.Be it known that 'I, ARTHUR 'M. WIGHT, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.

My invention relates to boxes or crates, and more particularly to folding boxes such as are used for shipping purposes. Its object is. to provide a shipping box which is cheap to manufacture, which will effectively resist both the internal and external pressure to which such boxes are subjected in use, and which may be quickly and easily assembled or reduced to its folding or knockdown form.

One feature of my invention relates to the' means by which the cover of the box is secured in place, and consists in providing the opposite ends of the box with flanges, preferably overhanging, inwardly extending flanges, one of said flanges being adapted to receive beneath the same one end of the cover and theother flange being adapted to receive beneath the same a key which extends transversely across the end. of the box and overlaps the corresponding end of the cover. The top and bottom portions of the box are preferably similarly constructed, the covers for the bottom and top of the box being interchangeable, and hence either may be considered as the top or the bottom cover of the box, according to which is uppermost. Another feature of my invention relates to the means whereby the several portions of the box intermediate the ends are prevented from bulging outwardly by the pressure exerted upon the interior ofthe box. This feature of my invention consists in roviding the sides of the box intermediate 1ts ends with transverse vertical cleats which project beyond the edges of said sides, and in securing upon the cover longitudinally extendin blocks abuttin said extending ends of t e cleats, said 0 eats and blocks being thereby adapted to be secured together by nails or other fastening means. 4, 4 t0 the inner faces of which are secured, at the top and bottom of the stiles, the bars or rails 5 and 6. The stiles 4 project at their ends beyond the top and bottom edges of the s des A, in order that the rails 5 and 6 may lie above or below, as the case may be, said top and bottom edges of the sides A. The rails 5 thus form overhanging, inwardlv projecting flanges at the ends of the top and .ottom of the box.

The rails 5 are preferably of a greater depth or vertical thickness than the rails 6. The ends of the stiles 1 are shown as proectmg etf ual distances beyond the top and bottom 0 the box, and the rails 5 and 6 as secured with their longitudinal edges flush with the ends of the stiles. The rails 5 are preferably of such depth that their surfaces which are adjacent the edges of the sides A v of the box are flush therewith, and, since the rails 6 are of lesser depth than the rails 5, said rails 6 are slightly spaced from the edges of the sides of the box. A channel is thus left between the sides of the box and the opposite faces of the rails 6 for purposes hereinafter set forth. The ends B are preferably so assembled that one each of the rails 5 and 6 is at the top and the other at the bottom of the box, as shown in Fi l.

The covers C, C for the top and the ottom of the box, respectively, are shown as of similar construction, and interchangeable, and bonds, as hereinbefore stated, either may be considered as the top or bottom cover of the box. Each of said covers C may be formed of a series of slats or strips 7 of veneer or the like, secured to transversely extending end cleats 8, 8. The cleats 8 are set in a slight distance from the ends of said strips 7 to provide ledges 9 either of which is adapted to be inserted beneath the rails 5 with the corresponding cleat 8 abutting against the rail 5, as shown at the left hand upper .end and right hand lower end of Fig. 1. Each cover C is of such length that when-one of its ends is thus inserted beneath the rail 5 the other end thereof extends approximately to the inner edge of the rail 6, thus enabling the cover to be readily set in place upon the box.

A key 10, in the form of a longitudinal strip of wood is re'novably inserted beneath the rail 6, said key overlapping the adjacent end or ledge 9 of the cover C. In other Words, when the cover C is in position on the box one of the cleats 8 abuts against the rail 5, and the other cleat 8 is spaced from the end of the box and, together with said end of the box, the overhanging rail 6 and the underlying ledge 9, provides a channel, extending transversely of the box, for the reception of the locking strip or key '10. The strip 10 extends preferably cient means for preventing outward dis-' placement of the entire corresponding end of said cover. The cleats 8, 8 rest at their ends upon the side edges of the box and thus cooperate with said overhanging rails 5 and 6 and the key 10 to prevent the displacement of the cover C by either external or internal pressure upon the box. I Each cover C is preferably provided, intermediate the cleats 8, 8, with a cleat 11, the ends of which abut against the projecting ends of the cleats 3 upon the sides of the box. Spanning each end of the cleat 11 is a longitudinal block of wood 12 having a channel on its inner surface for the reception of the cleat .3, and securely'fastened to said cover. The outer face of each block 12 abuts against a projecting end of a cleat 3. A nail or other fastening means. is employed to secure the end of the cleat 3 to said block 12, thereby preventing the tops and sides of said box from bulging out.

Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the several features of my invention, what I claim is: v

1. The combination with a box having an overhanging, inwardly projecting, top flange at each of its ends, of a box cover havlng one end thereof enga- 'ng beneath the flange at one end of. sai box, and a transversely extending longitudinal-kc interposed between the upper surface 0 the other end of said cover and the corresponding flange of said box.

'at each of 1ts ends, of a box cover having cleatsextending transversely across the upper surface of the cover at a slight distance mm the ends thereof, thereby providing ledges at the ends of said cover, said cover, when in position on said box, having one of its ledges inserted beneath the flange at one end of said box with the edge of the corresponding cleat abutting said flan e, and having the other of its ledges exten in approximately to the inner edge of the ange at the other end of said box, thereby providing a channel partially underlying the corresponding flange, between the correspondmg cleat and the end of the box, and a longitudinally slidable key fitting in said channel and extending transversely across the end of said cover.

5. The combination with a box having an overhanging, inwardly projecting, top flange at each of its ends, the under surfaces of the one and of the other of said flanges being approximately flush with and spaced apart from, respectively, the to side edges of the box of a cover supported at its s1des upon the upper side edges of said box, said cover having one of its ends engagin beneath said first named flange and the ot er of its ends extending approximately to the inner edge of said other flange, and a removable v gitudinal strips insertible beneath said other inner rails and overlying the adjoining ends of said cover and bottom.

7. A box comprising sides; ends, each of said ends having frames consisting of stiles and to}; and bottom rails secured upon the aces of said stiles, said rails projecting above and below the top and bottom edges, respectively, of said sides, one of each pair of rails being of a lesser depth than the other topr'ovide a channel between the edges of the sides of the box and the opposite face of the rail, a box-cover and a boxbottom, said cover and bottom being interchangeable and each having an end inserti ble beneath the bottom of the top rail, respectively, having the greater depth, and

longitudinal strips insertible beneath said other rails and overlying the adjoining ends of said cover and bottom.

8. A box comprising sides, ends, each of said ends having frames consisting of stiles and top and bottom rails secured upon the inner faces of said stiles, said rails projecting above and below the top and bottom edges, respectively, of said sides, one of each pair of rails bein ofa lesser depththan the other to provi e a channel between the edges of the sides of the box and the opposite face of the rail, a box-cover and a boxbottom, .said cover and bottom being interchangeable and each having cleats extending transversely across the outer surface thereof at a slight distance from its ends, thereby providing ledgesat said ends, said cover and bottom when in position each ha'ving one of itsledges inserted beneath the rail at one end of said box with the edge of 4b the corresponding cleat abutting said rail,

and having the other of its ledges extendin approximately to the inner edge of the ra at the other end of said box, and transversely extending locking strips, one each for said cover and bottom, insertible beneath said lastmentioned rails and each overlying the adjacent ledges at the end of the corresponding cover or bottom.

9. The combination with a box-frame consisting of sides and ends secured together, each of said ends having top and bottom rails projecting above and below the top and bottom edges, respectively, of said sides, of a box-cover and a box-bottom, said cover and bottom being interchangeable and each having an end insertible beneath one of said rails, and a longitudinal strip insertible beneath each of said other rails and overlapping the adjoining ends of said cover or bottom, respectively.

The combination with a box-frame consisting of sides and ends secured together, each of said-ends having top and bottom rails projecting above and below the top and bottom edges, respectively, of said sides, one of each pair of rails being of a lesser depth than the other to provide a space between the edges of the sides of the boxand the opposite face of the said rail of lesser depth, of a box-cover and a boxbottom, said cover and bottom being interchangeable and each having an end insertible beneath the bottom or top rail, respectively, having the greater depth, and a longitudmal strip insertible beneath each of the said rails of lesser depth and overlapping the adjoining end of said cover or bottom, respectively. v
