To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. DoNLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Holders and Carriers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to collapsible goods holders and carriers.

The object of the invention is to provide an article of the kind referred to which by parts shall be more convenient and durable in use than holders and carriers of the same character as heretoforei made.

A further object of the invention is to provide a collapsible holder and carrier of such construction that either end thereof may be interchangeably used, with equal facility, both as the top and as the bottom of the article.

With these objects in view the invention resides in a collapsible holder and carrier having the generic and specific features of construction and arrangement of the parts substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.

One and the preferred form of the invention' is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the-carrier and holder, the parts being shown in the position assumed when in use, a portion of the side being broken away to disclose the interior of the receptacle; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the holder and carrierina collapsed position; and,Fig. 3 1s a perspective view of the locking and carrying means separated from the remainder of thedevice, shown with the parts in .a locked condition.

In this drawing I have illustrated my invention as consisting of a rectangular body having two of the sides 1, 1, broader than the other sides 2, 2, though as will be clear from an understanding of the invention the specific form of the carrier is immaterial. The material used in constructing the carrier may be pasteboard, canvas, wood or other material, being preferably pasteboard because of ease of manufacture and in order to involve little expense when discarded be cause of wear or breakage.

The carrier is preferably composed of one piece of material having depressions, cuts in four or less parts connected at the meeting edges by hinges composed of thin material or metal, or the like. For purposesof cheapness and uniformity of appearance I prefer howeverto make the receptacle of a single piece the ends of which after being grooved or otherwise formed at the meeting edges of the sides are joined. Each side of the receptacle has projecting from and preferably integral with it a flap 3, the ends of one or more of which flaps may be if desired cut away giving them a slightly tapered form to facilitate folding. The flaps are all so formed that when the carrier is in a collapsed condition they extend outward from the respective sides in order to prevent undue wear or breakingalong the point of folding, as would be the case where the flaps turned inward when collapsed, and therefore be given an abrupt bend at the point of folding, which, after a few operations, particularly if the preferred material, namely cardboard, be employed would result in either disfiguring the package or in entirely separating the flaps from the sides rendering the pac age more or less useless The interior of the package is preferably provided'with a series of intersecting cross .pieees attached to the respective sides and which form divisions for separating the contents of the holder. The cross pieces are preferably collapsible or folding in order to offer no resistance to the folding of the receptacle or of the putting the same into condition for use, and to occupy a small space between the sides when the receptacle is folded.

In placing the case in position for use the opposite sides thereof are brought to a position parallel. with each other, and the flaps are then folded inward to a position substantially at right-angles to the sides. Any suitable means for securing the flaps in this condition and for affording means for carrying the package may be employed. For instance, as herein shown, each of two opposite sides of thepackage isprovided near each end with an opening 4, the edges of which may if desired be protected or strengthened, for instance by placing eyelets in them. Extending from end to end of the sides provided with openings are wires, string, tape or the like 5 which extend along the inner face of the sides and outward through the openings and are provided at their ends with means, such as loops 6 for receiving the means which secure the wires or the like of opposite sidesto each other, extend inwardly over the folding flaps to hold them in place, and afio-rd means for grasping in carrying the package. Herein I have shown two bails, one attached to the wires or the like of each side and which are so formed as to interlock when folded across the flaps. The lock herein shown consists of a latch 7 which is pivotally attached to one of the bails and is of a length to receive and retain the cross piece 8 ofthe other bail. By placing the wires or the like 5, on the inner faces of the sides they are protected from injury or catching into adjacent articles', and the outer faces of the sides are left in condition to receive printed directions for the use of the carrier, for advertisements or other matter.

Inasmuch as the formation of each end of the carrier and the fastening means employed, are the same at each end of the carrier, it will be clear that either end may be.

used for either the top or the bottom of the carrier, and that the package may be re-' versed in use should one end become worn or disfigured.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I

1. A- collapsible holder and carrier'comprising a body having sides the meeting edges whereof are permanently and foldably connected, each side being provided with a flap adapted to be folded outwardly in line with the side to which it is attached and inwardly to a position substantially at right angles to the sides, wires or the like extending along the inner faces of opposite sides and out near the ends thereof, and detachable means for connecting the ends of the wires or the like.

2. A collapsible holder and carrier comprising a body having sides the meeting edges whereof are permanently and foldably connected, each side being formed with a flap adapted to be folded outwardly in line with the sides and inwardly substantially at right angles to the sides, opposite sides being provided near each end with o enings, wires or the like extendin alon t e inner faces of the sides and having thQII'BHdS extendin out throu h the openings, loops in the en s of the wlres or the like, bails attached to the loops, and means for connecting the bails.

3. A collapsible holder and carrier comprising a body having sides the meeting edges whereof are permanently and foldably connected, each side being provided with a flap adapted to be folded outwardly in line with the sides and inwardly substantially at right angles to thesides, opposite sides being provided near each end-with openings, wires or the like extending along the inner faces of the sides and having their ends extending through the openings, a bail having its ends connected to the respective wires of each side, and a latch for connecting the bails.

4. Acollapsible holder and carrier comprising a body having sides the meeting edges whereof are permanently and foldably connected, each side being provided at each end with a flap adapted to be folded outwardly in line with the side to which it is attached and inwardly to a position substantially at right an les to the sides, two oppositely disposed si es having openings at each end adjacent to the flaps, wires or the like extending along the faces of opposite sides and passing through the openings, and detachable means for connectlng wires or the like at both ends of the sides.
