Description
JOSEPH F. SCHOOLFIELI), 0F GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA.
FOUNTAIN BLACKING-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
Application filed. April 23, 1912. Serial No. 692,568.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. SCHOOL- rnznn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain BlackingBrushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fountain black ing brushes and has for an object to provide a device of this kind wherein liquid blacking can be readily conducted to the spreading surface of the brush without resulting in leakage of the liquid from its container.
In the drawing forming a portion of this application and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views -Figure 1 is a side view of the brush showing parts in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof.
The brush comprises a suitable head 1 having a handle 2 and polishing bristles 3. Mounted upon the back of the head 1 is a container at for a liquid blacking. This container is provided with a head 5 from which the spreading bristles 6 extend. The head 5 is provided with a central bore 7 which opens at one end into the bristles 6 while the opposite end of the bore is disposed in line with a central passage 8 in an elastic valve seat 9. A valve rod 10 is slidable through the central passage 8 and through the bore 7 and at one end the rod is provided with a valve 11 which has a substantially conical portion 12 which may be slightly extended into the passage 8 and to frictionally engage against the walls thereof to effect a liquid tight connection between the bristles 6 and the container 4. The inner end of the valve 11 is provided with a stem 13 which is disposed in line with a bracket 14 in the container 4, a spring 15 being interposed between the stem 13 and the bracket 14; and exerting its tension against the valve so as to securely hold the same engaged against the seat 9.
A bracket 16 upon the head 5 is pivotally connected as at 17 with a rocking lever 18. This lever has its arm 19 provided with an elongated slot 20 for the reception of the pivot pin 21 at the outer end of the valve rod 10. The opposite arm 22 of the lever extends laterally and it terminates slightly beyond one side of the container 4 where it is pivotally connected as at 23 with a lever 24. The lever 2-1 is mounted for rocking movements on one side of the container 4 and at 25 the lever is extended behind one end of the container and terminally formed to provide a manipulating portion 26. The portion 26 is disposed in spaced relation to an adjacent portion of the handle 2 whereby it may be readily engaged by one finger of the hand of the operator to effect an adjustment of the valve 11 as the occasion may demand. The container 41: carries a suitable removable cap 27 whereby the container may be supplied with liquid polish.
From the construction described it is now evident that one may conveniently control the portion 26 of the lever 24. with a result ant adjustment of the lever 18 and an opening of the valve 10. The passages 7 and 8 each have a diameter exceeding that of the valve 10 whereby when the valve is opened the liquid from the container 4 is free to flow to the spreading bristles 6. In this manner the spreading bristles can be saturated with a liquid blacking and the latter effectually applied to the shoe.
I claim A brush comprising a member having a handle thereon, a liquid container carried by the member, a head carried by the container and provided with a yieldable valve seat having a central passage, the said head having a bore alining with the passage of the valve seat, bristles extending from the head, the said bore being in open communication with the bristles, a valve rod slidable in the bore and in the passage in the valve seat, a valve disposed at one side of the seat, and having a conical portion, a spring bearing against the valve so as to hold the conical portion thereof yieldingly against the walls of the passage in said seat, a rocking lever mounted upon the head and having an arm extending through the bristles and pivotally connected with the valve rod and having a second arm extending laterally beyond one side of the container, and In testimony whereof I affix my signature a second lever pivoted to the side of the in presence of two Witnesses. container and having a portion pivotally JOSEPI I F SCHOOLFIELD connected With the second arm of the first lever and having a manipulating portion Vitnesses:
disposed at one end of the container and in" "T. M. SMITH, spaced relation with said handle. SIDNEY J. STERN.
