Description

A. A. ZIEGLBR. BINDING POST. APPLICATION nun No.29; 1909 1,042,747. I Patented Oct. 29, 1912.
UNITED s'rA'rEs PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED A. ZIEGLER, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 UNITED ELEQ- TRIC APPARATUS COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
BINDING-PO StT,
Original application filed September 14, 1908, Serial No. 452,846. Dlvided and. this application filed December 29, 1909. Serial No. 535,432.
cation #452,846, filed September 141, 1908.
and the invention relates to binding-posts, and has for its object to construct a bindingpost essentially of insulating material, which when secured to its support-is entirely insulated therefrom, and which is provided at both ends with means forattaching thereto or detaching therefrom the CiICIllt wires without disturbing the securing means for the post. i D
Figure 1 is aside elevation of a blndlngpost embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of'the same. I
(Z represents a shouldered post of insulating material adapted to be arranged beneath. a support 0, its reduced portion cl projecting up through a hole in sald support for a short distance, and its shoulder err.
- gaging the under side otthe support. On
said reduced ortion, above the support, a tubular post 2 is placed, the center-hole in said tubular post being of a size to, corre- 6 0nd to thesize of the reduced portion (Z of the post (1. As here shown, the upperend of the tubular post is flush with the upper end of the shouldered post. Washers may be ar-' ranged between the posts and the support if desired. The post (Z has a center-hole through it from end to end. A long bolt d extends through said center-hole, the opposite ends of which project beyond the opposite ends of the posts. A shouldered head (1 is formed on the bolt, near one end, which engages the lower end of the post (Z, and the opposite end oft/he bolt is threaded'and rcceives upon it a nut cl. By turning up said nut the parts are clamped together and held in fixed relative positions. The bolt d has .a'threaded end portion projecting beyond the head dflan'd on said threaded end portion, and also on the'threaded portion at the opposite endof the bolt, wire-engaging nuts and check-nuts d are arranged for cir- .cuit-wires c" and c and for holding the wire- 'engaging nuts respectively in place.- Suitable washers are or may be interposed between the several nuts.
It will be observed that the wire-engaging nuts may be turned to attach or detach the circuit-wires without removing or loosening the bolt (i and hence the electric connections may be made withoutdisturbing the post, so far as its fixed relation to its support is concerned. l f
For the purposes of holding the post- (5 from turning relative to its support, it is formed with a small socket at one side of its center-hole which receives a pind, pro
pose of holding the bolt (1 fromturning, its head has a pin d which enters a hole in the Patented Oct. 29,1912. 1
jecting from the support; and, for the. purend of the post at the side of the center-hole. Y
Metallic caps or ferrules d may be placedon the ends of the posts (Z and. d, if desired, which have center-holes for the bolt. case said posts are made of some kinds of insulating material which is somewhat brit? tle, said capsor ferrules are quite necessary. The binding-post thus shown is constructed and arranged to extend through the support and to have attached to it at both ends the circuit-wires; and is insulated from its support, and the bolt, which serves as a con ductor, passes through it. But my invention is not limited to the employment of all I of the elements herein shown and described, or to them precise construction, as it is ob- VlOllS that posts may be made embodying my invention wherein some of the aforesaid elements are omitted and modified.
I claim: 1. A binding-post consisting of a shouldered post of insulating material, having a center-hole through it, the reduced the construction port, a tubular post of insulating material adapted to fit on the reduced portion. of the shouldered post, a bolt extended through the shouldered post having means thereon for engaging both posts and holding them in clam ing engagement with the support, and having screwthreaded portions at both 'cnds I projecting beyond the post-engaging means,
and wire-engaging nuts arranged onboth of said screw-threaded port-ions, whereby the post is entirely insulated from its supportand the circuit-wires attached thereto without disturbing its securing means, and means to connect said bolt Wlth theshouldered post, and means to connect said shouldered ortionv of which projects through a hole in its supholt are held from turning, substantially as [and Wire-engaging nuts arranged on said 10 bolt, substantially as described. described. I In testimony whereof, I have signed my 2. A binding-post consisting of a post of name to this specification in the presence of insulating material having a center hole two subscribing Witnesses. through it and a socket at one side of said ALFRED A. ZiEGLER. center-hole, a bolt extended through said qenter-hole having a head provided with a pin adapted to enter the socket in the post post with the support whereby said post and Witnesses:
