To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. CABLE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to bottle stoppers.
In an application filed by me on the 21st day of November, 1911, Serial No. 661,559, I described and claimed a bottle stopper comprising a retaining member adapted'to engage the neck of a bottle, and a gravity operated cover member supported thereby and adapted to move away from the bottle when the bottle is tilted for pouring, and adapted to drop back of its own weight in position to close the bottle when the bottle is brought around to its normal position.
The present invention relates to a modification of the broad idea claimed in said application, and the present invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a view of a water bottle partlyin section showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the bottle tilted; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved stopper removed from the bottle; and. Fig. at is a section on a line just above the inwardly extending finger.
In the drawings the numeral 2 designates a water-bottle of ordinary shape with the neck-portion 3. The retaining member 4 consists of the spring arms 5 which are curved to conform substantially to theinner walls of the bottle-neck, said arms being united by the ring 6 riveted or otherwise secured to said arm. The ring 6 has the inwardly extending finger 7 which is bent at its inner end to form the substantially ring shaped portion 8. The upper ends of the arms 4 are bent inwardly as at 9.
The cover or cap 10 is secured to the 11 per end of the rod 11, and said rod passes drawn through openin in the portions 9 of the arms 4., said r0 passing through the ring 8 in the finger 7. The lower end of the rod is bent to form the enlargement 12. The rod 11 is given a slight bend as at 13 to prevent said rod from passing down through the opening in the inwardly extending portions cover 10 finally rests upon the upper edge of the bottle. In this manner, the retainer is held securely within the neck of the bottle so that it cannot be dislodged therefrom by the tilting of the bottle or the discharge of contents therefrom. When it is desired to pour from the bottle, the bottle is tilted up in the ordinary manner and the cap 10 moves away from the upper edge of the bottle to permit the escape of the liquid, the distance which the cap moves away from the upper edge of the bottle being controlled by the distance of the enlargement 12 on the rod 11 from the ring 8. This distance that the cap moves away from the bottle may of course be regulated by the length of the rod 11 and the distance of the enlargement 12 from the ring 8. When the bottle is brought around to its normal position the cap will drop of its own weight into engagement with the upper edge of the bottle. In this way I provide a simple construction which will engage the bottle-neck in such a manner as to insure against its dislodgment during the pouring operation while at the same time I provide a clean, sanitary arrangement for water hottles which will exclude contamination from the atmosphere, and I am enabled to dispense with the handling of corks or stoppers which are liable to become contaminated and cause spread of contagion.
What I claim is:
1. A bottle-stopper comprising a retaining member having spring arms, a band uniting said arms, a projection on said band, arod longitudinally movable in said retaining member, a cover carried by the upper end of said rod, and an enlargement at the lower end of said rod adapted to engage said projection.
