The bracket-s are secured to the sides of the font by means of bolts 23 and are curved i down below the inclined plane thereof. l
Line um't case (md typen-The line unit case C in which type are adapted to be set and'from which type are distributed consists of a pair of vertical sides 25 and 26.? evenly spaced apfrt and formed with ends 27 and 2S. The type such as 7 is set with its* shank 11 depending in the space between t-he sides with the opposite shoulders 6 resting on the upper edges 29 on said sides. y The sides of the line unit case are of spring l material so that they cap be spread slightly to permit the type being set thereinl and removed therefrom. After the line unit case is filled the type may be held or locked in the case in any ordinary manner such as by a set screw 30 and follower 31.
T ype setting-The line unit case carrier rB which is adapted to select type from the font and set them in a line unit case, and toremove the type one at a time`4 from the line 'unit case and place them in the proper channel in the font is in the form of a earriage 35 having two parallel sides 36 spaced evenly and suflicient-ly apart to receive freely an end of the line unit case C, said sides having upper parallel edges 37 sloping i i down from the delivery end S of the font the line unit case between the walls 36 ci,
the carriage. The walls 36 are also formed with inner over-hanging shoulders 43 (see Fig. 8) flush with the inner walls of the line unit case when said walls are spread to allow the type to drop freely between them or be easily removed. The line unit case .is held in the carriage and its walls are spread by means of a ball 4 4 playing in the opening 45 in the door 40 of the carriage and a spring leaf 46 secured to said carriage by the screw 47, with its free end pressing the ball upwardly between the lower chamfered edges 48 (see Fig. of the sides 25 and 26 of the .line unit case. The carriage 35 is mounted on a pair of sleeves 50 dis )osed on opposite sides thereof, said sleeves eing journaled upon the bushing 51 'which in turn is mounted upon a support 52 which is secured by screws 53 to the carriage. The entire'e'nd of the carriage is slidably secured to the body of the font by a gib rail {3a-secured by bolts 55 and servin to assist in guiding the carriage asit sli es on the shaft 20 and hold the inner end of the carriage in position longitudinally to register with the type channels in the font case. For the purpose of removing type from the channels in the font the carriage 35 is provided with a kick-off pin 6() working in a guide opening 61 in the carriage, the inner end of said pin being reduced in diameter and adapted to work in an opening G2 back of the stop pin 10 in the floor of the type channel with which the feeder registers, and push the lowermost type in the channel up and release it so that the type following will slip and eject it over the shoulders 5 and 10, thus causing it to slide down with its shoulders resting on the edges 37 of the sides 36 of the carriage.
The kicleoff pin and presser plate 6I. which carries guide pins 64 slides in the body 41 of the carriage. Coiled expansion springs 65 surrounding pins 64 serve to return the presser plate and retract the kiekc'l" pin into normal position in readiness to repeat its operation of ejecting a type.
lVht-n in normal position as illustrated in F'g. 3, the kicleoff pin does not enter the oltpning 62 in the loor of the type channel wi h which the carriage registers. A guard 66 in the form of au arm extends over the chauned to allow only one type at a time to be kicked olf. The arm is bifurcated at its lower end and its bifureatiom are secured wardly exteiulinzg,v ott-.set portion GS) which vallows the lower-most. type or slug to be pushed up and ont of engagement, with the.

The upper extremity oit the guard GG is shaped with an index pointer 7l extending` over the inde); t6 on the plate l2 of the font case and serves to indicate the character ol' type With which the carriage registers. To operate the kiek-ell1 pin 60 a-pair of bell crank levers 7 2 each having` two arms 73 and 74 is pivoted on'the bushing` 51. The work arms 73V are provided with an antitricticn roller 75 suitably journaled on a bolt 76 and bea-ring y"against theipresser plate G3. The freeend of the pair of Work ar1'ns74 olr said lever is connected by pivots 77 Working in 'slots 78 in the sides of a pair ot' operating levers 7 9 which are in turn pivoted between ltheir ends by a pin 8O upon the outerend of a pair of swinging links Sl. The free end of the pair of levers 79 is pro vided with ahandle 82 by which motion is imparted to the kick-oli1 pin (30. The swinging levers 7 9 are pivotallj,7 mounted upon the links 81 and. have their members disposed. on each side of the carriage. By pushing` the hand levers forward into the position illustrated in Fig. Ll from the position illustrated in Fig. 3 the swinging links 8l are first moved forward and when resistance becomes great enough the arms 74 and 7) buckle and the work end of the arms 73 of the pair of hell crank levers nieves up cai-r)r` ing with itI the presser plate G3, thus depressH ing` the springs (35,`p1isliing the kieieoti' piu G0 up and causing` the reduced end thereof to enter the opening G9, and impinge against the lower-most type in the channel until it is raised and released troni the channel over the shoulders 5 and l0. The entering ends 95 of the pins Q0 are conical .and pressure upon the pins causes the guide giioove between the sides 8G of the -line unit: ease carrier to register accurately with the channel ot the lont holding the desired type. Further movement of the hand lever thereupon causes the depression of the kicleotl' piusvhieh is permitted by the accurate registration ot the Carriage with the type channel to register with the opening (32. When the handle 82 is released the springs ,(3.3 and 93 return the feeder parts to norinal position and the springs 93 also withdraw the pins troni the recesses 9st. lt will be noted that the conical shaped recesses as illustrated in 7 are disposed so that each' depress-ien cen-ters in a type channel.

unit ease carrier into the tent is very .siinilar to the operation when type are released from the tout and set in the line unit case 4r.lo distribute type from a line unit: casi` into the channel of the font case with. which .successful operation of setting the type in the latter is inserted in the carriage 35 as illustrated in Fig. 12 and the type slide from the line unit case 0n their shoulders upon the edges 37 of the sides 36 of the carriage until the shoulders 6 on the lower-most type impinge against. the stops 97 upon the upper edges 37 at. the lower ends of the sides 36 and the lower end of the .lowermost shank 11 impinges against the stop 98 at the lower most end of the type channel formed by the sides 3G. The stops 97 and 98 are of equal height and correspond in height with that of the shoulders 6 on the type. These stops 97 and 98 do not in any way impair the the line unit case at the delivery end of the machine for in that position the type escape over these stops. The raised off-set portion l 69 of the guard 66 permits free movement i of the type upon Athe shoulders While itsl main portion prevents more than one type 'l at a time escaping. In order to release the lower-most type in the channel between the sides 36 of the type feeder an auxiliaryl kick-off pin 991s provided which plays in an opening 10() immediately adjacent a corl responding opening 61 in which the kickoff l pin works. The kick-off pin 99 is 'similar in shape to the pin 60 and is similarly attached to the presser plate 63. Its end 101 which is reduced in diameter is adapted to pass through an opening 102`in the line l unit case carrier and impinges against. the i lower end of the shank 11 of the lower-most type in the line unit case ycarrier and lifts the type from engagement with the stops 97 and 9S permitting it to slide over and the line unit case. carrier registers. Then the. kick-off pins (l0 and 99 are in raised po# siticn as illustrated in Fig. 12 the pin60 projects'through the opening 103 in the floor of the channel of the type font and the lower end of the type which is released lodges against the inner end of the pin 60 until the handle 82 is released into normal position. The lodging of the type on the pin G0 prevents more than one type entering the channel in the font. if for any reason l more than one type. is releascdfrom the line v unit case carrier at. a. time.` The pin 99g` performs a similar function at the delivery l end of the machine by preventing more than one type entering the line unit case a't a time and acting as a check to prevent mistakes being made'by the operator.
The cover plate 12 has its upper and lower; cnds spaced from the receiving and delivcrv l ends l5 and 9 ot' the font so thatI the guard G6 will elosrlg1 eo`-, ierate with the surface i of the font and the type to perform its functions as. above stated.
Opmanions-tto set type a line unit C is placed in the line unitcase carrier B Q as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The handle i 82 is grasped by hand and said carrier moved on the shaft 2O to register successively with the lower ends of the desired channels in the font A. according to the index 1.6 with whichthe pointer 71 coincides. viren the pointer coincides with an index mark indicating a type which it is desired to set in the line unit case the handle 82 is pressed forward. into the position indicated in Fig. 4t and released. This operation is repeated until the line unit case filled when it is removed and an empty case substituted. Each time the handle is pressed forward. the registering pins 90 and 91 enter. a pair of recesses 94 thus causing the guide groove between the sides 36 of the line unit case carrier to accurately register with the desired type channel in the font so that a released type will sliderdown into the line unit case without catching. During the forward movement of the handle 82 `and after the line unit case carrier B has registered the kickoff pin 60 which has also been made to accurately register with "the opening 62 enters the lower portion of the type channel and raises the lowerm0st type in the channel out of engagement with the stops 6 and 10 and the released type thereupon slides upon its shoulders down the. channel way in the line unit case carrier and into the line case. The handle 82 is then released which completes an opera.- tion.
To distribute type the shaft 20 is detached from the brackets 18 by removing the hpins 22 and adjusting the line unit case carrier B to the receiving end of the font. The ends of the. shaft are seated in the recesses 21 of the brackets 19 and the pins 22 80- cured to said brackets while the body 0f the line unit case carrier engages on the gib rail 95. A line unit case carrying type to be distributed in the font is adjusted to the line unit case carrier as illustrated in Fig. 1.2, the type slidin down automatically 'upon their shoulders w ich are guided upon the edges 37 of the sides 36, the lowcrmost type lodging against the stops 97 and 9B in position to be ejected by the kick-off.
The line unit case carrier is then movedl across the upper end of the font and when the pointer 71 coincides with a mark on the index 17 corresponding with the character of the lower-most type in the line unit case I carrier the handle 83 is pushed forward into l the position shown in Fig. 12. 'This operation first actuates the registering mechanism causing the line unit case carrier to register its channel accurately between the sides 36 with the desired channel in the font.. Complete inoven'xent of the handle Q2 as in the operation of setting t v |)es actuates the kicko'tt' mechanism and releases` the lower-most typo permitting it to travel flown the dcsircd channel in the font after the hanfllz,`
