COMBINATION FOUNTAIN-PEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 30, 1911. Serial-No. 636,171.
It is the object of the present invention to.
provide a fountain pen, adapted to contain two separate supplies of inks, which supplies may be of different colors, either supply of ink being fed to the pen point, at will.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for filling a fountain With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that Y of meeting.
In carrying out the invention there is provided, as a primary and fundamental .element, a "cylindrical barrel 1, open at both ends. At its rear end, the barrel 1 terminates in a reduced, threaded neck 2, adapted to fit within a cap 3, having a central chamber 4;, communicating'with the bore of the barrel 1. Located within the barrell, is a longitudinal partition 5, dividing the interior of the barrel into two separate compartments.
The invention further includes a connection 6, having a reduced end 7 adapted to fit smoothly, without threading, into the forward end of the barrel 1. The opposite end of the connection 6 is provided with. a reduced neck 8', threaded to engage with a thimble 9, into which is inserted a tip 10. The tip 10 supports, in .the usual manner, a
pen point 11, which extends backwardly' into a duct 12,for1n ed in the outer face of the tip 10, the rear end of the pen point 1], The
connection 6 is provided with a closed end wall 14, to which is secured a resilient disk 15, adapted to abut against another resilientdisk 16, the disk 16 resting against the'cud of the partition 5, and engaging frictionally with the inner wall of the barrel 1. Inserted through the disk 16, are spaced tubes 17 either of which may be alined with an opening 18 through the disk or washer 15 and through the end wall 1 1, when the co-nn'ec tion 6 is rotated. The opening 18 is alined withthe duct 12, and communicates therewith. About each of the tubes 17, is secured a resilient, compressible reservoir 19, the reservoirs being located upon opposite sides of the partition 5. The reservoirs 19 are equipped, at their rear ends, with stems 20, extended beyond the end of the barrel 1, the stems being received within the chamber Patented Oct. 29,1912.

Presupposing that the pen is empty, the operation of filling the same is as follows: The connection 6 is rotated in the barrel-1, until the opening 18 is alined with one of the tubes 17, this alinement being secured by bringing a mark 22 upon the connect-ion 6 into alinement with the proper mark 23 upon the barrel 1, as shown in Fig. 4. The cap 3 is then removed, and the stems 20 are thus exposed. The appropriate stem may then be twisted, twisting the corresponding reservoir 19, and forcing the air out of this reservoir. The'pen point 11 being dipped into a source of supply, if the twisted reservoir 19. be released, it will be understood readily that ink of one color, may be sucked into a particular reservolr.

This will aline the opening 18 with the other tube 17 whereupon the other reservoir 19 may be filled in the manner hereinbefore described. Obviously, between the filling of the two reservoirs, the

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is in a fountain pen, a barrel; a partition extended longitudinally of the barrel; a compressible reservoir upon each side of the partition; separate means connected with oeavae the rear ends of the reservoirs for manipulating the reservoirs individually; a member resting against one end of the partition and having openings communicating with the reservoirs; and an ink-applying element rdtatable in the barrel and having an open ing alinable with each of the openings in said member; the partition constituting a reinforcement for the barrel and serving to prevent a distortion of one of the reservoirs when the manipulating means of the other reservoir is operated. the partition engaging the reservoirs to prevent the said member from rotating when the ink-applying element is rotated.
