To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E, KEMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alpena, in the county of Alpena and State ofthe result desired, whereby to reduce cost of manufacture in the quantity of material, as well as in the necessary steps to form such material.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had part-icularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view with the improved device in elevation, illustrating the use of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lock.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, my improved lock l is made up preferably of a single length of material, as spring wire, formed to provide spaced parallel bearing sections 2 and 3, and an intermediate diagonally disposed connecting section 4. The free terminals of the bearing sections 2 and 3, which, as seen from Fig. 4, are oppositely disposed with relation to the device as a whole, are similarly formed, each being inwardly offset on a curved line to provide a grip section 5, and then projected outwardly in a plane at right angles to the bearing section, to provide what may be termed a locking finger 6. As thus formed, the improved lock is of substantially Z- form, having the free terminals of the respective arms of the Z extended beyond the planes of such arms and outwardly therefrom, the connection between the arms and such outwardly extending terminals being inwardly offset from the plane of the arms.
In use, the innermost pipe section of the stove pipe, as 7, is designed to fit within the usualopening 8 formed in the chimney 9, and said section 7 is formed in diametrically opposite portions with openings 10, which are so longitudinally spaced that when the section 7 is in place, the respective openings l0 are arranged slightly beyond the front and rear surfaces of the chimney wall formed with the opening 8. The section 7, before being placed in position, is provided with the improved lock, one of the fingers 6 being projected through the innermost opening l0 of the pipe section, and the entire lock arranged within the pipe section, substantially as shown in Fig. l, except that the relatively rear finger 6 is prevented from registering with its corresponding opening 10. The section 7 is then inserted in place, until the forward projecting finger 6 engages the frontsurface of the chimney, whereupon, by reaching the hand or an implement within the section 7, the rear finger 6 is moved laterally to register with the opening l0, and the inherent spring of the material forces the finger through said opening to provide a projection to resist the forward movement of the pipe section. The pipe section is thus locked in place, and may be conveniently released at any time by removing the rear finger 6 from the opening 10, and moving it laterally within the pipe section, to cause its free end to bear against the inner surface of the pipe. The rounded inwardly extending offset 5 facilitates such operation, by providing a convenient grasping point for the linger, or a loop for the insertion of a proper implement, as the case may be, the offset 5, adjacent the forwardly disposed finger 6, providing a similar function in connection with such forward finger.
It will be noted that the improved lock comprises a single length of wire, without doubled portions, is in eect of duplicate construction from each end of the diagonal connecting section, and thus may be used without regard to which end is first inserted in the section. The connecting section provides sufficient base for the spring of the arms, and yet presents the minimum of obstruction.
