows. A countershaft 36 is arranged at the rear and to one side of the main frame and is mounted in a bearing 37 which is braced and supported from the main frame by means of the bar 38. A drive pulley and clutch are fitted upon the countershaft, and this pulley is connected by means of an endless driving belt 39 to the band wheel 40 fixed upon the end of a shaft 41 mounted in suitable bearings upon a supporting plate 42 secured to one end of the main frame. It will be understood that the countershaft may be driven by means of a motor or from any other suitable source of power. Upon the shaft 41 a pinion 43 is fixed and meshes with a large gear wheel 44 secured upon a shaft 45 mounted in bearings arranged upon the upper ends of the rear frame bars 5. This shaft also carries power transmitting gears or pinions 46 which mesh with the teeth of the gear wheels 47 fixed upon the opposite ends of a longitudinal shaft 48 which is mounted in bearings 49 formed upon the upper ends of the front frame bars 5. The upper ends of these frame bars are connected by means of the horizontal bar 50 which is provided in its ends with guide openings to receive the upwardly extending arms 35 of the cam members 35. The downwardly extending arms 35a of these cam members are connected to reduced studs or extensions formed on the ends of the beam 18. It will be observed from reference to Fig. 1 that the cam members 35 are located adjacent to the outer faces of the gear wheels 47. Said cam members are of a general elliptical shape, the major axis thereof being disposed transversely of t-he machine. A pin 51 is eccentrically secured to each of the gears 47, being fixed in one of the arms or spokes thereof. Upon these pins rollers 52 are rotatably mounted and these rollers extend into the openings 53 in the cam members and move upon the walls thereof.
A yoke 54 is provided with bearings 54 upon its ends to receive the longitudinal shaft 48. This yoke is also provided with a central vertically disposed bearing 55 to receive the upper end of a perpendicular shaft 56. Upon the upper end of this latter shaft a beveled gear 57 is secured which meshes with a similar gear 58 fixed upon the shaft 48. The lower end of the perpendicular shaft 56 is journaled in the base plate 6 of the frame and a crank arm 59 Vis secured thereon, said arm being movable in the circular recess 60 provided in the upper face of the base plate 6. The free end of this arm carries a pin 61 upon which the roller 62 is loosely mounted, said roller being disposed within the opening 63 of the cam member 33 and movable upon the walls thereof. The cam member is further provided with an arm 64 which extends in an opposite direction to the arm 34 formed upon said cam member. These arms are movable in the guides 65 secured upon the base plate 6. A yoke arm 66 extends laterally from one of the guides 65 and in this arm the lo-wer end of the shaft 56 is rota tably mounted.
A longitudinal rod or bar 69 is fixed upon transverse brace bars connecting the end frame bars 5 and the shaft 56 is embraced by a U-shaped plate 7 O which is fixed at its ends to said bar. This plate surrounds the shaft 56 at a point intermediate of its ends and further serves to hold the shaft in its perpendicular position and relieve the parts of undue wear. The clutch shifting lever 71 is pivotally mounted upon one end of the bar 69.
The operation of the machine as thus far described will be understood upon reference to Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive. The sections of the door frame are provided with mortises and tenons in the yusual manner and in Diagram A of Fig. 9 I have shown the parts of the frame assembled in proper position to be joined. 1t will of course be understood that the mortises and tenons are provided with a coating of glue or other adhesive material. After the frame elements have thus been assembled, they are placed in the machine with one of the longitudinal members F resting upon the upper edge of the longitudinal supporting bar 7. The crank rollers 52 carried-by the gear wheels 47 are now in the posit-ion with relation to the wall of the opening in the cam members 35 as shown in Fig. 5 and the crank roller 62 is in the position shown in Fig. 7. In these positions of the rollers 52 and 62, the clamping members 9 and 17 are fully opened so that a door of the proper width and length in accordance with the adjustments which have been made to the clamping members, may be received upon the frame as shown in Fig. 1. Now when power is applied to the countershaft 36 and transmitted to shaft 4S through the medium of the gearing hereinbefore referred to. the perpendicular shaft 56 is also rotated and the crank arm on the lower end thereof moves the roller 62 upon the wall of the opening in the cam member 33 and when the same reaches the point designated 72, the clamping pressure of the movable clamp 9 upon the end of the door frame begins and the end members F of theframe are forced inwardly and are joined to the central longitudinal members F2 between which the panels of the door are to be set, to within about one-sixteenth of an inch of completion as shown in Diagram B of 9. Now when the crank roller 62 reaches the recess 73 in the wall of the cam opening and i moves int-o the same, the clamping operation upon the` ends of the frame is temporarily suspended during the time that the roller travels thro-ugh this space. The rollers 52 upon the gears 47 are just leaving the point designated SO on the wall of the opening in the cam members 35,- when the roller 62 enters the recess 73 in the cam member 33. When the crank rollers 52 reach the recesses 8l in cam members 35, the clamping bar 17 has been moved downwardly into engagement with the upper frame member F of the door and has partially clamped the longitudinal frame members to the transverse members F so that the door fame is now in the condition shown in Diagram B of Fig. 9. Simultaneously with the entrance of the rollers 52 in the recess Sl of cam members 35, the crank roller 62 leaves the recess 73 in cari member 33 and mounts the face of the cam opening 63 at the point 75 which is disposed out of the plane of the point 74rat the opposite end of said recess, or inwardly thereof. This relative disposition of the points 74E and 75 with relation to the arc described by the roller, in the present instance amounts to one-sixteenth of an inch, though it will be understood that this difference may be varied as desired.V
This inward extension of the cam wall on one side of the recess is maintained between the points 75 and 76 with relation to said wall on the oppo-site side of t-he recess bew tween the points 72 and 74 so that during the travel of the roller 62 between points 7 5 and 76, there is a further inward movement of the end clamping member 9 and the clamping of the end members of the door frame and the .central transverse member to the central longitudinal member F2 is completed as shown in Diagram C. Fig. 9. Immediately upon the completion of the inward movement of the end clamp, the rollers 52 are leaving the recesses 31 and mount the wall of the cam opening at the point which is disposed inwardly with relation to the point 83 at the opposite end of said recess in a similarinanner to the relative disposition of the points 74 and 75 of cam member 33. The movement of the rollers 52 upon the innermost port-ions of the cam wall opening between points 82 and 84- completes the downwardj movement of the clamping bar 17 so that the longitudinal frame members F are clamped tightly against the end and intermediate frame members l?" and the door frame is now in the condition shown in Diagram D of Fig.
`When the crank roller 62 is disposed in the end of the cam opening at the point 76, the movement of the clamping member 9 is reversed and pressure upon the ends of the door frame is removed, said clamping member remaining in an ineffective position until the crank roller reaches the point 77 at the opposite end of the cam opening when it again begins to move inwardly toward the end of the door frame. Then the rollers 52 carried by the gears 47 reach the point S5 in one end of the cam openings, pressure of the bar 17 upon the longitudinal frame members is released, said bar remaining in its open position until the rollers arrive at the point S6 at the opposite end of the cam members. In this manner one cycle of the operation is completed.
In order to overcome any resistance which might exist and to prevent the joints of the frame from opening when the clamping pressure is released, we provide a pair of au tomatic hammers which are indicated at 90. These hammers are mounted upon the beam 18 and are movable thereon upon the short vertical' guide rods 91. Additional vertical rods 92 are rigidly secured at their lower ends to the beam 1S and extend vertically through openings in the hammers 90. The upper ends of these rods are provided with the heads 93 between which and the upper.
surfaces of the hammers the heavy coil springs 94e are arranged. To the rear edges of the hammer blocks t-he upwardly extend ing arms 95 are secured, and said arms are provided upon theirl upper ends with shoul ders 9G to be engaged by the arms 97 rigidly fixed on the shaft 18. While the rollers 52 are moving between the points 83 and 841; of their respective cam members, the arms 97 are engaged with the upper ends of the arms 95 and are moving the same upwardly, thereby lifting the hammer blocks 90 and placing the coil springs 94 under tension. Then the rollers 52 reach the points 84, the hammers are released and the springs 9st force the same downwardly upon the upper edge of the beam 18 and deliver a heavy blow upon the ends of said beam which is transmitted through the rods 19 to the longitudinal clamping bar 17. The work is thus finally set up before the complete release of the clamping members.
From the foregoing it is thought that a complete understanding of the construction and manner of operation of our improved squaring and clamping machine can be obtained. The device is entirely automatic in its action and the clamping and squaring of the door frame is quickly and efficiently performed in a remarkably short space of time. Qrdinarily about 25 seconds will be consumed in the travel of the cam rollers 52 from the points 85 to 8G which will allow ample time for the work Vto be removed and replaced by a new piece. Owing to the fact that the clamping members are alternately engaged with the work instead of simultaneously as in the ordinary machine of this character, the action of one of said members will not counteract the clamping action of the other member so that a very tight oint is obtained. By our improved form of the cam members the relative opening and closing movement of the clamping members is properly timed and by providing means whereby these members may be readily adjusted, the machine is capable of operating upon door frames and similar work of various dimensions.
While we have shown and described the preferred form and construction ofthe various elements, it will be understood that our machine is susceptible of considerable modiiication in this respect without departing from the essential feature or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
