To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, BERNARD A. KAN- 'rnowirz, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Filters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to filters, and its object is to provide a simple and cheap device which can be easily taken apart to clean same or make any necessary repairs as will be more fully described in the following specification set forth in the claims and illustrated in the drawings, wherein,

This filter consists of a globular shell divided into two parts, 5 and 6, the shell 5 having an inlet 7 and screw threads 8 therein to secure same to faucets 9. The lower portion of the part 5 is provided with a perforated diaphragm 10, while around same is a groove 11, adapted to receive a packing 12. This upper portion 5 also has an annular flange 13 upon which is fitted a ring 14:, having screw threads 15 by which it is secured to the upper end of the lower portion 6. This lower portion also has a flange 16 adapted to enter the groove 11 and fit against the packing 12. The upper side of this portion is also provided with a perforated diaphragm l7, and between this and the diaphragm 10 a packing of fabric may be inserted in order to prevent the passage of impurities through the filter as the water works through the strainer 18.
When the filter has been some time in use and a great amount. of dirt and sand collected in the upper part, the lower portion may be removed by unscrewing the ring let and separating the two parts of the filter. This does not necessitate the elimination of the ring let, but simply the unscrewing of same when it will be possible to remove the lower part and take out the packing 18 for cleansing when the dirt may also pass through the perforations in the upper diaphragm. In the center of the diaphragm 10 a blank space is permitted to remain in order to diffuse the water as it fiows through the opening 7 and causes same to run through the perforations evenly.
lit is obvious that other alterations and modifications may be made in the details without departing from the essential features above described.
The ring 14 is provided with studs 19 for unscrewing same while similar studs 20 project from the sides of the part 6 so that it might be turned in a different direction from the ring when it is desired to unscrew the two or screw them together. The inlet 7 is surrounded by a gasket 7 to prevent the leakage of water.
The object of this device is to provide a filter, which will not accumulate dirt as when the filtering pad becomes filled with dirt and impurities it may be thrown away, and a new and clean one substituted. Pads of lint have been found most serviceable and inexpensive so they are the most effectual in preventing the passage of dirt, and cost but little.
This construction provides a filter using no rivets, screws or bolts which are apt to become loosened or lost and often rust, and are difficult to unscrew when it is desired to renew the pad or strainer.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
In a filter, the combination with a shell comprising two hemispheric sections, of perforated diaphragms at the larger ends of the sections, a filter disk adapted to fit between the diaphragms, a ring swiveled on one of the sections and having threads to engage the other section, means for rotating the ring and compressing the filter between the diaphragms and a flange on one of the diaphragms and fitting in a groove in the other.
