DOOR HANGER AND TRACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Iatented Oct. 15,1912.
Application led December 23, 1910. Serial No. 598,914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORGAN J. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door Hangers and Tracks, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door hangers and tracks particularly adapt-- ed for use in supporting sliding doors.
It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a door hanger and track which are strong, efficient, and comparatively light in Weight andwhich may be manufactured at a minimum expense.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door hanger and track in which the track portion is formed of sheet metal bent to a flanged tubular shape so that it will withstand the maximum amount of strain in any direction lto which 1t may be subjected.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door hanger and track in which the door supported by the hanger may swing longitudinally and laterally of the track to compensate for inequalities of manufacture in erecting the parts.
With the above, and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved door hanger and'its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, Yand all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views: Figure 1 is a side view of the improved hanger and a portion of the track with apart of a door shown suspended therefrom, parts of4 the hanger and the track being shown in section; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof with the track shown i'n section; Fig. 3 is a top view of the carriage, parts broken away and other parts being shown in section; Fig. 4l is a side view of a portion of amodified form of hanger; Fig. 5 is fragmentary detail view thereof; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail view of one of the parts shown1 in Fig. 5; and, Fig. 7 is a similar view of another part shown in said figure.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 indicates a portion of a door frame to Awhich is bolted the track bracket 11. This bracket is provided with a track engaging sleeve 12 projecting therefrom which is adapted to extend around the tubular track section 13 and securely fasten said track sections to the supporting door frame. The brackets are spacedV certain distances apart to provide the requisite support for the track sections and have bolt apertures formed therein to accommodate bolts orlagl screws used for fastening them to a building.
The track is formed of sheet metal bent into tubular form approximately rectangular in cross section and having an elongated slot 111 in the lower tread portion 15 thereof which extends the entire length of the track section. The lower edge portions of the track are bent downwardly at right angles to the lower portion to form vertical strengthening flanges 16 and are again bent at right angles toward each other to form horizontal strengthening flanges 17 which are spaced a distance apart to form the lower portion of the elongated slot 14. These horizontal flanges 17 serve to strengthen the vertical flanges against lateral movement. The lower portion of the sleeve of the bracket is provided with a slot 18 to accommodate the depending flanges of the track, and also in order not to obstruct the passageof a hanger member suspended from the inner portion of the track. The vertical strengthening flanges 16 of the track are spaced a greater distance apart than the horizontal flanges 17 in order to provide space in the slot 14 to accommodate the flanges 19 of hanger wheels 20. These wheels are journaled on the roller bearing pins 21 carried by the horizontally projecting arms 22 of the hanger frame 23. The wheels which are interposed between the straddling arms of the hanger frame vhave double flanges and tread portions andare equivalent to and may be termed double wheels which are integrally connected together by the medial hubs 24 for convenience of manufacture. The wheels are positioned to travel on the tread portions 15 of the track with the flanges thereof extending into the widened portion of the slot and serving as guides to position the wheels and frame centrally within the tubular tracks.
The hanger frame between the pairs of wheels depends downwardly and through the slot of the tubular track in the form of legs 25 having eyed ends 26, `the eyes of which are in alinement with each other. A pivot bolt 27 extending through the eyed ends of the depending frame legs is taperingly reduced in diameter toward each end from a medial enlargement 28, the reduction in diameter ending at the inner faces of the eyed legs in order to have the bearing portions 29 of the bolt of the same diameter as the medial portion 28. The bolt is held in position in the eyed member by means of the head on one end and a cotter pin 30 which extends through the bolt at the other end.
A looped hanger strap 31 extending'over the portion of the bolt between the depending frame legs and on both sides of a door 32 is fastened to said door by bolts or rivets 33. rlhe looped portion of the strap enthe medial enlargement of the pivot bolt and can rock longitudinally thereon as well as turn laterally thus providing a joint construction in which the hanger frames and wheels will be automatically adjusted to and ride over undulations or inequalities of the track.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 the pivot bolt 34 is adapted to be adjusted vertically with relation to the hanger frame in order to raise or lower the door suspended from the strap 3l. This adjustment is provided for by forming the pivot bolt with upstanding ears 35 having horizontal slots 36 extending therethrough. The lower ends 37 of the depending legs 25 have vertical slots 38 extending therethrough and screw bolts 39 extend through these slots and the slots 38 and are threaded tothe nuts 40 bearing against the inner faces ofthe upstanding ears 35. The upstanding ears are provided with shoulders 4l to hold the nuts in position and prevent their turning while the screws are being turned. rfhe engaging faces of the ears 35 and the lower ends 87 of the legs are serrated or provided with teeth l2 and i8 respectively to hold the parts in adjusted position. The horizontal slots provide for lateral adjustment of the pivot bolt, it being only necessary to loosen the screw bolts and slide the pivot bolt to the desired position and then retighten the screws. In adjusting the bolt vertically the bolt is separated sidewise from the legs and is raised or lowered and then slid back into position with the teeth engaging each other. lThe screw bolts are then inserted and tightened as before mentioned.
While the hanger frame and legs thereof are shown as formed integral the said frame and legs may be formed of two or more pieces bolted or riveted together.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the hanger and track are verysimple in construction and operationand are strong and durable.V
