Description
To all whom it may concern ALBERI." L. y'Alvlnrn'ws or BRISTOL; CONNECTICUT.
Letters PatentNo. 104,404,.=dated .Tune 21,1870; cmtedated December 21, 1869.
IMPRovE'MnN-r IN Avena-BITS.
The Schedule' referred'to in these Letters Patent and making part f the same.
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. ANDREWS, of'Bristol, in the county. of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have Ainvented a new and Vuseful Improvernent in Angers and Bits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof',
reference being had to theaccompanying drawings l. making a part of this specification, inwhich` Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention.
" Figure 2,;a plan or vtop-.view 4of the detachable cuttingportion ofthe same.` 4Figure 3, an `end view ofthe Same.
Similar letters -of reference indicate like parts. `My invention relates to that class of angers and bits in which thecutting portion or head `can be rel moved when desired, and anew one substituted in its` place; and consists in the use or employmcntof a clovetailed tenen aud slot, running' transversely through the aiial line of the auger, and near its end. l
In the drawings my invention is shown as applied to the anger patented by `HJI. Love, November -7,
1865, but is also applicableuto other angers or bits.
AA` designates the twisted orpod-portion 'of the angers and y V B, the cutting-head. i l r f The endV of' thepod Ais cnt at right angles with its' i axis, which leaves a plane surface running transverel y with the same. l The upper `end ofthe cutting-head the same axial line.
the plane surface on the ends of the pod A and hc'adV B, as shown in fig. 2. i n Y The tenon c is withdrawn from andmserted in the slot a by giving a lateral motion to the head B, while the friction of ythe parts' of the dovetailed joint will be suicient to keep the pod A and head B on one and If desired, however, a small screw might be inserted. through the head B, so as to press against the pod Aat the dovetail joint, and thus further ,secure the head in place. r
By my invention I am enabled to construct an auger or bitwith a detachable .cutting-head, while I do not change the general form of the auger, so as to injure its working qualities, as has been the case with all previously-invented jointed angers.
Heads of dierent sizes can be adjusted to one pod,
thus reducing the costof a set of bits. Y l NewN/hcads can be attached when the cutting-lips are injured, at a much less cost than 'new bits can be made.
I do not claim making thecutting-head separate kfrom the pod, but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y,
A jointed auger or bit, in which the pod and head are connected to each other by means of asingle dovetail tenon and slot running transversely through thevaxial line of the auger, substantially as described.
ALBERT L. ANDREWS.'
