ROBERT LESLIE MAPSON, OF'LA MESA, AND A LBERT C. WOLFE, OF NESTOR, CALIFORNIA.
GRAIN-ELEVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT LESLIE MAP- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of La Mesa, in the county of San Diego and State ofCalifornia, and ALBERT C. WOLFE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nestor,-in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Grain-Elevator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to grain elevators, and has for its object to provide a conveyer and elevator adapted to be disposed at a plurality of angles relatively to each other, by means of which grain may be conveyed from a plurality of positions to be fed into a threshing machine which remains stationary, there being means connected with the threshing machine adapted for driving the elevator and conveyer.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete description.
In this specification we will describe the preferred form of our invention, it being understood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of our invention as applied to the conveyer; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan showing the means for mounting the conveyer and the means for rotating the drum journaled therein; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a side view of Fig. 3 looking toward the right.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that an elevator 10 is provided, which extends nearly to the ground and which is adapted to convey the grain upwardly to the threshing machine. A conveyer 11 is pro vided, which is constructed with drums 12 over which is disposed the usual conveyer belt 13. The inner terminal of the conveyer 11 is disposed above the outer terminal of the elevator 10 so that the material carried by the conveyer 11 is dumped on the elevator to be lifted to the threshing machine, the elevator being constructed with the usual drums 14 and conveyer belt 15. Se-
cured to the frame of the elevator there is a beam 16, which is disposed above the outer terminal of the elevator. There is a recess 17 in the upper face of this beam 16 near its outer terminal, and over this recess 17 is disposed plate 18 having an orifice therein, which serves as a journal for the central vertical shaft 19, the lower terminal of this central vertical shaft 19 being spaced from the sides of the recess 17, and as the central vertical shaft 19 does not fit the orifice in the plate 18 tightly, there is some room for lateral play of this central vertical shaft.
The conveyer 11 has a plate 20, which projects outwardly, and which has an orifice in which is disposed the central vertical shaft 19, and the conveyer 11 also has a beam 21 having an orifice through which the central vertical shaft 19 is also disposed. Between the plate 20 and the beam 21 a casing 22 is disposed. This casing 22 has upper and lower members 23 in which there are orifices through which central vertical shaft 19 is disposed. A supporting plate 24 is provided, this supporting plate 24 having a flange 25, which is bolted to the beam 16, the supporting plate 24 also having a slot 26 in which is disposed a pin 27, the pin 27 be ing secured to a bearing support 28 mounted on the casing 22. This construction permits of the vertical movement of the casing 22 with the bearing mounted therecn, but prevents any lateral movement.
In a bearing 29 is journaled a horizontal shaft 30, this horizontal shaft 30 having a bevel gear 31, which meshes with a bevel gear 32 secured to the central vertical shaft 19. The central vertical shaft also has a bevel gear 33, which meshes with a bevel gear 34 on a shaft 35, which is journaled in bearings 36 mounted on blocks 37 secured to the obliquely disposed beams 38 and to the transverse beams 39, which form part of the upper frame of the inner terminalof the conveyer.
To the side of the conveyer are secured bearings 40 in which is journaled a shaft 41, this shaft 41 having a bevel gear 42, which meshes with the bevel gear 43 on the shaft 35,the shaft 41 also having a lower bevel gear 44, which meshes with a bevel gear 45, secured to a shaft 46 to which the drum 12 is also secured.
The inner end of the conveyer 11 has standards 47 at either side, and these standards 47 are connected near their upper terminals by transverse beams 39, these transverse beams 39 having secured to them longitudinally of the conveyer a central beam 48, the plate 20 being bolted to the central beam 48. To the top of the standards 47 farthest from the central vertical shaft 19 are se cured the obliquely disposed beams 38, said beams 38 converging toward the central vertical shaft 19 through an opening in which the vertical shaft is disposed. The shaft 30 is connected with the driying shaft 49 by a universal joint 50, the driving shaft 49 being connected with the threshing machine so that it may be driven thereby.
hen using our invention the shaft 49 is driven by the threshing machine, and it drives the shaft 80, which drives the central vertical shaft 19, which drives the shaft 35, which drives the shaft 41, which in turn drives the shaft 46 on which the drum 12 is mounted, the shaft 49 as stated being connected with the shaft 30 by a universal joint 50, and the other shafts being connected by a gearing and the conveyer belt 13 is mounted on the drum 12. When the mechanism just described is in operation, the conveyer belt is driven by the threshing machine and it carries the grain toward the outer end of the elevator, on which the grain is adapted to be lifted by the elevator into the threshing machine. When all the grain has been removed from both sides of the conveyer, its position may be readily changed without disturbing the threshing machine or the elevator, since it is only connected to the elevator by means of the beam 21 and the plate 20, which are mounted on the central vertical shaft 19. It is therefore possible to move the conveyer to a new position, as it readily swings with the central vertical shaft 19 as a pivot. No matter in what position the conveyer may be disposed from a position at right angles to the elevator at one side toa position at right angles to the elevator at the opposite side, the machinery for the mechanism for driving the drum 12 will be in operative position, and since there is some play for the central vertical shaft in the plate '19 with reference to the several members through which it is disposed, it is possible to adjust the conveyer on uneven ground with the plane of the bottom of the conveyer at various angles with reference to the beam 16. r
