wash boilers and the leading object of thesame is to provide a wash boiler with improved means mounted therein for compressing clothes during the operation of loosening the dirt therefrom by boiling water.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to be mounted in an ordinary wash boiler and including rotary means adapted to compress the clothes to be washed during the operation of loosening the dirt by boiling.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to be mounted in a wash boiler of rotary compressing means mounted for free vertical adjustment and means for rotating said compressing means;

Another object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to be mounted in a wash boiler including rotary clothes compressing means and a water agitator cooperating therewith.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain combinations constructions, and arrangement of parts, clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings and clearly described in the specification.

In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a wash boiler provided with the improved device; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a top plan view.

Referring to the drawings 5 denotes a wash boiler of suitable design which may be provided with an outlet valve 6 whereby the same may be readily drained when desired. The boiler 5 is preferably provided with a conical bottom 6 forming a seat for the open bottom 7 which is removably disposed on said conical bottom 6. The false or removable bottom 7 is in the form of a circular disk of metal or other material and formed with a series of spaced openings. extends above the upper end of the boiler or vessel 5, and shaft 8 is squared to receive. an operating handle or crank 9 whereby said shaft may be rotated. The shaft 8 is held for rotation by a bar 10 which has a central bearing opening to receive the upper end of the shaft and which is provided with offset rim engaging U-shaped terminal portions 11, which are formed with openings 11 to recelve the eyes or tongues 12 in which are inserted the pins 12.

The shaft 8 formed with a plurality ofradially spaced grooves 14 adapted to receive the inner ends of the compressing roller hanger arms 15, which inner ends are formed with spaced flanges 16 whereby the same can have free vertical movement in the guideways let. The outer ends of the hanger arms 15 are bent downwardly and receive the trunnions or outer ends 17 of the shafts of the compressing rollers 18, which are made of iron or other heavy material and are suitably fluted to present a roughened surface to the clothes. The inner ends of the rollers 18 carry guides 19 adapted to move in the gnideways 14. The

weighted compressing rollers 18 are adapted to hold the clothes in a compact condition against the bottom or disk 7 and in this way promote the loosening of the dirt from the clothes.

The lower end of the shaft 8 carries a plurality of agitating arms 20 which are rotatable therewith and which operate below the bottom or disk 7 and are adapted to maintain the water in the lower part of the boiler or vessel 5 in constant motion. In this way a steam generating space is provided whereby the cleansing can be eXpedited.

In order to hold the steam within the re ceptacle or boiler 5 a cover comprising sections 21 and 22 is provided, said coverbeing connected by a series of hinges 23 to the bar 10 and held closed by means of latches 24:.

compressing rollers 18 in contact with the clothes. By rotating the shaft 8 through the medium of the crank 0r handle 9 the compression rollers 18 may be rotated, thereby packing the clothes more tightly within the boiler and holding them against the lifting action of the steam and hot water. Owing to the independent mounting of the rollers upon the guide 13 said rollers will have a variable vertical movement, Which will prevent binding of their supports upon the guides and compensate for the unevenness of the upper. surface of the clothes. This arrangement further provides for the ready removal of each or all of the rollers without removing the shaft, thus permitting the shaft to be operated after the rollers have been removed. The inner ends of the shafts and hangers are. formed H-shaped to provide locking flanges which are adapted to interlock with the guideways formed in said shaft.

Having described our invention, we claim:

1. In combination with a vessel, a shaft journaled in the vessel and formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending guideways opening through the upper end thereof, a plurality of shafts having H-shaped inner ends slidably interlocking with the guideways and removable through the upper ends thereof, hangers for said shafts and having inner ends slidably interlocking with said guideways and removable through the upper ends thereof, and compressing rollers carried by said shafts and adapted to be moved around said first shaft.

2. A washing device comprising a vessel having a conical lower end, a perforated bottom located in said vessel and bearing against the conical lower end thereof and spaced by said conical lower end from the bottom of said vessel, a shaft having its lower end journaled in said bottom an formed with a plurality of longitudinal guideways, shafts having H-shaped inner ends independently slidable in the guideways and movable over the perforated bottom with said shaft, hangers having depending outer ends supporting the outer ends of the shafts and H-shaped inner ends interlocking with the guideways, fluted rollers mounted on said second shafts and adapted to contact with said perforated bottom and be moved by said shaft over said bottom, and a top forming a bearing for said shaft.
