Specification of Letters Patent.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT V. PFLAUMM, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Tonasket, in the county of Okanagon and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater Elevating and Impellin Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus of the above type, and has for its primary object to provide a novel construction embodying a valved plunger through which the fluid to be impelled is admitted to the chamber beneath the plunger during movement of the latter in its inactive stroke.
A further object resides in the provision of novel valve controlling mechanism associated with the plunger.
YVith the above and other objects in View, to be referred to as my description progresses, my invention resides in. the features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described, succinctly defined in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout: Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical section of an apparatus constructed in accordance with my inven tion, arranged to receive fluid from a flume. Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof, portions being broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through one side portion of the plunger and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section through the lower portion of the plunger receiving chamber. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal section illustrating the chamber and plunger in modified form, portions of the plunger being broken away. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section of the plunger, illustrating more particularly one of the valves and its controlling mechanism, the said valve being in open position. Fig. 7 is a vertical section illustrating more particularly the provision of additional weights, as provided for in the plunger construction shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary elevation of the modified form of chamber, and Fig. 9 is a section illustrating theolosure securing means for the intake ports of the chamber.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 indicates a chamber, provided in its lower portion with an outlet with which communicates a delivery pipe 2, and 3 indicates a weight plunger which is adapted to lower by gravity and expel the underlying water through pipe 2, in a manner hereinafter more fully set forth. Plunger 3 is formed to permit of the passage of water therethrough, the same, as now considered, being formed with four ports at controlled by valves 5, pivoted at 5 and provided with respective arms 6 whose outer end portions are equipped with weights 7, which latter are held for adjustment lengthwise of the arms by bolts, as 8.
Reference numeral 9 indicates spring held catches pivoted on arms 6 and normally engaged with keepers 10 of the plunger, for locking valves 4 in closed position.
For releasing catches 9 simultaneously, I provide actuators 11 which are slidably mounted in suitable apertures of arms 6 and connected through flexible connections, as 12, with a common power applying means, which latter, in the present embodiment of my invention comprises a cable 13, employed for elevating the plunger. Actuators 11 are connected with their respective catches 9 through the medium of links 14.
In the operation of the mechanism thus far described, an upward pull on cable 13 and flexible connections 12 first operates actuators 11 to release catches 9 and then swings the arms 6 to the position shown in Fig. 6, when the movement of the latter is limited by flexible connections 15. Further application of power to the cable 13 will then obviously serve to elevate the plunger, during which movement water will be permitted to flow through the ports 4:. For the purpose of illustration 1 have shown a drum, as 16 for applying lifting power to cable 13, the said drum being loose on a shaft 17 to which power is applied from a drive shaft 18 through the medium of gearing 19.
Reference numeral 20 indicates a clutch part splined to shaft 17 and connected with a suitable shifting lever 21 for movement into and out of engagement with a relatively fixed clutch part 22 of the drum. l/Vith the clutch open, as shown in Fig. 2 drum 16 is free to permit of the unwinding of the cable through lower movement of plunger 3.
Drum stand 23 can be mounted at any desired point. A simple arrangement consists in mounting the same on a bracket 24L rigidly fixed to the upper portion of chamber 1.
Reference numerals 25 and 26 indicate direction sheaves for cable 1, the latter of which is journaled on a stand 27 directly over chamber 1.
Plunger 3 preferably has its rim portion 3 composed of sections adjustably supported on the disk-like plunger body portion by stud bolts 28 which engage in slots of the rim sections, as more clearly shown in Fig. 8.
Reference numeral 28' indicates a packing ring which is seated in a peripheral groove of rim portion 3 and backed by segmental bearing plates 29, which latter are engaged by screws 30 for adjusting the packing ring outwardly against the wall of the chamber.
"When a flume, as 31, is employed for supplying water to chamber 1 1 preferably provide said chamber with a plurality of intake ports, as 32, in vertical arrangement. The lower most of these ports however, are normally closed, as by plugs 33 and only opened for operation as required through lowering of the water in the flume. Plugs 33 are held seated, as by bars 34:, bolted to chamber 1, as more clearly shown in Fig. 9.
Reference numeral indicates a screen which can be arranged over the active intake port 32.
Chamber 1 is preferably formed of a plurality of superimposed cylindrical sections and has a removable bottom wall 1 which is bolted to an inturned flange 1 of the lowermost section, this construction permitting of a chamber of any desired length being built, as is apparent.
In the construction shown in Fig. l the abutting ends of the component sections of chamber 1 lap one another and are fixedly united as by bolts b6, while in the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 8 the chamber sections are divided longitudinally and provided with side and end flanges 39, 39 re spectively with which suitable securing bolts 38 are engaged.
In Figs. 5 and 7 I have shown the plunger provided with threaded stems it) on which weights ll can be removably held.
In employing a valved plunger, as hereinbefore set forth, I am enabled to provide for a continuous flow of the water into chamber 1 during lowering movement of the plunger, which, collecting in the upper portion of the chamber will add materially to the weight imposed on the water beneath plunger 3.
Reference numeral e2 indicates stops for limiting upward movement of the plunger.
Delivery pipe 2 is provided with a check valve 50 for preventing back flow of the water from the upper portion of the pipe during elevating movement of plunger 8, as is apparent. Above said check valve a suitable draw-oft cock, as 51, is provided.
Reference numeral 52 indicates springs for retracting actuators 11.
Various changes can be made in the structural details without. departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in my appended claims, and further, it will be understood that chamber 1 can be arranged in any desired manner to receive water, as for eX- ample, it can be arranged in a well or other body of water.
Having thus described by invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of Amen ica, is:
1. In apparatus of the character described, a vertically disposed water chamber provided in its upper end portion with an inlet for the water, a water delivery means connected with the lower end portion of said chamber, a weight plunger in said chamber, said plunger being formed with a port, a pivoted valve on said plunger for closing the said port thereof, means for normally locking said valve in closed position, means for elevating said plunger, and means for releasing said valve locking means connected with said last named means for operation thereby.
2. In apparatus of the character described, a vertically disposed water chamber provided in its upper end portion with an inlet for the water, a water delivery means connected with the lower end portion of said chamber, a weight plunger in said chamber, said plunger being formed with a port, a pivoted valve on said plunger for closing the said port thereof, means for normally locking said valve in closed position, a flexible connection for limiting opening movement of said valve, and means for elevating said plunger connected with said valve to open the same prior to imparting lifting movement to said plunger.
3. In apparatus of the character described, avertically disposed Water chamber provided in its upper end portion with an inlet for the water, a water delivery means connected with the lower end portion of said chamber, a Weight plunger in said chamber, said plunger being formed with a port, a pivoted valve on said plunger for closing the said port thereof, means for normally looking said valve in closed position, a flexible connection for limiting opening movement of said valve, and means for elevating said plunger connected with said valve, said valve locking means connected with said last named means for releasing movementthereby.
4. In apparatus of the character de scribed, a vertically disposed water chamber, a water delivery means connected with the lower end portion of said chamber, a weight plunger in said chamber provided With a port, a pivoted valve on said plunger for closing the said port thereof, an arm secured to said valve, a weight on said arm, means for limiting opening movement of said valve, and means for elevating said plunger connected with said arm for opening said valve.
5. In apparatus of the character de scribed, a vertically disposed water chamber open for reception of water through its upper end portion, a weight plunger in said chamber provided with a port to permit of the water passing beneath the plunger, a fluid delivery means connected with the lower end portion of said chamber, a valve controlling the port of said plunger, means for holding said valve closed during lowering movement of said plunger, means for elevating said plunger, and means actuated by said last named means for opening said valve.
6. In apparatus of the character described, a water chamber formed for the intake of water through its upper end portion, a delivery means for the water communicating with the lower end portion of said chamber, a weight plunger in said chamber provided with a plurality of ports, valves on said plunger controlling the ports thereof, means for holding said valves closed during lowering movement of said plunger, and means for elevating said plunger.

8. In apparatus of the character described, a water chamber formed for the intake of water through its upper end portion, a delivery means for the water communicating with the lower end portion of said chamher, a weight plunger in said chamber provided with a port, a valve on said plunger controlling the port thereof, means for holding said valve closed during lowering movement of said plunger, means on said plunger for securing weights thereon, and means for elevating said plunger.
9. In apparatus of the character described, a water chamber provided in its upper end portion with a vertical series of ports, removable closure means for the lower of said ports, a delivery means for the water communicating with the lower end portion of said chamber, a weight plunger in said chamber provided with a port, a valve for the port of said plunger, and means for elevating said plunger.
10. In apparatus of the character described, a vertically disposed water chamber provided in its upper end portion with an inlet for the water, a water delivery means connected with the lower end portion of said chamber, a weight plunger arranged in said chamber and normally free to lower therein by gravity to thereby discharge water through said delivery means, said plunger having a through port, a flexible means for elevating said plunger, a pivoted valve for the port of said plunger, and means actuated by said last named means for opening said valve.
11. In apparatus of the character described, a vertically disposed water chamber provided in its upper end portion with an inlet for the water, a water delivery means connected with the lower end portion of said chamber, a weight plunger arranged in said chamber and normally free to lower therein by gravity to thereby discharge water through said delivery means, said plunger having a through port, means for elevating said plunger, a pivoted valve for maintaining the port of said plunger closed during the downward stroke of the latter, and means whereby said valve is opened to permit of passage of the water through the port of said plunger during upward movement of the latter.
