HAT-PIN PROTECTOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Pn'rnn I l. ALPP, a subjectof the lzar of Russia, and a resident of New York, in the borough oil Manhattan, county and. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in llat-Pin Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved protector for ladies hatpins whereby the annoyance and danger to accidents which is jjiroduced by the projecting points ot the hat-pins is obviated, and at the same time a guard for the hat-pin obtained by which the slipping out of the latter and the detaching of the hat from the head-dress is prevented, and for this purpose the invention consists of a hat-pin protector, which comprises an exterior shell having a conical inwardly-tapering diaphragm at its ingoing end provided with a central opening for the pin-point and a notched lower edge adjacent to said opening, a spring-act]iated locking lever tulcrnmed to the rear part. oi the shell, a spring-actuated jaw-lever iulcrun'iednear the central opening of the diaphragm and adapted to be engaged by the locking-lever, and means for producing the engagement of the locking-lever with the jaw-lever for setting the jaw-lever and its jaw into proper position for receiving the point of the hatpin, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.

When the jawlever and lmaking-lever are placed in locked position, as shown in Fig. 3, the protector is ready to be placed in position over the point of the hat-pin. For this poi-pose, it is passed over the pin-point after the hat-pin is passed, through the hat and hair-dress oi the wearer, the point Oil the pin entering through the perforation 0. The pin does not strike the spring (Z because that spring is located at one side of the path of the pin, the lever (Z being at its rear-portion sutliciently wide to' receive the spring (Z at a point out of the path of the pin. The pinpoint passes inward until it strikes the shank of the locking-lever c and pushes the same back so as to release its upper end from the end of the jaw-lever and permit the latter to move under the tension of its spring (1 in upward direction so that the biting edge of the jaw (Z presses on the pin-point and forces the same against the biting edges 6 of the diaphragm b and hold thereby the protector firmly on the point of the hat-pin, as shown in Fig. 4. For removing the protector from the pinpoint, it is necessary to return the jaw-lever and locking-lever into their interlocked po sition. This is accomplished either by an elbow-lever which is tulcrumed to the upper part of the shell 7J1 in such a manner that one arm of the lever f extends through a slot f in the shell in downward direction toward the jawlever while the upper outer arm of the elbow-lever is extended over a depression f in the shell so that by pressing the outer arm of the elbow-lever 7 downward, the inner lower arm is lowered and pressed on the jaw-lever which is thereby lowered against the tension of its spring so that the spring-actuated locking-lever reengages the rear-end of the jaw-lever, produces the release of the jaw and notched edges from the pin-point and permits the removal of the pin-point from the protector while placing the parts of the protector in proper position for replacing it on the pin-point whenever required.

In place of the tulcrumed elbow-lever f, a pusher 2) may be arranged, the shank of which passes through a perforation in the end of the shell 72 and which is provided with a small knob or enlargement p at its inner end so that when the pusher is pressed inwardly, the small knob presses on the upper end of the locking-lever and locks its inclined and shouldered face over the rear-end of the jaw-lever so as to hold the same in position when it is desired to remove the protector from the pin-point. Otherwise the action of the pusher is equivalent to the action of the elbow-lever, both forming the means, for applying the locking-lever to the jaw-lever so as to retain the same in unlocked position and clear of the ingoing central opening 0 of the diaphragm. The point of the hat-pin, on being lnserted into the shell, passes either along or sidewise of the rear-part of the jaw-lever and strikes the upper end of the locking-lever, releasing thereby the locking-lever from the j aw-lever. As the edge of the aw is pressed by the spring acting on the jaw-lever, against the pinpoint inserted into the shell and the action Copies of this patent may be obtained for of the biting edges of the lower notched portion of the diaphragm, the protector is firmly retained on the pin-point and thereby an effective and reliable guard-covering for the point of the hat-pin obtained, which can be readily handled when applying or removing it from the point of the hat-pins, and which can at the same time be manufactured and placed on the market at a comparatively small expense.

I claim:

1. A protector for the points of ladies hat-pins, comprising an exterior shell, a conical inwardly tapering diaphragm at the entrance end of said shell, said diaphragm being provided with a center-opening and a notched edge adjacent thereto, a spring-actuated j aw-lever fulcrumed adjacent to the center-opening of the diaphragm and provided with a biting jaw, a spring-actuated locking-lever whose upper end is placed in alinement with said center-opening for engaging the opposite end of the jaw-lever, said locking-lever being fulcrumed near the rear-end of the shell and adapted for engaging the jawlever and holding the jaw in unlocked position.

2. A protector for the points of ladies hat-pins, comprising an exterior shell, a conical. inwardly-tapering diaphragm at the entrance end of said shell, said diaphragm being provided with a center-opening and a notched biting edge adjacent thereto, a springactuated jaw-lever fulcrumed adjacent to the center-opening of the diaphragm and provided with a biting jaw adjacent to the notched edge of the opening, a springactuated locking-lever whose upper end is placed in alinement with said center-opening and whose lower end is fulcrumed to the rear-end of the shell adapted for engaging the opposite end of the jawlever, and means for producing the interlocking of the j aw-lever and locking-lever.
