Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. RUMsnY, a citizen of the United'States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Doors, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

The car door provided by the invention is to which it is ap-' preferably made from a metal plate 10 having the form illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. As shown this metal plate is of substantially rectangular shape, and is wider than the door for the greater portion of itsv length, the endportions of the :plate being, however, reduced in /width to the width of the door by cutting out the corners of the plate, as indicated at 11, 12, 13 and 14. In
forming the door the plate 10 may be out upon the lines 15 and 16, extending inwardly from the vertical edges of the plate adjacent its upper end, and-then folded at the places indicated by the dotted lines- 17 18 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 on Fig. 3, in the following manner.
The upper marginal portion of "the plate 10 extending between the cut-out corners l1 and 13 is folded backwardly at right angles upon the line 17, forming a flange 26. That part of the plate above the cuts 15, 16, is then doubled upon itself at the place indicated by the dotted line 18. The upper margin of the door is thus made of a double thickness, as indicated at 25 (Fig. 4). This double thick portion is equal in length to the full width of the plate 10, whereby its ends 32, 33, project beyond the door at each side for the attachment of hangers, as 47,

equal in length to the width, of the door,
whereby rollers, as 44, 45, mounted on the hangers 47 and-48, respectively, clear the ends of this flange.
Similarly the lower endportion of the plate extending between the cut-out corners 12 and 14 is bent backwardly at right angles on the line 22, forming a flange 29. The
lower portion of the plate is then doubled upon itself by bending the plate upon the line 23. The lower edge of the door is thus formed of a double thickness of metal, as indicated at 27, and the flange 29 extends across theface of the door adjacent this double thick portion.
To provide a suitable abutment for engaging the front door post of the car body to which the door is applied, that edge 'of the plate 10 adjacent to and extending below the cut 15 is bent outwardly at right angles at the place indicated by the dotted line 19, whereby'a vertical outstandin flange 30 is provided at the front edge of t e door. An abutment for engaging the rear door post of the car body is provided-by folding inwardly that part of the plate 10 extending below the cut 16. In making this fold the plate is preferably bent upon the lines 20 and 21, whereby the rear edge of the door is stiffened and a weathering cleat 31 is provided at the rear ed e of the door.
The door is preferably slidingly hung upon the side wall of a car body. This is conveniently done by means of a combined track and hood of the form shown and described in my patent application on car doors, Case B, filed concurrently herewith. Details of a car body equipped with such a track are shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the sidewall of the car being designated 34 and its door opening 35. The

Angle plates 39 and 40, each having instanding flanges, as 41, 49,, are applied to the opposite faces of the combined eaves facia strip and track block 28, and project below the same, the flanges l1, l2, of the angle plates serving as rails for supporting the door.
In applying the door to the car body the double thick upper marginal portion 25 extends into the space between the angle plates 39 and 40, and the outstanding flange 26 of the door overlies the instanding flange 4-1 of the angle plate 39. This flange therefore serves both to stifi'en the door and as a weathering flange when the door is closed. In this case the hangers 47, 48, preferably take the form of pins set through the projecting end portions 32, 33, of the double thick part 25 of the door, and two rollers 44 and 45 are loosely mounted upon each pin, one at each side of the door.
The double thick lower marginal portion 28 of the door runs in a groove preferably formed by applying a Z-bar 49 to the s de wall 3% of the car below the door opening 35. As shown, the flange'29 overhangs the upper edge of the Z-bar 49 Whereby, like the flange 26, it serves both as a stiffening and weathering flange.
If desired an angle plate 50 may be provided at the side wall 34 of the car along 35, to serve as an abutment to be engaged by the flange 30 of the door when the latter is closed. For sealing tlie'door opening at the rear edge of the door a Z bar 51 preferably extends along the rear vertical edge of the door opening 35, to be engaged by the cleat 31. Preferably the projecting flange, as 52, of the Z-bar 51 is made flaring in order that the door may be brought tightly against the side wall of the car by a cam action, by reason of the engagement therewith of the free edge of the cleat 31 as the door is brought to closed position.
The track and hood formed by the use of the combined eaves facia strip and track block designated 38 is not herein claimed for the reason that it is made the subject of my heretofore mentioned application for patent on car doors, Case B.
l claim as my invention 1. A car door made from a metal plate of substantially rectangular shape folded upon itself along one end to provide a double thick hanger support at the upper margin of the door, the edge of the folded over portion of the plate being outturned to form a weathering and stiffening flange extending horizontally across the face of the door below the said hanger support.
2. A car door made from a metal plate of substantially rectangular shape folded upon itself along each end to provide a double thick hanger-support at the upper margin of the door-and a double thick door-bracket engaging portion at the lower margin of the door, the edges of both of the said folded over portions of the plate being outturned to provide weathering and stifiiening flanges axtending horizontally across the face of the oor.
3. A car door made from a metal plate of substantially rectangular shape and Wider than the door intermediate its ends, one side of the plate being bent outwardly to provide a stiffening and door stop engaging flange extending along the front edge of the door, the otherside of the plate being folded over upon the body of the plate to provide a stiffening and Weathering cleat extending along the rear edge of the door and one end of the plate being folded to provide a double thick hanger-support extending across the top of the door.

5. A car door made from a metal plate wider than the door adjacent one end and of the same width as the door for a short distance at the said end, the said Wide portion'of the plate being folded upon itself centrally across the plate and the said end of the plate being outturned whereby a stiffening and Weathering horizontal flange extends entirely across the door adjacent one end and double thick hanger supports project at-each side of the door above the said flange.
6. A car door made from a metal plate wider than the door except at its ends and having a cut extending inwardly from each side adjacent one end, one side of the plate below the out being turned outwardly to provide a stiflening and door-stop engaging flange extending along the corresponding side of the door, the other side of the plate below the out being folded over upon the body of the plate to provide a stiffening and weathering cleat extending along the correspending side of the door, that part of the late above the cuts being folded over upon itself on a transverse line and the adjacent end of the plate being outturned whereby a stiflening and weathering horizontal flange extends entirely across the door adjacent one end and double thick hanger'supports project at each side of the door above the said flange.
7. A car door made from a metal plate wider than the door except at its ends and having a cut extending inwardly from each side adjacent one end, one side of the plate below the out being turned'outwardly to provide a stiffening and door stop engaging flange extending along the corresponding side of the door, the other side of the plate below the out being folded over upon the body of the plate to provide a stiflening and weathering cleat extending along the corresponding side of the door, and that part of the plate above the cuts being folded over upon itself to provide a double thickhanger support at the top of the door.
8. A car door made from a metal plate wider than the door exoe t at its ends, the two sides of the plate belng folded'to provide a stiffening and door-stop engaging flange extending along each side of the door,
