Be it luier-vii that `l, Emmen V. BRIDGE, citizen ot the United. States, residing at Derry, iii the count-y of l/Vestmoreland and State oi ffennsylvanim have invented oer tain new and useful Iiiaprovemeots in Flexible Ladders, of which :de following is a specificaties.
This invention relates to improvements iii vilexible ladders more particularly to devices of this class iployed lire escape ladders, and has for one oi its objeets to irnprovev the construction and increase the eiliciency arid utility of devices of this obaracter.
Another object ost tbe invention is to provide a simply constructed device a lich may be increased in length Without material structural cliaiig'e exoept increasing tbe imm-- be invention is to provide a simply Constr d device Wliicli may be rolled into relativ y small spaee when not in `ese :tor transportation or storage, and readily and quickly arranged for use by any person without previous slzili or knowledge.
With these and other objects in view, t'ne inventioir. consists in certain novel features of coiistruetion asliereafter .shown and described, and their specifically pointed out. in the claires.
c o mi tof eorif'orm to the feature to which amelie ,.crally be constriieted 7 -l wv n suilicierit l glib from. the nii-lies window or root o e 'fio time windev? `Speeo'ation of Lettere latent.
The iirioroved device. 'may be construoted' The improved device comprises ilr general over the Cornice of a building, a 'Window sill, or like structure, a dexblemembcr such as a Wire cable depending from each hook and spaced apart to'correspond to the side members of an ordinary ladder, and a. plurality of rounds clamped to the cables at spaced intervals and adapted to be adjusted to i11- crease or decrease the distance apart of the rounds', each clamping device being, likewise provided with a spacer member to hold the ladder spaced from the, Wall against which the device is located. l
i'llie lioolrs above referred to, are repre-- sented atl and may be of any required form or size to correspond to the' building ably be provided with eyes`l 1l at one end to receive a cable-engaging loop '12. The cables are represented conventionally at 13, and are-connected at one end in the loops lf2. By this means the cables are iexibly united to tbe hooks and suspended there- -trom .v'lieii'in use, as shown.
The rounds of the improved ladder` are preie 'ably formed oi' gas piping and repre sented at ifi. preferably by threading, in sleeves l5 upon imi'er clamp plat-es 1, tbe latter being' provided on one face with an oblique cavity 17 to bear over the cables i3 at one side and with `guide ribs ldat its side edges. Bearing upon the. cable at the opposite side and likewise opposite to the plates 15, are other iiqaely channeled shown at 2O to bear over the cable and to fit between the ribs 18. The plates lil-i9 are coupled. by clamp Patented Nov., i2, M9212..

It will be noted that all Vof the parts are of metal, and will not therefore be a'eeted by the weather or by the heater smoke in event of a re.4 y
The members 13 bein flexible and the hooks 10 being swinging y coupled "to the cables, the whole device indy be rolled into a reltivelysinall'space for transportation or storage The improved device' is designed more particularly for use :is a tire escape, und when thus employed Will be deposited in the building adjacent to e windongand n event of e fire the hooks 10 are connected over the sill of a Window or otherwise suitably disposed, and 'the ladder periiiittedto be unrollcdnnd dropped to the ground outside the building. The ladder may tiiii's be quickly disposed in position for use.
The improved device is simple 'in con: struction,- can be inexpensively manufacintieme 1. A re escape ladder comprisingiexible side members having suspending meens'et vone end, co-:icting clamp devices engaging said sides at spaced intervals and having obliquely directed channels to receive the side membersmeans for forcibly uniting said clump members, n round connected to eachl opposite pair of clamp devices, and nwell engaging arm extending from each clamp device.
2. A re escape ladder comprising flexible side members having suspending means atone end, coiictiiig clamp devices engine;v ing seid sides at spaced intervals, one inem# bei" of said clamp devices having guard ribs to receive the other clamp members and with obliquely directed channels lto lreceive the sidemembers, means for forcibly unitingv said clamp members, and ii Wall engaging erin extending from eiicl'ik clamp device.4
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence oftivo Witnessesn i EDWARD v. BRiDGE; [risgg'' Witnesses JAMES L. Town, PRESTON F. BROWN.
