To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. SPENCER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Punch-Presses, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to-a safety device for punch presses and other machines having dangerous parts.
The primary object of the invention is to provide eiiicient means to prevent injury to operators of machines, the unprotected use of which is hazardous to the person.
Another object is to automatically control the operation of aprotective device in accordance witha periodic or recurrent functionof the machine.
These with further objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the detailed description hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of my invention mounted on a punch press. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the protective device together with the presscontrolling mechanism by which it is actuated. Fig. 37- is a perspective view of a bracket for mounting the protective device on the frame of the machine.
In the drawings, numeral 5 indicates the frame of a punch press of well known constructionand operation, 6 and 7 are the stationary and reciprocable ooacting press members, respectively, and 8 is the controlling member bywhich the operator causes the press to act.
A gate or shield 9 is pivoted to the outer end 10' of an angular bracket 10, the inner end'lO of which is fixed to the said frame 5. The gate 9 has a gear member-12 fixed thereto concentric with the pivot 13 on which the gate turns. Levers l4 and 15 coact between the gear 12 and the control rod,
8 to govern the movement of the gate. The lever 14: is attached by pivot 16 to the outer or transversely bent portion of bracket 10 as at 17, and lever 15 issimilarly attached by pivot 18 to the inner portion of said bracket as at 19. One end of lever let is provided with a rack segment 20 arranged to coact with the said gear 12, and the other end coacts with lever 15 at a point adjacent the bend in the bracket. One end of lever 15 is longitudinally slotted to receive the control rod 8, adjustable collars 21 being at tached to the latter immediately above and below the lever. The adjacent ends of these levers are arranged to coast as by means of a longitudinal slot 22 in the end of lever 15 zontal position it gives the operator free access to the punch members 6 and 7 but when it is lowered, as when the part 7 is about to descend it is rotated downward to a vertical position in front of the said punch members.
The control rod 8 is pressed downward by foot power against the tension of the restoring spring 24 to cause the press to act, and through the said lever mechanism st multaneously to rotate the gate 9 downward H, the

It also prevents inserting the hand during the period of danger.
It is usual to provide punch presses and similar machines with clutches arranged to be thrown in by means such as the rod 8, and arranged to be thrown out automatically when the punch actuating shaft has completed one revolution. When used with such a machine, the gate or guard 9 assiunes the operative position before the n'iovable press element, as '7, descends, the guard being antomatically withdrawn by the spring as the clutch is thrown out.
Having thus described my intention, I claim:

2. The combination with a machine com-' prising a frame and an operating mechanism having a dangerous part; of a vertically disposed gate pivoted. to the front portion of said frame at a point abovesaid dangerous part and arranged to swing in a vertical plane from a position at one side of the operators hands to its operative positionin front of said dangerous part, and means for operating said gate.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame, a machine part supported thereby and having a cyclic opera-. tion, one phase of which is dangerous, a' vertically disposed protective gate pivoted at its upper edge to the front-of said frame at a point above said machine part, and mechanism cooperatively connecting said machine part and said gate, said mechanism rotating :the gate into operative position phase and holdsaid mechanism one pivoted on the reciprocatory member, comprising c'oacting levers, each branch of the said angular bracket, a pinion on said gate concentric with the said pivot, and a rack on the adjacent lever coacting therewith.
6. In a device of the class described, in combination; a bracket arranged for mounting on the frame of a machine, said bracket with the ends extending at an angle, a segmental gate memberhaving a gear wheel attached thereto at its apex, said wheel bein bracket, a "lever pivoted centrally to the bracket arm-adjacent said gate, said lever having a concave rack on its outer end arranged to engagethe farther side of said pinion, asecond lever pivoted centrally to the other or frame engaging arm of sai bracket with one end extending adjacent said frame, said levers having. coactive engaging means comprising a longitudinal pin on the end of one, lever and a corresponding longitudinal slot in the end of the other lever, said pin lying crosswise in said slot."
7 The combination with'a punch press of a vertically disposed gate pivoted at a point above the punch members; a pinion fixed to said gate concentrically with its pivot point; a pivoted lever; a toothed sector carried by said lever and meshing with said pinion; and an operative connection between t. 'Ihe'combination with a machine comoperative mechanism mounted thereon, a part of which is at times dangerous, a controller rod at the side of saidframe and arranged to start said mechanism and a spring arranged to restore said rod; of protective means comprising a gate pivoted to the front of said frame andarranged to swing down in frontof said machine part when the latter is in its dangerous position, a lever pivoted to the front of said frame with one end operatively engaging said gate, a second lever pivoted to the side of said frame with one end engaging said controller rod, the opposite ends of said levers operatively engaging each'other, said levers causing the gate to swin downward. when the said controller rod is depressed.
In a punch press in combination, a stationary main frame, a vertically recipro catory member operatively mounted on the front side of the frame, said frame and reciprocatory member being arrangedfor the mounting of coacting punch members thereon, means to control said reciprocatory member, an angular bracket attached to one side of said main frame and extending forward and across the front of said reciprocatory member, but out of contact therepress. 1

In a device of the class described, the combination ofazsupporting bracket; a gate pivoted thereto; a-pinion fixed to said'gate concentrically with its pivot; a lever pivoted on .said bracket; a rack carried by said lever and meshing with said pinion; and means to form a connection between said lever and a controlling member on. the machine. 4 i V 9.
