To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR D. EVERETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garden City, in the county of Glasscock and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improve ments in pipe clamps, and is designed espe cially for use in connection with the tubing or piping of wells.
Theobject of the invention is the provision of a device that is adaptable for use to clamp and hold a pipe or tube, as it is being raised from a well, in order that another attachment may be made to the pipe as it is raised step by step from the well.
The device as constructed provides a simple, inexpensive, but eificient tool that may be operated by the foot of an attendant, and will respond promptly in case of emergency, while at the same time will form a secure holding device for retaining the pipe in place.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete embodiment of the invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device embodying my invention, as applied to a pipe.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the drawings, it will be noted that the clamp proper includes two frames, 1 and 2, the former comprising two parallel angle irons connected at one end by the cross bar 3, while the other end is formed by bending the side bars into U- shape thus providing a face plate or bar 4:- The parallel side bars of the frame 2 are also angle irons, and these bars are gradually brought together forming a V-shape inclosure 5, the ends of the bars being secured together by bolts 6 and complementary nuts. The two frames are secured together by means of bolts 7 and nuts 8, the former being passed through registering or alining holes 9 in the bars of the frames. By this means the size of the inclosure 5 may be 111- creased or diminished by the simple operation of sliding the frame bars with relation 55. to each other until the desired size is accomplished, and then securing the parts in adjusted position by means of the nuts 7 and bolts 8. This adjustment of the inclosure 5 adapts the device to various sized pipes or tubes, one of which is indicated by the number 10.
In applying the frame to the tube or pipe, the frame 2, before being connected to the frame 1, is slipped around the pipe in position of Fig. 1, the frame 1 is then bolted to the frame 2 after the parts have been adjusted to position about the pipe.
During the operation of raising the pipe from the well the pipe is held in raised position by means of a pair of toothed dogs or pawls 11, which are pivoted on the cross rod 12 secured in the frame 1. These pawls may be operated from the foot lever 13, which is pivoted on the cross brace 14-, by means of the link 15 pivoted at one end to the foot lever and at its other end pivoted to the pair of pawls by means of the pivot bar 16.
The operation of the device will be evident from an inspection of the drawings, in which the parts are in operative position clamping the pipe. By pressure on the foot lever, the two pawls are made to contact on and push against the pipe, thus shoving the pipe against the walls of the V-shape iuclosure between which parts it is securely clamped. The parts may be disengaged by releasing the foot lever, thus withdrawing the pawls from contact with the pipe. While in clamped position it is impossible for the pipe to fall, as it is held rigidly and securely, and the bite of the teeth 011 the pawls prevents slipping of the pipe.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a pair of frames, one of which is formed with an open end and fashioned to provide a V-shape inclosure, of a foot lever pivoted in the other frame, and a pivoted pawl connected to said lever, whereby a pipe may be clamped in the V-shape inclosure by means of the pawl.
2. The combination with a pair of frames of angle irons and slidable with relation to each other, one of said frames having an open end and bent to form a V-shaped inclosure, a pair of pivoted pawls supported in the other frame adapted to bear against a pipe in the inclosure and clamp the same therein, and a foot lever for actuating said pawls.
