Description

Winsum: mentar: l @077% j@ j@ j P m/ f waited tates @sind @inline MILTON J. lFIREY1 OF MANSFIELD,OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 104,133, dated June 14,1870.
IMPROVED BRIDLE-BIT.
The Schedule referred te in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
Y lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the sanie, reference being had to tbe accompanying drawing forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in bridle-bits, whereby they are made more ef l'ective in securing horses to. posts, or other fixtures, than bridle-bits have heretofore been, and
It consists in attaching slides to the bit and links to the slides, arranged to operate as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanyingr drawingv Figure 1 represents a front view of the bit, with my slides attached, and arranged to operate according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a side view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Ais the mouth-piece of the bit, to the ends of which rings B B are jointed, so that they may readily turn laterally. Y
OO are the slides, consisting of slotted pieces of metal, one end of which pieces is jointed to the rim of the rings B B.
To the other ends the links D D are attached.
E represents the headstall, which is attached to the -top of the rings B I3.
F arc the reins. Gis the bitching-strap. In bitching a horse which has a habit of pulling and breakingaway, this strap, which is attached to the link D at the point H, is passed through the other link, as seen in tig. I.
Now, if the horse attempts to get away by pulling, his under jaw is so tightly griped by the slides, which play freely on the mouth-piece A, that he soon ceases his efforts, and stands quiet. v l The effect of pulling on the strap G is to draw thc rings B B inward, and bring the slides O G against the jaw, which has the desired effect upon the horse.
Pulling the reins F, when they are attached as represented, has a like effect; but it is not designed to attach the reins to the links, except to control a vicious or headstrong horse.
For a gentle horse the reins are buckled into the rings BB, which gives to the driver only the power afforded by the common bit.
By this arrangement it will be seen that the same power by which the horse is controlled in driving is exerted when he attempts to pull himself loose from a post, or other fixtures.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In combination vwith a bridle-bit, the slotted slides C O jointed to the rings B B, and operating substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In combination with the slides G G, the links D D, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
