land, engineer, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Die-Stamping Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to die stamping presses of the kind wherein the power is applied suddenly by a spring-pressed arm which is controlled and released by a stepped cam.
The object of this invention is to provide an'improved apparatus of this kind.
In apparatus made in accordance with this invention the screw and operating levers are so connected by a link adapted to trans mit a thrust and pull that the rebound of the upper die may be caught and absorbed by the power spring. Means are also provided for the purpose of preventing a second or false stroke due to the rebound by means of a one direction clutch mechanism adapted to come into operation when the upper die and screw makes a partial upward stroke. Means are also provided for keeping the brush for a longer period than if the ink table were attached to the lower die holder. Means are also provided to prevent the delivery of a blow without stopping the ma chine.
The improved machine also embodies a well known wiping device and means for imparting a rotating or scrubbing motion to the inking brush.

The die table 8 and the inking table 2 are moved toward and away from the inking brush at different speeds, so that the inking table remains in contact with the brush for a sufficient time to enable the ink or color to be well distributed on the brush. Instead of moving the'inking table to the brush, the
latter may be moved to the inking table. ',The ink table 2 is mounted on springs 7 or other suitable device so that it can be adjusted as to height.

10 is a bush mounted in the bracket 11 and driven by gear wheels 12. The spindle 9 is mounted eccentrically of the bush 10 and held against rotation by the links 13, 14. The link 14: is pivoted to the bracket 11, the arrangement being such that a rotating or scrubbing mot-ion is imparted to the inking brush. The height of the bracket 11 is adjusted by means of hand wheel and screw 15.
16, 16 are handled nuts for locking the bracket 11 tothe frame 17 The bevel wheels 12 are driven by chain wheels 18, 19, 20, 21 from the main shaft 22.
23, 24: are wiping rolls.
25 is a web of paper.
26 is a take up roll.
27 and 28 are guide rollers for the paper; the take up roller is suspended on an arm 29 pivoted at 30 and weighted at 31.

said bowl operating levers 35, 36, 37, bell crank lever 38, connecting link 39 and lever 40. The levers 38 and 40 act on the bearings 41, 41 of the wiping rollers 23, 24 and depress them against the action of the springs 42. The height of the wiping rollers can be adjusted by hand wheels 43.
The paper is caused to travel and present clean surfaces by means of a cam 44, levers 45 and 46 having bowls 45 and 46 thereon, pivoted to the main frame at 47, rods 48, 49, pawls 50, 51, operating ratchet wheels 52, 53, mounted on the wiping rollers 23, 24.
54 is a guide link for insuring parallel motion of the rods 48, 49.
54 is a crank adapted to be rotated to any desired extent about the pin 54 so as to alter the position of the rods 48 and 49 with respect to the pivotal centers of the pawls 50 and 51, thereby altering the stroke of the pawls for the purpose of regulating the feed of the wiping paper. Fig. 1 shows a 1 n1d way position. As the paper is used it is wound on a drum (not shown) in the known way. In operation the cam 44 first lifts the rod 49 by the lever 46, this causes the wip ng roller 24 to partially revolve and to bring down the take up roll 26; the further travel of the cam 4.4 lifts the rod 48 by means of the lever 45, this causes the wlping roller 23 to partially revolve and allow the take up roll 26 to rise by reason of the balance weight 31.
On the spring pressed lever f is pivoted a bar provided with a rack 56. One end of the bar 55 works in the main frame a.
57 is a pawl provided with an arm 58. The pawl 57 is adapted to engage the rack 56. The pawl 57 is provided with flats 59, 59, and 60 is a spring pressed plunger adapted to engage the flats 59 and hold the pawl 57 in one of two positions.
61, 61 are pins on the bar 55 which engage the arm 58 and alternately raise and depress the pawl 57.
62 is a shoulder on the bar 55.
63 is a pawl pivoted at 64 on the ma1n frame.
65 is a slotted link engaging with a pin 66 on the pawl. 63.
67 is a lever adapted to raise the weight 68 and allow the pawl 63 to fall so as to ride on the bar 55 and engage the shoulder 62. The counterweight 68 is sutliciently heavy to raise the pawl 63 when the cam 79 is at the top of its stroke after the hand lever 67 has been moved to the releasing position.
In operation, the cam 79 on the main shaft Q moves the lever 7 against the action of the spring 0 and lifts the screw (Z and operating head. When the bowl 7' reaches the step in the cam the bar f is drawn sharply back by the spring 0 and the blow is struck.
Should it be desired to keep the machine running idle and prevent the blow from being struck, the weight 68 is raised by the handle 67 and the pawl 63 rides on the bar 55 and engages the stop 62 and holds the lever 7 against the action of the spring.
When a blow is given the pin 61 on the bar 55 depresses the pawl 57 so that it rides on the bar 55; on the rebound the pawl 57 rides over the rack 56 and engages therewith so as to hold the lever f against the action of the spring 0 and prevent a second or false blow. At the time the blow is given the inking table is under the brush and the brush is receiving a supply of ink. During the time that the screw (Z is being raised, the inking brushes continue to be moved over the table 2. lVhen the screw (Z is raised a short distance the inking table is moved away from under the brush 8, the wiping rollers 'are raised and the die table 8 is moved so as to come under the brush 8 to receive a supply of ink. The wiping rollers are then moved and given a partial rotation as the die passes under the wiping rollers, the direction of rotation being opposite to the movement of the die. Just before the screw cl has risen to its highest position the die is brought to a stand under the press.
hat we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A die stamp-ing press comprising a stamping screw, a lever arm connected thereto, a stepped cam, and a spring-pressed arm operated and released by said cam, in combination witha thrust and pull link between said spring-pressed arm and lever arm, a sliding member connected to said springpressed arm, teeth on said sliding member, a one direction clutch, coacting with said sliding member, automatic means for retaining said clutch into engaging position with said teeth during the initial part of the as cending motion of the screw and for subsequently releasing the clutch from the teeth of the sliding member, whereby return motion of the spring-pressed arm under the action of rebound is prevented.
2. A die stamping press, comprising a stamping screw, a lever arm connected thereto, a stepped cam and a spring-pressed arm operated and released by said cam, in combination with a link between said springpressed arm and lever arm, whereby thrust and pull can be transmitted between the same, a die holder, an inking table and an inking brush, means for traveling said die holder under the inking brush, independently of the inking table, and means for imparting relative motion between the brush and inking table, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

A die stamping press, comprising a stamping screw, a lever arm connected thereto, a stepped cam and a spring-pressed arm operated and released by said cam, in combination with a link between said springpressed arm and lever arm, whereby thrust and pull can be transmitted between the same, a die holder, an inking table and a rotary inking brush, levers and links 'for traveling the said die holder under the inking brush, levers and links for traveling the inking table under the inking brush independently of the said die, and cam mechanism for imparting the motion to said levers and links, substantially as specified.
4. A die stamp-ing press, comprising a stamping screw, a lever arm connected thereto, a stepped cam and a spring-pressed arm operated and released by said cam, in combination with a link between said springpressed arm and lever arm, whereby thrust and pull can be transmitted between the same, and a catch adapted to be moved into position to lockthe spring-pressed member in inoperative position, substantially as specified.

A die stamping press comprising a stampingscrew, a lever arm connected thereto, a stepped cam and a spring-pressed arm operated and released by said cam, in combination with a thrust and pull link between said spring-pressed arm and lever arm, a sliding member connected to said springpressed arm, teeth on said sliding member,
a one direction clutch coacting with said sliding member, automatic means for retaining said clutch into engaging position with said teeth during the initial part of the ascending motion of the screw and for subsequently releasing the clutch from the teeth of the sliding member, whereby return motion of the spring-pressed arm under the action of rebound is prevented, and a catch adapted to be moved into position to lock said sliding member and spring-pressed arm in inoperative position, substantially as specified.
