To all 'whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, AXEL JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-End- Flanging Mechanism, of which the following is a specilication.
The invention relates to'an improved apparatus for Hanging .the ends of cylindrical can bodies to prepare the same to receive and have seamed thereto the can ends or y heads, the object oit the invention being to dispense with the use of the Hanging rolls and associated spinning mechanism `com monly employed for Hanging over the ends of the can bodies, and to provide an automatic end Hanging machine of a simple, effective and durable construction for use in can making factories for Hanging can bodies prior to receiving an end or head and in canning factories for Hanging the end of fill d cans to which heads are to be applied an` by means of which the ends of the can lbodies may be Hanged by a single operation ofta reciprocating Hanging plunger die movable toward and'from the open end of a retained or clamped can body, the said reciprocating Hanger die acting against the linner wall surface of the can end to be flanged and gradually turning over or Hanging outwardly the entire circumferential end ot' the body as a single operation.
The Hanging mechanism comprises a cofurnishedwith a plurality of Hanging dies, a longitudinally reciproca-ting Hangin die which registers successively with the anging. dies of the rotary carrier, a vertically re- 491ciprocating' Hanging plunger die, and means for imparting an intermittent movement to the rotary carrier and successively throwing into action the reciprocating Hanging die and the' vertically reciprocating Hanging x plunger die.
In the accompanying drawings to which reference is hereto made-Figure 1 islaf-side elevation of the improved can end Hanger, illustrating the various parts in normal position, and disclosing the drive mechanism for actuating the rotary, carrier and the connections for operating the reciprocating Hanging die and the Hang-ing plunger die. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the cam grooved disks for controlling the action of the reciprocating segmental Hanging die and the reciprocating Hanging plunger die.
In the drawings, the numeral l represents the frame of the machine, the same being of any suitable form capable of giving support tothe other parts. Through this frame extends the vertical shaft 2, carrying at its upper end au intermittently rotating carrier 3 provided with a plurality of upwardly extended segmental external can Hanging dies 4, each of which is adapted to partly embrace a can body 5.
The shaft 2 supporting the rotary carrier 3 is extended through a sleeve 6 situated Iwithin the frame of the machine and adjacent its lower end has secured thenecn a radially slotted wheel 7, which is intermittently driven by an engaging roll 8 carried by and depending from a gear 9. This gear is mounted on an upright shaft l0, drlven from the -main drive shaft 11 through the medium of the intermeshing bevel gears 12 and 12', the former of which is on the main drive shaft 11 and the latter on the upright shaft 10. Under this construction an intermittent or Geneva stop movement is thus imparted to the shaft 2 and carrier 3 from the main drive shaft 11.

Each of the segmental Hanging dies 4 of the rotary carrier 3 is provided or furnished with an'upwardly .extended segmental wall extension 14, which in conjunction with a similar wall extension 14 of the longitudiweones V'y reciproc'ating` segmental dangling die o ervsl when tbe iianging dies are in registry, as a guide extension of the Hanging dies for the vertieally reciprocating' plunger die lo, and into ivliieli guide exten sion tlie end of tbe can body to be flanged projects.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to protect by Letters Patent is "1. In a can' body end Hanging machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having a plurality of external segmental Hanging dies, of a reciprocatingexternal segmental Hangin die coperating with the Hanging dies o? the carrier, a vertically reciprocating internal Hanging plunger die, and means for imparting movement to the said Hanging dies.
2. In a can body end Hanging machine, the combination with a rotary carrier pro` vided with a plurality of external segmental Hangin dies, of a segmental wall co'acting with said dies for holding can bodies therein, a'reciprocating external segmental Hanging die for registering successively with the Hanging dies of the rotary carrier, and a reciprocating internal Hanging die for Hanging the end of can bodies held between the saldexternal Hanging dies when in registry.
3. In alcan body end Hanging machine, the combination with a rotary carrier provided with a plurality of external Hanging dies, of a reciprocating external segmental Hanging diecoacting with the dies of the rotary carrier, each'of said mentioned dies being provided with an external segmental wall extension, and a reciprocating internal Hanging die coperating with the" external Isegmental Hanging dies for the described purpose.

The combination with an intermittent rotar'y can supporting carrier provided with a plurality of external segmental Hanging dies, of a reciprocating external segmental Hanging die coacting successively with said dies, and an internal Hanging plunger die coperating with the segmental dies for Hanging the end of a can body held between said dies.
7. In a can body end Hanging machine, the combination with a rotary can support-y ing carrier, of a plurality of external segmental Hanging dies upwardly extended from said carrier and each provided with a4 segmental wall extension, coacting successively with said dies for clamping a can body therein, and a reciprocating can body Hanging die conforming in shape to the mouth of the can to be Hanged, 'and vmeans for moving the said die into and out of the guide formed by the wall extensions of the segmental dies when in registry for Hanging the end of the clamped can extended therein. i

In a can body end Hanging machine, thecombination with a rotary can supporting carrier, of a plurality of external segmental Hanging dies upwardly extended from said carrier and each provided with a segmental wall extension, a reciprocating slide, an external Hanging die provided with a segmental wall extension ca'r-4 ried thereby, means for actuating said slide to place its die in registry successively with the dies of the carrier, a reciprocating internal can body Hanging die, and mechanism for moving the same into and out of the Guide extension formed by thev segmental wall extensions of the external segmental dies while in registry.
