To all whomit may concern:
Be it known thatI, JESSE ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York. in the county of Kingsand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Actions, of which the following is a specifi- Ctl'tlon.
My invent-ion relates particularly to an action for front stroke visible writing machines.
The main object is to' provide a construction having a light touch and capable of rapid operation.
Briefly the-invention contemplates a pivoted key lever, a pivoted type bar anda pivoted intermediate lever, the intermediate lever beingconnected to the key lever and to the type bar by springs and the intermediate leverand type bar having a sliding engagement at the beginning of the movement. The universal bar is operated from the intel-mediate levers. i
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the machine showing one unit of the action in side elevation in the normal position of rest. Fig. 2, is a detail side view of a type bar. Fig. 3, is a detail side view of an intermediate lever. Fig. 4, is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the action in the printing position. Fig. 5, is a detail edge view of one of the intermediate levers for a unit near the edge of the machine.
The key levers may be arranged in banks as is .customary and the type bars may be arranged on the segment of a cylinder and it will be necessary to describe only one unit.
The key lever 1" pivoted at 2 is sustained by a spring 3 and guided in the slots of a comb 4.
The type bar 5 is pivoted at 6 in the type segment 7 and has its free e'nd supported by a basket or flange 8,
The intermediate levers are pivoted on a shaft 9 and each has a rearwardly extending arm 10 connected to its key lever by a spring 11 and a vertical arm 12 connected by a 'spring 13 to a lug 14 on the type bar above andin front of its pivot'. The intermediate levei' also has a lug 15 with an inclined edge having a slidingengagement with an inclined edge of the lug 16 on the type bar.
When a key lever is depressed the intermediate lever is tilted to the rear and the inclined edge of the lug l5 forces thev type bar upward toward the printing position by reason of its sliding engagement with the edge of the lug 16. As the pressure on the key lever is continued the spring connection between the intermediate lever and the lug Mon the type bar' brings the type bar to the v printing position quickly, but without shock on the key lever. The carriage is guided on rods 20a nd'21. under suitable tension mechanism.- The shaft 22 carries the rocker arm23 which is under pressure of a spring 24 adjustable by a screw 25. The upper end of the arm '23 carries suitable pawls 26 for co-acting with a toothed wheel 27 which'is pivoted to the 30 frame of the machine. A pinion 28 rotatable with the wheel 27 engages the teeth of the rack 29 carried by'a lever 30 on the carriage. Horizontal arms 31 from the shaft 22 carry the universal bar 32 which extends across'the machine above the arms 33 of the intermediate levers. The ribbon vibrator 34 carried by a pivoted arm 35 is connected by a link 36 to one of the arms 31 which is connected to the universal bar. When any one of the key levers is operated its intermediate leverwill raise the universal bar 32 and operate the escapement mechanism and ribbon mechanism. When the key lever is released, the spring 3 lifts it to its normal position of rest and the spring 24 presses the arm 23 forward and thus rocks the shaft 22, depresses the arm 31 and the universal bar 32 which in turn returns the intermediate lever to its normal position of rest. It will thus be seen that the universal bar tends to return the intermediate levers to their normal position of rest.
. What I claim is 1. A typewriter action comprising a pivoted key lever, a pivoted intermediate lever, a spring connecting said levers, a pivoted type bar, a spring connecting said type bar and said intermediate lever, said intermediate lever and said type bar having lugs with inclined edges having a sliding engage ment at the beginning of the stroke.
2. A typewriter action comprising a pivoted key lever, a pivoted intermediate lever, a spring connecting said levers, a pivoted type bar, a spring connecting said type bar and said intermediate lever, said intermediate lever and said type bar having lugs with inclined edges having a sliding engagement at the beginning of the stroke, and a universal bar operated by the intermediate lever. A typewriter action comprising a pivoted key lever, a pivoted intermediate lever, a spring connecting said levers, a pivoted type bar, a spring connecting said type bar and said intermediate lever, said intermediate lever and said type bar having lugs with inclined edges having a sliding engagement at the beginning of the stroke, a universal bar operated by the intermediate lever and a spring for returning the universal bar to its normal position, said universal bar tending to return the intermediate levers to their normal positions.

A typewriter action comprising a pivoted type bar having two lugs projecting forwardly of the pivot when the type bar is in its normal position of rest, one of said lugs being above the pivot and the other below the pivot, a pivoted intermediate lever in rear'of said type bar connected to the upper lug-and having a sliding engagement with the lower lug and a key lever connected to said intermediate lever.
5. A typewriter action comprising a pivoted type bar, having two lugs pro ecting forwardly of the pivot when the type bar is in its normal position of rest, one of said lugs being above the pivot and the other below the pivot, a pivoted intermediate lever in rear of said type bar connected to the upper lug and having a sliding engagement with the lower lug and a key lever yieldingly connected to said intermediate lever.
6. A typmvriter action comprising a pivoted type bar having two lugs projecting forwardly of the pivot when the type bar is in its normal positior of rest, one of said lugs being above the 1. vot and the other below the pivot, a pivote .l intermediate lever in rear of said type bar connected to the upper lug and having a sliding engagement with the lower lug, a key lever connected to said intermediate lever, said intermediate lever having a lug projecting forwardly of its pivot and a universal bar extending above said lug for operation thereby.
