county of Worcester, England, manufacturer, have invented a new anduseful Case for Spectacles and Eyeglasses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, arid exact description of the same.

My invention comprises improvements in cases for spectacles, eyeglasses; and refersto that class of such cases wherein the covers are retained either closed or open, by means of a spring or springs, adjacent to the hinge, a closing pull being exerted on one side of the dead center and an opening pull on the other side of the dead center; the object of my present invention being to provide a spring of improved form.

According to my present invention I make the bent link integral with the spiral spring whereby the spring may be more easily and efficiently attached to the case while a simpler and exceedingly eificient spring con-- trol is provided.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of an eyeglass case having lid controlling means according to my invention. Fig. 2, is an enlarged view of the spring and its connections. Fig. 3, is a section on the line AB in Fig. 2 showing the lid in its closed condition, while Fig. l, is

- a similar section with the lid fully opened.

In carrying my invention into practice as shown upon the accompanying drawings, to the case lid 1, I secure the looped end 2 of the spiral spring 3 by the lug 4e pressed up from the said lid, the other end of this .spring being connected to the case body 5 through the medium of a special bent link part. The spiral spring is coiled from wire in the usual way but one end is provided with an extension part 6 which is attache to the case body by a similar lug 7. I

The spiral spring'being connected between the points 4 and 7, always tends to pull the two parts together and obviously if these two parts are on one side of the dead center line passing through the hinge 8 then the spring would seek to close the lid, while when on the oppositeside of this dead center line it would seek to open the.

lid. The wire is coiled to provide a spring 3 at oneend, being then bent as at 6 to embrace the hinge and to transmit the pull of the spring about the hinge when the case lid is fully opened.

.The spring is preferably elongated in section in order to project as little as possible into the interior of the case, while if desired morethan one spring may be used. In practice it is most convenient. to attach the spring to the lid but if desired this spiral spring part may be attached to the case and the part 6 direct to the lid,-or the part 6 may be between two spiral spring parts one connected to the lid and the other to the case, but in all cases a part of the spring is secured to both the case body and the lid.

What I claim then is 1. In a case for spectacles or eyeglasses, the combination of a case body, a lid, a hinge securing said lid tothe said case body and extending continuously from end to end thereof, a spiral spring, means for directly securing one end of said spring to the lid and the other end thereof to the case body,

and a bent up part integral with the spring is operating along a line beyond the hinge;

all so arranged that when the spring is on one side of its dead center it will close the lid while when .on the other side of the dead center it will 'fully open same; substantially as set forth.

2. In a case for spectacles, or eyeglasses, the combination of a case body, a lid, a hinge securing said lid to said case body and extending continuously from end to end thereof, lugs pressed up from 'said lid and case body, a spiral spring, loops on the ends of saidspring .and engaging the said lugs and thereby directly securing the spring to the case body and lid, and a curved part bent up from the wire of the spring intermediate the oints of attachment arran ed to allow the id to open to such a position that the effective pull of the spring is operating along a line beyond the hinge; all so arname to this specification in the presence ranged that when the spring is on one side of two subscribing Witnesses. of its dead center it will close the lid while T 4 when on the other side of the dead center FRAL-CIS JAMES VVILLMOTT' wit will fully open same; substantially as set Witnesses:
